First post, first WOF bukcet build - cardboard!

    Hi!

My name's Peter and I'm living in Delft, which you may know is a city in The Netherlands/Holland.
I'm brand new to this forum and I love it! Although at first I had a hard time with all the acronyms , I've been browsing and reading lots of threads from the Boba-Helmet forum and I am very, very impressed with the skills of many of you painting, weathering and scratch-building buckets.

Before I registered at TDH, I stumbled across an Instructable (http://www.instructables.com/id/How-...ostume-helmet/) for a cardboard Boba Fett helmet by this genius called Honus. He and Alan Sinlair gave me inspiration to start off and build a bucket myself. It is a low-cost and relatively easy method to build a helmet. Thanks guys, you are true pioneers to me! :thumbup

I must say I started about three weeks ago, so the pictures I will post here are from the past. This gives me some breathing room, as I can only work an hour or so per day to build my cardboard Boba bucket. While I'm posting this thread, I have reached the stage where I am working on the range finder, including LEDs. So far I've created the bucket, the ears and the range finder parts.

Now let's see what a Dutch dude can conjure up and have a look at my first progress, about three weeks back:

Here a pic of the base with the dome still to be glued on:

I used all the tips and tricks Honus listed, such as misting the cardboard to be able to bend it into shape. This works really well and prevents the cardboard from folding and cracking. For the dome, this is great since the rounder the shape is, the easier it will be to smoothen the dome surface.

Here are a few pics with the dome parts partially glued on (I used white glue, normally used to glue wooden parts together):

And this is a close-up of one of the cheek sections, bent into shape and glued into place:

This is the point where I glued on the second outer layer, giving the bucket more rigidness:

And to top off for today, these two pics are of the circuit board vent-grille. This was a very detailed operation in itself, since I needed to bend the grille after I cut out the holes. All parts where then glued into place and the result is quite nice.

I hope to post more of my progress-from-the-past pics later this week. This should be no problem since I am enjoying a couple of days of X-mas leave from work.
Here in Delft it is past sleepy time I think I will hit the sack now. See you soon! 8)

    Greetz,
    Peter

Looking GREAT! Very nice! Keep us posted on your progress. I'll be watching this build closely.

Did you use 2 layers for the dome as well?

I love how the dome turned out. The triangles fit together perfectly! Good job on that.

Wow. Great job. The whole thing looks great. I am especially impressed with the vent though. Looks awesome! And the dome is perfect. That's got to be the best wedge-construction dome I've seen yet. Can't wait to see more.

Re: First post, first WOF bucket build - cardboard!

    Hi,

I'm back again and read all your wonderful replies. Thanks guys for all the encouragements. It's at least half the fun knowing that your work is being appreciated.

WizardOfFlight/Alan: It means a lot that you think I'm doing well (at least so far )! Thanks! But I would not have been able to even start with this project if it weren't for those excellent templates you provided. I am in awe. I'm almost nervous knowing that you're watching my progess. But I will keep posting with great enthousiasm.
For the dome I used a single layer. However, I used the templates before you made the update on the dome templates, increasing them to 103%. I guess I will be able to account for the 3% by applying the spackling paste or polyfilla. The final helmet won't be an exact replica of the original, but at least I will not be mistaken for a Tusken Raider mask !

Jaiden/David: Thanks for the support! I will certainly have some questions in the near future.

GYPSYBOY + tk7602: Indeed I was impressed myself with the keyslot cut-out. I didn't expect it to be so clean-cut. I guess good quality (yet cheap!) cardboard and a razor sharp knife will do the trick. I wasn't too sure how the vent would turn out after I bent it, since it also involved misting/wetting the cardboard. Usually cardboard expands at the corners due to the applied misting but this time it work perfectly.

And all you other guys, thanks for your comments. Keep it coming!

Now let's continue with the pics! Here we go:

The first in line is one of the rear of the bucket, with the keyslot area cut out. Also, I cut out part of the visor. Not all of it, to keep structural integrity:

In these pics I glued in the keyslot and secured it for drying with some clothespins:

    Lookin' mighty sharp!

While this was given the time to dry, I started working on the ears. I decided to go with the lamination technique, making the final pieces more solid as opposed to building them hollow. I first measured how thick every component needed to be and cut out enough pieces/layers to reach that thickness. The cardboard I used was about 2 millimeters thick so for the left ear I needed at least 6 pieces.

<Sorry for the lack of quality in the photo's, but I shot them with artificial lighting, as I do most of the building in the evening.>

After I glued several parts together, I started roughly shaping the left ear curve by cutting excess material with a hobby knife. At first it didn't look too charming, but keeping confidence helped me to persist.

