    Full Size Helmet Interior

Well I've had a bit of spare time last week so I decided to try something I've always wanted to do for my helmet. I know there's been a couple guys who attempted this but I don't believe anyone's done it quite the same way I have. I've always liked the way Riddell did up their mini helmets so I decide to try and mimic the look and throw a few of my own details in as well. The BIG difference between my interior and that of others is that my pieces are made from FOAM RUBBER and are totally flexable, you can squish it and it returns to its normal shape and you can paint the pieces however you like. I just finished casting a test piece to see how well its going to work and well obviosly I'm happy with it because I decided to show it off. It'll will be a week or two before I get the other pieces done since I'll have to order in some casting supplies.
Of coarse I took progress pics of my build up. I can post those as well if there is any interest in that.

Will you offer them later ? How much would they cost. I also am toying around with this idea. Convert the inside of the Riddel helmet into the full sized one.

Nice job. I like the rubber idea versus the resin way. Much softer plus you're not constantly worrying about breaking or chipping it. Kudos, Jordy.

    Cool Jordy!

I second the "how much" question - I am almost to that point with my bucket and those look better than anything I would have made.

Is there room to hide electornics/batteries behind them?

Excellent. Foam - great idea. Won't hurt when you where the helmet. Progress pics please. Just wondering how you made(sculpted) them.

What a great idea! Looks awsome. I can't wait to see how they paint up. I wonder what kind of paint would work best for such a flexible material.

I smell an interest thread in the near future. Count me in!

I know i am a new guy but i work with foam rubber and latex a lot, a latex based paint is best for flexable pieces, mix latex with acrylic paint works well.
    Great idea by the way!

That shouldn't be a problem. You could even easily carve out an area to hide a battery using a razer knife.

Also the question came up of painting these. I'm pretty new to working with the material but the one thing that I have learned is to use acrylic paints. Maybe Frosty or another memeber who's used this material before could give us a quick tutorial.

I plan to install my own pieces when there done using window/bathroom silicone, Its got a strong hold and is still flexible. If that doesn't work(and I don't see why it wouldn't) I'll go with a Urathane based glue.

I have no idea when I'll be ready to sell these maybe in 1-2 weeks. The draw back is that its not like casting plain resin pieces, the material is really expensive and the process is time consuming. I'm not trying to milk my brothers here but I would have to roughly guess the price to be around $50.00 for the set.

Is there interest in the center piece that fits above your head? I never finished making one since it wasn't too practical I think for the normal to large Fett heads out there, there just wouldn't be room to fit your noggin.

Thanks for all the compliments guys!

That price seems really really fair! Considering these are fricken A awesome!
I'll keep an eye out for the run when you do 'em. Also would love to see a turtorial posted about how to paint on this material.
I was going to ask about that top piece, but thought too that there might not be room for it. Maybe make it half its size? So it doesn't stick out to far, but is there for some cushion for your melon. Well really look forward to seeing them painted and installed in your helm.

    Glad you're here MS!

I'd definately be interested in these as well. On a side note, maybe I'm a pessimist, but the first thing I thought when I saw this is how long will it be before some moron recasts these and sells them on ebay. I don't think it should be a problem if you sell to only board members though.

Wow I con't beleive the interest this has stirred up. Thanks guys! The only thing is that this is not a sign up thread. I'll post something in the Cargo Hold in a week or two. Ive decided to build something for the top just to help finish off the look. This will be an optional piece that you can get seperatly if desired. I'll post pics of the build up tonight. I didn't take a lot of step by step but enough to get the idea. I'll label out the parts that I used as well.

    Re: Full Size Helmet Interior

Well it's 2:30 AM Pacific and I just finished molding the rest of the pieces including a top piece. The top piece is way different from the Riddell helmet to keep things functional but it looks pretty cool none the less. I've got a friend coming from Vancouver in the moring to help out in the shop and hopefully in the evening I'll have a finished and installed set to show off. I will eventually get around to the parts break down and production pics. Have patience guys I've got alot on the go with the new born baby and all

    Great job

I have modded mine already but your pieces look great. Closer to the Riddell than i managed to make.

I don't have the skills or the facilities to make them like you.
I ended up using modelling clay , a blade razor holder, and odd bits and pieces from the hardware store

And foam pad kits that i've been making for a few people.

I'd been hoping someone would get around to making a Riddell based kit. Rubber is even better.
I'll keep my eyes open for your sign up thread
Hope you ship to the UK.

    Re: Full Size Helmet Interior

All Done!!! I had a lucky break yesterday and recieved my supplies 1 week early. I hope everyone enjoys these it was a lot of fun to build. I had some help today from a new friend here on the TDH(Although he has yet to post anything!) LAZY!
Thanks Cantina Dude! Oh and BKBT swung by today to bark orders at me...I mean to check out my progress. Nice to see you again.
I'm going to have to drop a bit of a bomb on the guys who were getting there hopes up on picking up a set. I can still make these things but My cost and time on these suckers is through the roof. I'm going to have to ask $65.00 plus the shipping(I don't know what that is yet but I'm sure it will be reasonable, the pieces are light and don't take up much room.) I never intended to throw a low price at everyone then Jack it up, but I just can't justify it for less.

Anyways painting was a breeze, Latex was not needed, I used a latex and brown acrylic on the cube area and it accually rubs off a bit. The rest Cantina Dude and myself painted up with regular acrylic and it works just fantastic.

For those interested I'll have a sign up thread in a week.
    Enjoy the pics!

Anxiously awaiting the sign up list! This is awesome!

edit: Hey Jordy, now that you have it in your helmet, how does it feel? Is this something we can troop in for a long time? Will we need any extra padding?

    Re: Full Size Helmet Interior

Thanks for the praise guys. Just to let you know I ended up using superglue to install the pieces. The larger "cubed" pieces although flexable needed a little more PERSUADING to stay down. My advice for others and what I'd do in the future would be to make 1 or 2 cuts in behind from top to bottom to help the piece flex into position. I have to wait for more foam before doing a run. I've got 2 liters on the way and that will me enought to do about 5-6 sets.

wow...5-6 sets looks like you are going to have to do at least 50-60 sets

oh yeah almost forgot...how much more for the piece on top? You mentioned it would optional or is that with the 65.00 cost now?

    Thanks MS!!

    To everyone,
I will be posting a tutorial on what and how to paint these excellent pieces created by our Marrow Sun. Being that they are made of foam latex you will need to paint them with a flexible paint called Pax. I'm gonna tell just how to do that. Like everyone here i cannot wait to get started!
