    Helmet sculpt

Ive been away in the country for the past 4 months, away from internet axces , so to pass the spare time I had I figured Id have another crack at making my previous helmet sculpt even more accurate than before, Ive basicly remade the whole helmet , every single inch main emphasis on the visor trim shape , as the original has quite an uneven shape,,
I spent litterally days going through pics Id saved to a USB key, pics of the original helmets an the few first gen casts out there, spacificlly the Malone Fett buck, the original GMH , as it was very well photographed by Art, and moost importantly the Banazi helmet,dscf3548.jpgdscf3550.jpgdscf3556.jpg
As you can see Iveused alot of epoxy filler to reshape the face area , dscf3569.jpg
    An
y way a few more tweeks anits going in the sillicon tomorrow
I was throughing up weather to make the helmet with out the dent, and sculpt a dent then make casts of it and add the dent to the helmet , like the original has them added after the fact, this to add to the accuracy , and also so I can keep working on thedent an very them slightly depending on which helmet style Im doing

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

There does seem to be a slight angular change between the upper and lower platforms... ? (excuse the crude overlay)
Same angular change can be found on the MR and the GMH I have.

    Thanks for the comments guys,
Kaane, Ive struglled with this part quite a bit,
    dscf3575.jpg
It may need a bit of a change, though the platforms are actually slightly diffrent angles but once the ears go on it looks right, ( I think)

Not about intrest at all, Im making the molds as we speak, , so I can definantly do one,
Price,, well I dont know I guess gel coated FG with resin ears would be around the 200 mark but i could consider doing a resin one for cheaper

    Not long now,

I may as well put this in as Ive told a few people already and no other ears made of being made has, or is going to have this , sohelmet will have the only totally accurate left ear,
Also looking to have the ears machined as well so that will be cool

To all other makers Im sorry about the ear thing , it was wrong of me to tell any one I should have kept it to my self and a few select individuals) this is an open invitaion to feel free to add it to your pieces, in the future
As it is my ears will be the original to have this feture in them ,dscf3783.jpg but if any other makers would like to add it to the next sculpt/retooling go for it
after all we didnt design the original,, were all just copying an idea that we dont have rights to

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

For those that saw a problem with it, I used the GMH next to mine coz its the closest way of compairing my helmet to a real helmet,
I guess I shouldnt have done that as it was seen by some narrow minded types as a jibe at the maker of that helmet, if an thing it was a compliment, to them
though I will say I made the helmet long before I got the GMH and at the ime of my working on it I had not other helmet in my possession as I was deep in the country, in another part of Australia which I didnt take any helmets to compair my sculpt with , though I will say openly I did look at the Banazi helmet for reference, (Do a lay over youl see)

If you minions see isue with things I do feel free to voice them to me before you try curry favour with your betters

Its a small detail, most wouldnt be concerned with ,, (Ive been told aparently only 3 people will care) but if you are in to accuarcy its another fun fact, (myself and 2 others cant be wrong)
Look in to the center slot, see the screw ends, the real helmets has this detail , and there for it shows were the screws should be placed and if your into replica's little things like correct hard wear and nut placement are all part of it, also if your going to have pilotholes in your sculpt then you can have then in the right spot, just a small detail I know but in the on going persuit for accuracy it all adds up

I think he's referring to the bolts/screws(?) in the left ear's ditch:

Thanks for clearing that up guys!

That is a nice little detail! (make it 4 guys who appreciate the detail. lol!... even though I'm not out to make an exact replica)

I used to have a FP MR Premium helmet (since sold to partsguy17) that I mounted the ears on using screws. I didn't quite place them in the exact spots you did, but close!

James, in a forum of this type where people have nailed down dental files, borden connectors, rangefinder parts, interior parts etc etc, I would find it hard to believe only a few people would appreciate even small, new found discoveries. I think its awesome, and I applaud you for nailing down another new detail! Peace

I always thought they were marks from the milling tool, before the channel was machined, seems a lot of work to file the threads down to the exact correct length, but then again the ears were attached before painting...

By the way BGH, didn't mean to poo poo your find...

Thanks Jayve, (and all the otrhers who have sent pms support)
TF I could see that, the give away is there brass,, so unless the ears have a brass core I am pretty certin Im right, also ifyou study each helmet they dont all sit at the exact same hight, ESB is flush RTOJ isnt PP1 isnt PP2 is , pp3 sits like half a mil under,

CC, thats the beuty of it is it can be added so easily, though your right the total replica thing isnt every ones game,

Mabey Ive spent way to much time looking at pics and studding of the real helmet

Apparently there was something said about this in a negative way? Never be afraid to discuss something and never be afraid to post comparisons. If people have any problem with the GMH being compared to anything they can suck it. Some people I have seen in the past take offense at the stupidest things.

I know we talked about that detail in the ROTJ ears before but this is the first I have heard about it being visible on the other helmets. Can you show me the pictures where you see it?

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

At this very point I dont have time to grab them but I can asure you they are there,

Yeah i didnt intend to upset any one, I figured to compair my fan sculpt to the bench mark of Fett helmets wouldnt persieved as it was, How ever i guess I can see why some one could take it the wrong way, as for compairing it to an unultered MR paint master cast there is no harm in that No one can claim they own that, no one here any way,

And your right its actually sad that it comes to this , I do it coz I love making these, Ive poured way more money in to my helmets than ill ever get back , I dont do this as a way of making money, (I have a real job as a propmaker that is my income) , each time I finish a sculpt I start to notice other things I can change to get them more accurate, like the screws in the ears, these things come from studying the real screen used helmets, and first gen casts like the Bannazi helmet( you can see were the pilot holes are on it and a few other details ) and the KT plug, and as it is there is a couple of other tinny details Ive put in to my sculpt that are not on any other fan cast yet,

I make them for the love of it its not that hard to understand,

Honestly mate, if people are going to get upset by something like that and not actually take it as a compliment, it says alot more about them than you. Keep doing what you love, and the people you have sorted out before will always support you..