For the right ear, which is a lot more complex I also cut out all the pieces I needed, using the W:thumbupF templates.

This particular part was the easiest:

The rest of the right ear parts were also laminated but took so much focus that I totally forgot to take photographs of all the intermediate steps . But the idea is basically the same; cutting to shape and then sanding it for eternity. Here are the results thus far:

The range finder stalk I also cut out of three layers of cardboard.

The center axis for turning the stalk up and down, I made from four circles of cardboard, glued on top of one another and centering it in the top part right ear piece.

Some more sanding and a lot of patience:

After reading more threads on the range finder I came across a few that incorporated blinking LEDs. I decided to go for that as well. Luckily I have a shop just around the corner which specialises in electronics (similar to Radio Shack). For about 4 EUROs I bought a mini-kit containing a small circuit board and two red coloured LEDs.
I realised that I needed to recreate the stalk in such a way that two wires (power supply) can run through it. The easiest was to cut a gutter in the center piece of the new stalk:

Cutting, folding and glueing the range finder to shape was not too difficult. My son holding the result:

The circuit board is small enough to fit into the range finder

To obtain the approximatly correct height for the LEDs to stick out, I mounted the LEDs on two layers of cardboard (three in total):

    Sticking out just right:

    Here's the lot:

These last few pics are of the bucket after the application of polypaste or spacklingfilla:

It will require a lot of elbow grease to get that surface as smooth as silk! A friend of mine made a smart-*** remark by saying that for the next few days I would be shining my helmet LOL!

Close-up of the left cheek, still to be sanded to shape:

That's it for now. Feel free to post some comments (both positive and critical are welcome) and tell me what you think. Just keep in mind that I'm a rookie and still have a lot to learn. Right now I guess it is time to do the dishes and clean up the laundry. Tomorrow we will be celebrating Christmas with family and friends at our place, so I guess no posting for me. Hope to be back with some progress pics pretty soon!

    Take care and Merry Christmas,
    Peter

    Hi everyone,

Back from celebrating Christmas and had a wonderful time. I hope you all enjoyed the Good Spirit and some quality time.

Thanks for all the replies and feedback all of you have given. It it nice to be appreciated.

Haven't had too much time to spend on building, but yesterday I picked up where I left off: sanding the dome.
Boy oh boy, what a time consuming activity that was, and still I'm not fully satisfied about the result. But maybe I should be less critical..... see for yourself in the pics below.

I also wired up the RF stalk and this worked perfectly:

    Glued on the top layer:

Wires sticking out of the top:

    And the bottom:

After sanding the dome (the bathroom is covered in polyfiller dust!) there still were some small dents and holes which I filled up:

After drying and again sanding, sanding and oh, did I mention: sanding? I cut a hole in the dome for THE dent and glued a piece of cardboard to the inside of the bucket:

    A close-up:

I partially filled it with some polyfiller and also cut out the arrows:

That's my progress up 'til now. Hope you enjoyed the pictures (they're always the best part of any post ).

I still need to do a lot of sanding for the cheecks, but I don't know when I will be getting to that. For the time being I still have some days of leave left and we're close to celebrating New Year's Eve. Me, my partner and our son will be spending some QT for the next couple of days so I don't know what I will be able to do on the bucket. Patience is the key 8).

Before I end this part, I have a question about preparing for painting the helmet. I would like to know if any of you guys have experience in painting up cardboard buckets, and what primer to use? Should I first coat the cardboard with anything? I read about MinWax Polycrylic Sealer, but I don't think we have that here in Holland. Or could I use spray primer straight away? Please share your thoughts and advice. Thanks for looking!

    Back soon,
    Peter

Re: First post, first WOF bukcet build - cardboard!

Before adding any primer to your bucket, you should definitely think of sealing it. I used poly eurethane on mine, but there is a product specifically for cardboard that will make it more rigid and waterproof. You should be able to find it at an art supply store or hobby shop.

If you can't find the cardboard specific stuff, you could try one of the many types of wood sealing finishes. It might get a bit smelly, but with multiple and light layers, it should do the trick.

Than you'll be ready to hit it with primer than paint. ( most use automotive primer as it will fill in minor imperfections, you'll need to give it a light sanding before the application of the paint though. )

It says in the istructable Minwax Polycrylic sealer, and thats what i'm using. But, what brand it is in Holland, I do not know. Maybe try looking up the specifics of Polycrylic sealer and find a match of a product in Holland.

