Gday kids. as the long winded title suggests, i'm doing an empire lid paint up, using one of jinto's very excellent lids. Other than some experimenting with a hasbro lid, this is my first real paint up - its unlikely to be up there with the best guys, but hope its reasonable enough for you crew to be fairly kind. im doing a layering method, with some topical fine details, and am using spray paints/rattlecans.
This is very eary stages, with an ear and rear panels done. will update when possible, but will be a fairly long process, so it may take a while. Feedback apreciated, and if any questions, feel free to ask. a big shout out to Jinto, who has helped with heaps of my pedantic questions. Apologies for the size of the images in advance - its my mini laptop having issues, hopefully they will zoom back down for you once loaded. thanks for looking peeps!

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Looking good so far. I really like the layering you've done... Indeed jinto's lid is an excellent one. Keep up the good work!
Respect!

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Jayvee
This is coming along really nicely ,
Youve got those colours all looking great
Ill be watching the progress very intently
Whats the name of the main colour on the back ? it looks great!
Looks like all your colour research is paying off for you
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
thanks guys, appreciate the kind words :-)
jinto - thanks man, the colour research was pretty intensive, but with lots of trials and help from your good self, they seem to look on track. the main green on the back panels which i was really happy with, is from the ironlak range, and the colour is 'neverland'. its a little deeper and greener in person, and is probably even more accurate, and looks very close to the aosw pics, particularly after a steel wool and dullcote. i didnt mix it or mist it with anything else either - just its colour, so it seems a good option. thanks again crew!

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Okay gang, finished my back panels - mite not look a huge differrence in the photos, but topically touched a few areas up, and added a few more scratches etc... again, apologies for the size of the images, only have my travel laptop at the moment, and it has limited functions. as a side note, I thought i'd also add in some pics of my MOW gauntlets which are about 90% done. bit more grime and darts to add. I know its generally a helmet thread, but thought as its a long process, i'd throw these in for something extra to look at and get an opinion on. thanks a bunch!

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Gday crew. Just a small update, have done the rangefinder ear now as well, heres some quick pics. I also experimented with a bit of weathering on the ear which i was happy with. will do most of the overall weathering at the end, but just thought it was a good idea to practice on one of the smaller sections.
So far, I have generally used paints from the Ironlak range of paints, which are graffiti art acrylic laquers. they are cheap, come in a great range of colours and work well with other acrylics, masking fluid and dullcote. If anyone is interested in any of the colours used, they are as follows -
back panels :
Grey primer
Ironlak Washington (light grey)
Ironlak chrome - a good silver after weathering and dulling
Ironlak Lazy Grey (dark grey)
Anchor brand colourbond dune/birch (light beige)
Ironlak Neverland (green/blue colour)
Rangefinder ear :
Grey primer
Ironlak Chrome
Ironlak Lazy Grey
Ironlak Cuppa (main beigy colour)
Opposite ear :
Grey Primer
Ironlak Washington grey
Ironlak Soviet Red
Ironlak Huey (green) misted very lightly with a Tamiya olive green I already had.
thanks for looking peeps, peace :)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Hey there Fett-mutants! just another update for you guys and a bit of documenting for my own use. Hope everyone is well, I have added photos of the dome and cheeeks areas of my work in progress empire lid. Was really happy with this section, and can see light atthe end of the tunnel!
Paints used on this section were as follows - Ironlak Chrome, Ironlak Lazy Grey (dark grey), and Anchor brand Rivergum/willow (the main green, and am really happy with the colour for something to come straight out of a rattle can). used decals for the stripes, however, coloured them up with sponges and acrylics - rapt with the results, as the fading is how i want it, they are clean as a whistle, and was far less of a headache to do. didalot of experimenting, trust me :) added scatches and weathering with acrylics applied with toothpicks, watercolours and tamiya weathering around dent etc (kinda like a little makeup set. till the next section, enjoy, let me know what you think! peace :)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Wow! Amazing paint job you did there! I see a new future paint master in town!
Only one thing to comment: the decal on the right ear it supposed to be lower and paralel to the base of the white decal.
Great job, Jayvee!
Respect!
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
thanks raf, appreciate the kind words - yea, some of the decals will be changed down the track, as the set i got is marginally large for some of the areas. i may even topically paint them on down the track, as im finding new and better ways and techniques the more im painting. there is a little section im not happy with on a back panel that ill fix this way too. thanks for looking, and for your input bud, peace :-)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
My goodness ,mate what an amazing job you are doing there really is great ,
You are really making it work all those colours are great , and the weathering is really top notch ,
Nice finish on the paint work , I can see you are taking your time and doing it right , ;) it really makes all the difrents between a good paint job and a great one.
Im stoked to see it coming together so nicely,
Keep up the great work
What purple are you planing on useing under the red and which red did you decide on becouse Im thinking you should do the reds with both of the red irolaks dust one coat let it dry use the other then change again , Just my thoughts Im sure you all ready have it sorted though .
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
When the red is applied is when all the colour shines in the Boba helmet, now it looks dull, without the red, but when it's applied... It looks Boba, no kidding! Nice work ont he paintjob :thumbsup
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Wow, you guys with way more experience are far too kind. I really am humbled by your responses.
Raf, just as a side note, the litle decal you mentioned was originally in the right spot - and had moved (mustve been while masking off the ear). all fixed now bud into its original position :). One other thing - if anyone is looking for a great lid to paint up, definately think about Jinto - he makes an awesome lid, and i'm just hoping I can do it justice on completion!
Peace :)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Nice job! I'm diggin' all the little nicks and scratches on the dome... and your weathering job on the MOW guantlets is great too!

