According to my research (and I've only been a member for a few days, correct me if I'm wrong :P) here's the best helmets available on this forum.

You won't go wrong with either of Filandrious' finds. I am working on one of the Cold Casts now, and if I get another it will likely be the GMH. There is a wealth of info buried here, and the search functionality of this forum works far better than most.

    Welcome!

I know it sounds crazy, but unless you've got lots to spend on pre-made, pre-painted parts, one year is probably not going to be enough time. If you're lucky you'll catch a helmet for sale in The Cargo Hold, but if you're talking to one of the guys on here building em, there's usually a bit of a wait for the good ones. Of course, the helmet is the most important piece, but there's a lot more work to be done and it's rare to find someone selling a complete costume, let alone one that'll fit you.

I've got a really flexible work schedule, experience painting, and a garage that's mostly unused, so I thought 6 months would be plenty of time to build myself a fett. It's now a year and a half later and I'm still working on it. It was wearable in 6 months, although slightly embarrassing next to the other Fett's at Dragon*Con last year. It was almost a year before I thought it was worth posting pictures of the whole thing on here, and now I wanna delete those old posts because since May I've found better parts and built better parts (my skills seem to be evolving at the same rate as the costume). To me, it's become a neverending game of asking myself "Does my Fett really need that part?" or "This part doesn't look quite right, should I replace it?" followed by "Is it worth it to buy one, or can I build it from scratch and/or found parts?"

    -----------
As far as advice on which helmet to buy, I have only had my hands on a few, and they're not the most accurate available. I will tell you that Cold Cast is heavier than you think it will be. From what I've read, it's a mix of fiberglass and aluminum. My earcaps are cold cast, and they definitely feel like metal (although you can bend the thinner parts if you're not careful).

I have a Boba Maker and a FP Asok Cold Cast, both are great helmets and both have some small differences. The FP is heavier and the "resin" inside makes it thicker as well. The BM is similar, but the dent is different and it is lighter and thinner then the FP (besides other subtle differences). By no means does it feel fragile, just different. Now price, the BM is quite a bit more expensive then the FP. Is it worth it? eh maybe to the right person, but you can't go wrong with the FP.

However, I do plan to get a GMH at some point in time. You can't beat a bucket molded from a real Fett. That is accuracy to the highest degree.

A regular Fp helmet will be fiberglass just FYI. The Asok Fp budget is not really aluminum mixed with fiberglass either its a resin mixed with aluminum powder. If your just going for a costume and not super accurate go with the Asok being it's priced very nicely and readily available. The helmet doesn't weigh much I think the guy who said it was heavy exagerated a little as my Kevlar Helmet weighs more with all the foam lenses and such on it. The fg is just a lot lighter cause it's thinner. The bm isn't really worth the $ IMHO as it's not accurate and pricey. The Fp gmh has a wait from Fp but accuracy wise worth the wait time and it's not much more $ tha. The budget helmet. Although doesn't come witha rf topper spend your $ wisely and it'll go far I built a Fett in a yEar it can be done with a smart budget and patience on the cargo hold and vendors

Golden info all around. I've read about the Boba Maker, but that really clarify a lot of things.

As someone who is putting together their first Fett outfit and has no experience putting together a costume with this sort of detail, I really appreciate your comments above. It answers several questions I've had despite wading through a bunch of posts. As it turns out, I recently got an asok FP helmet and am still in the planning stages of how to work it. I didn't feel like it was especially heavy, though I didn't wear it for hours on end.