Jango72 and SpartanFett: Thanks for the feedback on my question guys! I think I will find what I need if I look what type of product or chemical composition Polycrylic sealer is. Maybe the Bob Ross Shop here in Delft can help me .

Not much time for progress today. I worked a little bit on the dent. Here are some pics. Still a bit "rough around the edges":

Not yet finished with it, but I'm getting there.
    That's it for now.

Re: First post, first WOF bucket build - cardboard!

    Hi,

Back again since a long time. Holidays and work have been taking up most of my dent-time, but I have been doing a little work on my bucket.
To start where I left off, here's a pic from the front of the helmet. I hope the dent is sort of in the right spot. If not, I'll have to Photoshop it .

Anyway, most of the progress has been sanding the cheeks and attaching the right ear mounting piece for the RF stalk.

Glued in some magnets for attaching the ear cap:

It snaps on pretty tight for a cardboard creation:

And as you can see from this animation, the RF stalk is fully moveable and there is enough friction to hold it in the upright position:

So next will be the sealing of the surface with acrylic resin. I need that to be as smooth as possible so I will need to figure out what applicator to use and if I should dilute or thin down the sealer. I will do some tests on a sample piece of cardboard.

Hope you still enjoy this thread, despite the unanticipated delays. Thanks for lookin'! 8) and hopefully back with more soon!

    Greetz,
    Peter

Keep confidence dude! Just enjoy what you are doing, because it inspires a lot of people!

Thanks for all the encouraging replies! It really motivates me too keep on doing the best I can on this cardboard scratchbuild.
Today I found a timeslot to actually seal/prime the lid with some acrylic resin I found in a hobby store. It is especially meant for paper and cardboard type of materials and is a good primer for almost any type of paint. A couple of thin layers should seal it perfectly.
Here's a pic of the first layer:

And here is the 360 view:

Once all three layer have been applied, I can start on the real challenge.... painting it in ESB colours!!
But first I'll have to find out what the corresponding colours are called here in Holland. One shop I visited sold Tamiya Model Kit spray and brush paints. I don't quite know if these paints qualify as the enamels described in the sticky: "AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED" or "Rogue Studios' ESB Color list & Painting Techniques". I'll do some more inquiring.
That's it for now, stay tuned for more soon!

As most of you/us know, it can be hard sometimes to find time for hobbies, even on weekends. Work can be a killer and the family life needs full attention and affection and has without question priority.
But every spare minute I will spend with great enthousiasm on my dented helmet! And here are some updates - be it not many:

Since the construction and sealing & primering of the bucket is more or less complete, I started painting the partially assembled rangefinder with flat black and aluminum:

The part of the rangefinder which is normally opaque, I still need to paint in a matching color. Also the "polaroid" part (ESB style) needs to be put on.

And the flashing LEDs are working too, woohoo!!

I gave the dome and cheeks a POG treatment. The colour in these pics doesn't look like POG, but in normal daylight is looks okay.
I don't own an airbrush, and I couldn't find the spray can version of POG here, so I used a paint roller and carefully applied the acrylic. Did not turn out too bad.

And I also created the smallest part of the helmet; the Borden connector tool (out of cardboard ofcourse!)

Hah! This thing is so small that it is difficult to not lose sight of. As a matter of fact, where did I leave it.....oops!

This project is so much fun for me, that I decided to simultaneously build another two out of cardboard (don't know yet when...). One big and one small version for my kid. Since Alan increased the size to 103% on the dome templates, it should be even easier to construct a perfect dome for these! I guess I can never give enough credit to the WizardOfFlight! Thanks, and thanks again Alan!! Superb templates!!

Now it is time for me to hit the sack, as I end this post at 23:47 hrs Central European Time.

Thanks for all your positive replies and stay tuned!
    Peter

    Thanks.
I drew a little circle on a piece of thin cardboard and cut that out with a hobby knife. Punched the three little holes with a belt puncher and repeated the whole thing twice so I ended up with three Bordens. I glued these on top of each other and sanded the edges as smooth and as round as I could with very fine grade sanding paper. The result is what you saw in the pic. Only thing left is to primer it and glue it to the right cheek.

    easy......

Hi Peter, yes I will start with new ideas hopefully very soon. Right now I am between modeling fascination my family and way too much work.
Some hours ago I got a new son (Second one)!!! Liam David, he is absolutely lovely!!! Man what a boy! 15 days over natal day. We had a hart time, you can believe.