If you are comfortable with it, go ahead and post those comps back up, I want to see them. Dont listen to that rabble.

I have to disagree about those screws poking through in the ear slot. You would only be able to see into that slot clearly enough on the ESB and ROTJ helmets since reference of the others does not include images you can see into that slot. That Heilman ROTJ shot, its a compelling argument. But I think its a picture artifact there as you cant see anything like it in a much clearer picture like the attachment shows. I have ESB reference as well and I dont see anything but even machining.

Yup, there certainly are some people out there too full of thier own importance.. They are generally people I stay far away from. Bottom line is, you make a great product and have many supporters not only due to that, but also the way you conduct yourself in a really great manner. Thats who i, and I presume most, would rather surround ourselves with.. :-)

Sorry man I'm not seeing it. I can see sort of round marks in your last ROTJ but that is the only picture like that I have seen. I have to say photo artifact.

Here are some better resolution shots and I dont see anything but the bottom of the slot. The ESB has either paint or dirt at the top and bottom of the slot but no psychical disruption.

I got to be honest I think you dont want to see them , but if its not to late feel free to use it,
all those pics I put up show it quite clearly click on them and blow up the image, then go look at a pic of the Banazi helmet see were the pilot holes are on that and work out were they would sit and there smack in the slot,
    Any

I promise you I am trying to see what you are seeing. Can you use my picture and precisely mark where you can see anything?
I know all about the Banzai helmet and where the holes are on that. Im looking in those places and not seeing anything.

In some pics it doesnt show due to angle and flash but the ROTJ pic you posted you can see the one on the lower section though onlythe top half as from the angle and the top one doesnt show,m as it is clearl there in the hielman pics and being the same helmet this proves it can was out due to photography,
any way no isue I see it you dont we can agree to disagree

Just trying to help de-escalate here... could different helmets have had different methods of attachment?

Maybe a quicker setup was discovered?

Sometimes when I do some routine/ repetative work I switch up the order to see if it goes faster/ easier.

I've always been a proponent of those marks simply being the "stop and go" mill mark points of the depression of the bit
used to cut the trench. The same artifacts can be seen to varying degrees on the Commando8 ears. They vary because
although machine milled, it will be a little different each time depending on how many passes are made each time to cut
    the trench

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

Sorry James, but I'm not agree with your theory! I searched the Gallery to see if the ESB and the ROTJ helmets shows the ends of the screws or not, but my search had negative results. In the last couple of days I did some measurements and comparisons of the left ears' attachments. I used mostly the damaged Sandy helmet because its left ear is missing and this is the only helmet that shows directly that particular area:

    sandy-left-ear-01.jpg sandy-left-ear-02.jpg

Here are the results of my measurements regarding the left ears' lower screw placement:

    esb-vs-rotj-vs-pp3-left-ear-comp.jpg

Looking at the Banzai helmet (which, if I'm not mistaking, is in some way related to the ESB Hero helmet), the upper screw seems to be in the upper end of the left ear's trench, but the lower screw hole is not visible and might be the same with the ESB Hero's placement, which is a bit above the lower end of the left ear's trench.

    banzai-left-ear.jpg

But because this helmet has fan made modifications (especially the missing right ear's dome platform) it's possible that the screw placements to be altered too.

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

If any thing your comps galvanize my theorie , the ESB hero screw is to high to go in to the wedge part,an we cant see were they are on the ROTJ ,
An the Banazi helmet isnt actuallly fan made, far from it, and the red lines you marked on it for the ear tend to slid to far back on the lower half of the ear,
Blow up the hielman pics, you can even see in the slot that the to suspect holes are bronze not silver, and there is any pics clear enough to show themthey are there ,

And mabey some better refrences, may come up soon,,

I didn't said that the Banzai helmet is fan made, but it was slightly altered in a way or other.

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

OK! Let me tell you the other way. If we look at the Sandy and the Banzai helmets, we can see the upper (Banzai) and the lower (Sandy) screw's presence, and with some help we got the following measurements for the visible end:
around 3mm. The left ear is 12mm wide and the trench is 7mm deep, so we got a 5mm thickness without the trench. If the screw's visible end is 3mm long, it still remains 2mm to be visible in the trench's end:

    left-ear-front-view.jpg

Edit: the image file was corrected because the trench is around 7mm deep and not 5mm as I stated.

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

Im all for theories and mine may not be right, , how ever were are you getting the mesurments for how deep the trench is,
on the ESB hero you said the screwis 15 high, if you measure almost any ear youl see that the trench ends at 15 ml, also what makes you think the screws are only that length, just because in the Sandy helmet its sticking out that far doesnt mean that is all the way through , as its clear the ear has come off mabey the screw was undone some of the way thus making it come of,,

I still see enough holes in your argument that you could be wrong, but that said you are proving there is good popssiblitiy Im wrong, either way you can see them in the Hielman pic,? and otherss

Re: My new Fett helmet sculpt

Corrected the trench deep in post No. #68 from 5mm to 7mm.

Yes, I can see something in the Heilman photo but there are at least 3 visible marks in that trench:

    rotj-heilman-left-ear-trench.jpg

I can't prove or disprove what has been said here, but most of the facts lean to a negative result.

You are right! This feature doesn't do major modifications to the left ear and the helmet, so we better focus on your helmet casting.
