Helmet Filler

    Helmet Filler

    Hey everyone! First post

Recently discovered this site while checking out Boba Fett things and I love this place. Then I spotted Rafals helmet template and I just couldn't resist!
I'm at the point of putting the cheeks in and so far it's looking pretty good but there is little marks on it and tiny gaps where I have been the most accurate with a craft knife

So basically I'm looking for a filler tutorial as I've never done it before so would be great so learn from someone rather than destroy my current progress. Also is it just like a car filler?

    Thanks all!

most of us use bondo auto body filler, you can pick it up at any auto parts store, or even a walmart. simply follow the directions on the can for mixing it up, and there are plenty of tutorial videos on youtube that would be easier to follow than trying to explain with the written word. my final bit of advice would be to practice a bit on something other than your helmet a few times until you're comfortable with using the filler.

Mix it with acetone/nail polish remover to thin it down if you're just filling small cracks.

Well It's made out of 2mm card so hasn't got a perfectly smooth texture so I was thinking of covering the whole thing?

Brilliant thanks so much for the template!

I wouldn't say it's going to be perfect by a long shot, I'm currently on the cheeks but it's coming together. I'll get some pics up soon

    Hey again!

I've been looking on YouTube for sanding/filler advice on helmet creation and I'm sturggling. I'm going to be starting on the dome tonight so should be awesome!

I think the card I've used may be a little too thick and it's taking several passes with a scalpel but it's super strong!

Can I just filler straight onto the card? As I've heard people using resin first?

    Sorry for the newbie questions!!

You should be able to use an autobody or plastic model filler right onto the card. Most of these fillers use a small amount of lacquer thinner, which will *slightly* dissolve the substrate for a good bond. It may take several passes for a clean, smooth, & consistent finish.
