    Helmet mole (borden connector) question

    Hey folks!

I noticed the ESB helmet mole looking like weathered brass, while the ROTJ one looks like weathered nickel-plated... My question is this: Were the borden connectors made of brass at one time? and How do you guys make an accurate ESB mole? Spidey, what did you use for the (gorgeous) JB Bucket?

Wasn't an actual Borden connector used on the JB project? I *think* that these are still plated so that when you sand back the plate it reveals the brass? - I could be wrong.

I haven't sanded/scratched up mine yet. you're thinking it's brass underneath there? Guess i'll rough it up with my dremel and see what I get.

    Spidey...? Any thoughts?

...how did I know this was coming??...
But you're right, cause they don't make it anymore.

My mother-in-law (before her passing) worked for an orthodontist, and I had him look at Reference photo after reference photo....he Immediately was familiar with what he was looking at....and stated, "to bad they do make that model anymore"...........
So the ones that we order now all the time, are three holes yes, but have to be Cut and turned around just to get the holes in the right place........close, but no Cigar.

Notice the holes...(for the record this has to have been discussed before?, right?)...There are Three different size holes, small, medium, large on the tool itself. In order to get the holes to match the exact position as the real helmet you have the Cut the borden tool on the back side, and then turn it around....thing about that is, you will find, as previously mentioned, once cut all the current borden tools are now made of Brass and silver plated.

Yeah... I think we have mentioned it a time or two... but it usually gets buried.

Not only do you have to cut and flip it but you have to very very carefully bevel all those tiny holes and the edge of the cylinder. What a pain!!!

No prob Sixx! Hope my curiosity help everyone! Sorry if this is already in another thread.

And generally what do you use to cut it with? My dremel cut off wheel won;t make it through the whole way. Hack saw? In the reference photo, it sort of looks like there's an underside lip or edge. In the pre-pro helmet interior, you can see a glob of epoxy covering the back of it, so it clearly is stuck through the cheek. That being said, would you just cut it in half between the face and the collar?

Re: Helmet mole (borden connector) question

If you had access to a lathe you could part it off just before the collar, then to chamfer the holes just use a deburring tool.
At least that's what I'm gonna do when I get my hands on one...

Re: Helmet mole (borden connector) question

If you have access to that equipment Mojo you could probably buy several, and fix them all and sell them here. I would consider buying one that's ready to install.

I know I've seen this info before so it has been discussed, but along with alot of the good info it gets lost in the threads; yeah for the wiki!

Re: Helmet mole (borden connector) question

Funny you mention that! I had access to a lathe. It was my uncle's in my Dad's garage. In fact I machined my own knee launchers and gauntlet darts. Even started my own aluminum beacon. Then he gave away all his tools and stuff (he's 86) Bum luck! I've posted shots of them. The knee launchers are pretty good, but the darts suck! Or rather, they're very inaccurate now that we know what they came from, and have very clear shots of them.

Back on topic though, thanks for the mole help. I'll be doing that this weekend.

I agree. I believe there would be quite a bit of demand for these.

I've got a Sgt Fang that I was planning on leaving the resin one in place because I didn't want to mess with attempting the fix myself but if there was one ready to install and if the price was right I would get it for sure!

slightly off topic, but what is the borden connector tool used for in dentistry??
and what does that have to do with whatever Fett used it for?

Re: Helmet mole (borden connector) question

The borden connector is a hose coupling. connects a 3-line hose to a compressor I'm guessing. As for Fett, and this is pure conjecture, it looks like its supposed to be a comm-link speaker or something.
