For those of you that have made a silicone mold of a helmet. How much material do you use on average. I'm looking to order some supplies and am not sure how much to order. Any suggestions ? I know it would be good to have extra but this stuff in not exactly cheap to have buckets of it sitting around.

i use mold max 30 for my molds. tin based silicone from smooth-on. i get through reynolds advanced materials in orlando. a 1 gallon kit is plenty for one helmet. you could probably get two molds out of that. about 100 dollars for that. then you make a mother mold from fiberglass. 30 dollars at lowes. i cast my helmets out of smooth-cast roto. 80 dollars for 15 lb kit. you will get about five castings out of it. all together you'll have less than 150 to make the mold, and it works out to be about 15 bucks apiece for the castings. not too bad. especially if you can sell a casting to pay for your habit! send me a message if you want to see pics of my helmet mold. also check out my iron man helmet pics in the sarlacc pit.

i used the rebound silicone from smoothon, which was a bit more expensive... about 175 for a gallon. but it is just about 2 helmets worth.

I would use rebound 25 with a thickener my self. You get more bang for your buck. Just brush on the silicone in layers, and you can thicken in to sculpt keys.

Dont forget to get some Ultracal or plasti paste for your support shell, you can also make it out of fiberglass.

I'm interested as well. I'm starting the search for casting materials for an Imperial Guard helm I'm working on. (minor hijack) I'd love that info, too.

I use rebound too. I really like it. I get 2 gal at a time (they call it a "gallon kit" but it's a gallon of side and A gallon of side B). I can usually get several helmets out of a kit - depending, of course, on how big they are. The Fett noggin took less silicone than any other helmet mold I've made so far, but you will want to be sure it's good and thick. My most recent mold is thick enough to be very useful for a while yet. If I wasn't trying to make my mold material go as far as possible I would have made it even thicker. Anyway, rebound 25 is the way to go in my opinion.