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Thanks F4R - i must say, I kinda like the fact that being in another country, I have to find colours that are specific to the australian market, and work with what I can. While alot of trial and error, and talking to guys in oz like jinto, I actually really like the challenge of having something which is a little specific to whats avail in my area. Also, in real life, the colours are what Id call pretty accurate - Im only taking these shots with my phone, so you dont always get the best reflection. Ive put a bunch of time into colours, and the way I look at it, Its more important to have colours which blend well together. Also, I have tried to match them the best to what I think looks the best also. for example, the AOSW helmet is what most will base colours off, but you can look at a bunch of shots, original and SE versions of the movie etc, and with differrent lighting etc. it will look differrent every time. two things I specifically like and wanted to emulate, not for the most movie accurate, but simply as I like them the best, was the empire original release has dimmer/grany lighting, and has the main green looking slightly lighter. I really like that look and went for that. I also prefer the bluer green tinge on the back panels than just darker green - so I wanted that too. In my mind, Ive emulated those two colours like I wanted, so im rapt.
In any case, that longer than normal rant was to show there was some method to my madness - I did alot of colour research and chose colours specifically for movie accuracy, but also my own taste.
Thanks again for looking bud, really appreciate the feedback. Peace :)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
okeey-dokey fett lovers! just my next little update for this empire paintup on Jinto's ridiculously rad lid.. here iv'e done the mandibles and upper cheeks and a little more weathering including white paint splotches etc. still have rangefinder, visor, borden, touchups and interior to add, but about 85% done at the moment. Im really happy with the results for my first paint attempt so far, so hope you'll be kind...
One thing I will note, is that the red looks spot on to me in person, but as we all know red isnt the favorite colour for cameras, it may appear a little washed out in the photos. dont stress, I can assure you in person its how I wanted it. on the red though, I did opt for a little redder than some, as I really liked the colour of terminal fettlers 'one last wafer thin...' version - this to me is what I tried to emulate, as I personally feel some go a little too burgundy, and from the aosw pics, I feel its a little more red. the Aosw lid was what I decided to go for with the extra weathering and scratches, rather than just straight up ESB, as even though im doing an empire suit, if I decide to do a Special Edition down the track, it just gives me both options. Lastly, the helmet in person actually has more of the flare that is evident in the real bucket - my camera just seems to narrow that out a fraction more than in person.
just for my own documenting and for anyone else interested, the colours used for the mandibles were : Ironlak Chrome, Ironlak Melbourne grey (medium grey), Ironlak Venom (a great shade of purple), and an auto paint Red from power paints caled Rio/Rogue red. this was weathered with tamiya weathering kits and also had some white/super light grey accents added. Upper cheeks were Ironlak Chrome, Ironlak Lazy Grey (dark grey) and Ironlak rourke Black. silver scratches, weathering and cheap white acrylic was added for scuffing and splotches etc. enjoy guys, not finished, but hope its coming out ok..

