Some sort of kill marks or capture.....Like a pilot or footbal player wears for kills in combat or for the football player "big" hits in a game interceptions, touchdowns. You get the picture.

Ocre stripes, no confirmed or definitive meaning, but I like the kill mark idea. There are 14 yellow ones on the ESB helmet and 18 reddish-orange ones on the RotJ helmet.

Cool idea but I would like to think those numbers would be much higher than that for kills and or captures!

Exactly what I was thinking, no way Fetts got only 14-18 kills thats a small number. Maybe for every MAJOR kill/capture he has made. That would make a little more sense.

Sure. That would make more sense. I'll paraphrase John Wesley Hardin, a gunslinger from the old west; "I've killed over forty men, not counting Wookies or Tuskens." Just like the "good hits" of a football player, I think only the worthiest victories would be displayed on the helmet to avoid covering it with every little accomplishment.

Right, that makes sense. And, it also makes sense that ROTJ would have more of these kills than mere ESB. Another reason ROTJ owns.

hmmm of course if that was the case how could Fett get 4 extra BIG ones in between ESB and ROTJ if it took him an entire life to get 14 then I am going to bet it won't be easy for him to get 4 in that short time.

I'm not sure of the size, but the colors go from yellow in the front and mist to orange in the back.

Right you are, Lynn. The RotJ helmet however has orange stripes. Here is a link to a close-up of them (sorry, too big to post here). http://www.essat.cl/cdref/0301_0400/Boba_Fett_356.jpg

Maybe the stripes are the number of Jedi Kills he has taken in his life. We all know Boba has a major hatered for the group of people who killed his father... Just my Thought... Besides it took Boba almost 6 months to get from Cloud City to Jabba because of the other hunters after him and the Rebles after solo... He could have bagged a few more jedi in that time... Even Failed Padawans would be target...

Just my two cents on the stripes

Are you guys forgetting the little bit about Luke being the last, and "there is another" I don't think there were 4 Jedi he could have killed in that time still I like that idea best of all.

And I don't mean to be trying to find faults with all your ideas

You have to keep in mind that Vader was not perfect in elinating all the jedi... Most just stoped using the force and went into hidding or where failures... Plus Boba has a few years to hone his jedi hunting skill from ATOC to ROTJ ...

Besides for not being a Former jedi himself 8-14 jedi kill would be impressive...

Another spin on this theory, is that it could be the number of other bounty hunter's he has killed ..perhaps the extra four were all after the reward on Han Solo and he had to despatch them ?

I like that one (Hi, TDH noob here ). It explains why they change colors. Maybe the yellows were groups of 10's....oranges groups of 5's....The browns could be 20's? 15's?

Exactly like hash marks- only color coded. We use blue and red Imperial rank bars in the Carolina 501st.

I was finally able to view the pic Boba Fettish posted, and I think I have an answer. Albeit, not the one I want.

I never noticed this before, so if you'll forgive the ignorance of possibly repeating old news:

The #6 and 7, as well as #12 and 13 stripes are angled closer to each other. That means they had a STRAIGHT (or just not angled ENOUGH) spray template with 6 stripes cut out, and they just repeated it 3 times. Hence, 18 stripes. Every time they moved it....across the domed surface, they had to tilt it up, causing #7 to lean closer to #6, and so on.

First time I ever looked that closely!

What do you guys do with the yellow stripes on boba fett helmet? Do you leave them the way they are? like put tape over them and then paint? or do you completely paint over them and paint new yellow stripes?

I used stitching tape from a fabric store to make the stencil for my new stripes. The tape is just like regular masking tape, but only 1/4" wide. I think quilters use it.

If you're starting with a Don Post vinyl helmet, it's best to sand the helmet, apply a grey primer, and start your paint job from scratch, adding the stripes near the end of the process.

Someone out there will correct me if I'm mistaken, but the ESB helmet has 14 yellow stripes, and the ROTJ helmet has 18 reddish-orange, I believe.

When I did my first helmet, I used a Wal-Mart paint color, 'Catepillar Yellow'. However, the name (probably due to copyright problems) has been changed to 'Equipment Yellow.'

There are several other colors available on the market that will work just as well.

Also, there are stickers available that do all the work for you! Just peel and stick them to the helmet.

    Hope that helps a little...

I've actually masked off the existing stripes on the DP helmet before and cut the tape with an x-acto where I wanted the silver damage to be. Then I painted the layers as usual, primer, silver etc... When the tape was removed I had nicely weathered and dinged up stripes.

Ok I saw it last night. There was a link to a template for the helmet stripes. I've been looking for it now for about an hour. Can I have a hint? Links to other patterns for Fett are also appreciated. PM me if you like. -MM

Are you talking about the kill marks on Boba's helmet? Not sure where you might have seen the templates for those.

However, here's some templates of some of the armor.

    Re: Helmet Stripes

I think I could help with this (or probably someone after reading this would step ahead and help), but I think I could create for the first time, the killmarks on Boba's helmet. I could do them in the ESB pattern anyways (even though I'm a ROTJ favorite), but that's the closest I could get. I have something that will help me make a stencil to apply to any Boba's helmet. I have to make a little research thru the ref CD and then some experiments around here. I' be posting my progress soon.

    Re: Helmet Stripes

I don't know if this will help, but I made a template for the 14 ESB kill marks for my helmet. I did some research on the reference cd and I believe the stripe proportions and weathering marks are correct.

I printed them out, cut out the black parts with an exacto knife, cut on dotted lines and taped to the helmet. I believe the bottom of the stripes should be 1/4" above the red brow.

(The second row of stripes are for optional use.)

Here's the template and a photo. I'll post the result tomorrow. Hope this helps someone!

My idea of the stripes are a military ranking. Which might imply the difference in colors. To, me it looks light three different shades of yellow/orange. Starts yellow, then a more yellow/orange and then a darker orange. Colors are given by RS in the ESB Colors page.

    Re: Helmet Stripes

Here's a photo of how the kill marks template worked out on the Mystery Helmet. I was happy with it. I had to touch it up a little because of a tiny bit of "underspray" leaking through the template because I didn't have it taped down tight enough, but now it looks pretty good. I think the proportions turned out well too. What do you think?:

Wow, they really turned out great. They look much more accurate. Although, I seem to remember a discussion earlier about the stripes on the ESB helmet fading from yellow (front) to orange (back). I can't remember...

EDIT: Yeah, I can see it in this shot. The thickness of the stripes is spot on.

EDIT: By the way, are you still working on a template for the ROTJ helmet stripes? Thanks.

Sorry it took so long to get these done, but here you go. I've combined the ESB and the ROTJ templates on one image. The "unweathered" marks are to use in case you want to paint the weathering on top of the marks, rather do the extra work of cutting out the weathering. This should print actual size.