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
A minor update incase anyone is interested, and also for my own documenting as always. I posted these same pics on jinto's helmet showoff thread - Thought I may as well update my own thread with them too. Just has a few more details added in from the last progress pics. Borden attached, the proper visor is in there, the orangy rust/substance stains on the back have been added, and some more overall weathering. Had an issue with my rangefinder stalk, so just waiting for a new one, then that will be added, and some interior and decal work to finish up, so about 90% done. let me know how im'm getting on :) Thanks for looking peeps, will have full resolution shots of the completed helmet soon. Peace :)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Hay mate it really looks great, the second pic is the money shot .
It came out very well, the colours all look very good, and the visor really brings the hole look together ,
any Aussie Fetts should take a note on the paint brands and colours Jayvee used, from spray cans they are as good as you can get
Ive had a stalk mold issue , but Ive come up with a way round it, and finally have the time to make it this weekend,
so Ill get it out to you asap
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
thanks for the great feedback J - yea, that second pic is my fave too, that view always is for any ESB lid i see, as you get a bit of everything with it - weathering, dent, kill stripes etc. The only two things that dissappoint me about the photos, is the red is not quite right compared to my real lid - in person, I really think I nailed the colour how I wanted it - dull red, but not as burgundy as some. Its just how I wanted it, but in the pics, the red almost looks differrent in every shot - a little bright in some, and a tad washed out in others - none of the pics quite emulate the actual lid, tho I understand red is a problem colour for standard cameras. The only other thing, is that I love looking at the helmet in person front on - It really has that flare on the cheeks, yet the minute I photograph it, my camera seems to narrow up the overall look of the lid . But not to worry, i'd rather have it look better in person than vice versa. One of my good mates is a professional photographer, so once completed, I'll do a full update on the thread, and get him to take some nice shots to help it along.
As for the stalk, much appreciated my friend, although I know it's Easter weekend, so just do it whenever suits you.
If any aussie Fett-heads (or anyone else for that matter) need any colour lists, tips etc, I did much research for this lid, and learnt lots of usefull things along the way - feel free to ask me anything you may think I can help with - while i'm not up to par with some of the talented folk on this board, i'd be more than happy to share any info I can. If you like any aspects of this lid, i'm always available if you want to drop me a line. Peace :)
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Do we have to be aussie? :)
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Haha, of course not- I only mentioned aussies as I know the paint brands and materials available here, but ill gladly help out anyone who asks my friend :-)
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
I think the flair looks perfect on the front pic , it can change at difrent angles,,
And its good for Aussies because the paints he used are Aus paints ,
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
You're probably right about the front pic view jint, its likely me just being a pedantic old fart:-)

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Looks too good. Thanks for pointing me in this direction!! In terms of this picture:
http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/attac...338d1303274093
This has shown me that I will have to buy 2 shades of grey. One for under the red and one for under the green. You're spending my money mate! hahaha
Also, in that picture ^ is a good example of the weathering you have done on the ear. What wash is that? Cheers.
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
definately 2 shades of grey - the grey under the red on the mandibles is definately lighter. I went for lazy grey (darker) on the dome and cheeks, and melbourne grey under the red. if you think the grey on the dome is too dark, go for melbourne grey on the dome and cheeks, and battleship grey (the next ironlak grey a shade ligther than melbourne) under the red. On a side note, the grey on the back panels i used was lazy grey - this should actually be lighter, and match the shade of grey you use under the red on the mandibles.
It does indeed get costly - its why for my next paint up, I have purchased an airbrush and am using humbrol enamels. I will say, you can actually buy a single action, cheap aibrush with a can of propellant and humbrols, and it will likely actually be cheaper than the spray paints. However, if you're not that confident etc, then this list should help you on your way.
The wash I used, wasnt actually a wash, but tamiya weathering kits. they come in a pack with 3 colours, and is like a little make-up kit. you get a little applicator brush, and brush it on - if it doesnt look right, you can wipe it right off and start again. dry pastels from an art shop will also give you a similar effect. Two other really important things you will need, is a masking fluid - I personally swear by humbrol maskol, as well as testors dullcote - this will clear coat your paint, and if lightly sprayed in between certain coats, helps make sur you wont get any paint lifting. It will dull metallics such as silver, but i personally feel that adds to the look of the damage..
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Cool, I am still just trying to sort out my green for the back panels now as I was unable to get hold of a neverland spray. :( I have just bought some Dullcote. between which layers on where should I apply this? Or would a once over at the end do the trick? :)
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Definately a once over at the end, but I also gave a very light spray after certain colours or weathering. You wont neef it over every layer, but I found it good over things like the silver, as sometimes metallics have a tendency to lift more than the norm, or even on ateas luke the killstripes or weathering of the powder burn on the dent - it just fixes it in place, without accidentlly smudging or rubbung out. Always keep your dullcote a reasonabe distace away, and light coats - it will drip if too close or applied too heavy..
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Apologies for some of the spelling there mate - bloody touch phones.. :-/
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Cool, cheers mate, I'm using a cold cast helmet so I won't be spraying any silver. :P
-
Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Real nice paint job mate...will be starting on mine very soon. Found where to get the Ironlak paints here in Brissy.
I have the MoW gaunts and jetpack too. What colour did you use for them and your armour?

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
That's some amazing work with spray paint. I tried spray paint and was not happy with the results. I am definately going airbrush this time. (which I should've done in the first place). But still, that is absolutely outstanding work!

Wow, thank you so much! I am in the prep process of a new ESB paintup (with another brilliant lid from James), and have indeed gone the airbrush route myself. I really do think regardless of airbrush or spray paint, the prep work in stencilling and masking seems to me as the most important. It may take hours to mask out a single panel, but at the end of the day, that is often the differrence between a good paint job and a great one. Thaks again bud, peace

Re: jayvee's empire wip jinto lid paint up..
Jayvee love your work mate. Unfortunately I can't get hold of Neverland because the shop wont order it because it comes in boxes of twelve :( They have 'Hunter' which is the next shade lighter... was contemplating using that. What do you reckon...?