I am sorry that I am so slow with the bucket tutorial, my helmet is almost done, but still a lot work to do. Your helmet is so great I feel quite honored that you have read my tutorial. It seems like you can not learn any more you have extremely magic hands! I like the card board material a lot! Maybe better than styrene...

Keep on Peter, you might be faster finished than me!

    Hi Chris!

Thanks for your kind comments and CONGRATULATIONS with Liam David! I wish you and your family lots of happiness and health!
Be sure to take all the time you need to recuperate from the exhausting period you and your wife faced.
(Too bad we don't have a separate "Baby Fett" forum here on TDH haha!)
In due time, I hope to see more from you on TDH.

    It's really cardboard, buddy!

Today I decided to give the killstripes a try, so I masked off the area with blue masking tape. As a template I took Count Dookie's killstripe PDF. Great stuff Count D!!! Thanks!
As I read in many a thread, I masked the damaged area's with Winsor & Newton Masking Fluid.

I dried pretty quick, so next thing to do was applying the yellow paint. I used an acrylic called Insignia Yellow. In several thin layers I used a sponge to apply the yellow and it turned out pretty well.

Not much paint needed. Here's the stuff I used:

After drying, I pulled away the masking tape and rubbed off the W&N fluid. This is the result:

Not too bad for a first time(r)! Although the killstripes are a bit too close to the rim of the mandibles, I am happy how it turned out.

That's my progress up 'til now. Hope you enjoy the few pictures.
I know it's not even close to the forum subject (and I promise not to do it again) but I would like to share this next little story with you.

This Saturday I/we will be celebrating my girlfriend's birthday so probably no posting. My son and I created a little clay sculpture for her as a birthday gift. The story behind it (I'll keep it short, I promise!) is that here in Delft there was a brick wall near a peanut butter factory which had grafitti art on it. We liked it a lot and even took a picture of it:

Unfortunately, this wall had to be broken down due to the factory rebuilding part of their site. So all that is left is this picture and the memory of this grafitti sharkwhalefishythingy. David and I decided to make something 3D out of it and this is what we came up with:

I think we captured it close enough! We hope she'll like it.
Anyways, time to count some sheep. It's late and I need to sleep.

Hah! Trooping here in Holland is not that popular as in the U.S. Besides, I've started painting it already...

Well, it's been a while so here some updates.
Building from scratch is one thing, but painting this bad boy is a whole different ball park!! Step by step I'm discovering the best ways to use paint and brushes and rollers and masking tape and fluid, etc. I guess I consider this bucket to be my prototype and test model for my first paint job. Here are some pics:

The basic paint job, applied balck to the cheeks:

I cut out the polaroid frame using the W:thumbupF template.

    Paint it black!

Some more silver detail. I should really shoot during daytime. These nightshots are pretty lame...

And some more silver on the cheek sections:

I gotta find myself some red acrylic matching the Caboose. I found one which is a bit too dark/brownish to my taste so I didn't aplly that one yet.

Still got a long way to go, but enjoying it and peeking at some of the most gifted here on TDH. Superjedi, Spideyfett, SD68 and... you guys know who you are! You give some excellent examples, and set a very, very high standard!

Thanks for looking and back soon.

When that lid is finished I doubt very much that anyone would suspect it was cardboard without inspecting it very closely. Stunning.

You know, something just occurred to me (as random things always do when I'm up at 2 or later in the morning screwing around on my comp)...Boba must go through a LOT of helmet visors. I mean, you see all the damage and scuffing to his helmet, especially the red trim...

    Great work to man.

The pics pretty much say it all. Both layered as well as topical techniques have been used. Many thanks and kudos to Count Dookie for the paint schemes!! :thumbup

I ain´t in the 10%, but thanks dude!

    More pics:

Here I added the white label on the left ear. Since I am using cardboard type materials mostly, I figured that the easiest way to get the label onto the ear was the following. I printed out the label (Count D template!) on plain white paper (cardboard family!) and cut it out with a pair of scisors and glued it onto the ear. And it worked pretty well! Also added the light gray area's on the ear:

And some of the dark gray details too:

    Better visible without camera flash:

On top some Caboose (actually my own mix of reds and greens):

*Phew*... still got a looooong way to go.
The paint job is far from being movie (or AoSW) acurate but hey, who's lookin'!?

    To be continued... 8)

I have not checked this thread in awhile, but glad I cam back. Wow!! I cannot believe its cardboard. Not only the helmet itself, but especially the ears, rf, etc. This thing is simply fantastic

This all might just be photoshopped.... LOL
    Dankjewel gast!

    On with the paint pics!

I applied some more dark gray to the mandibles (no camera flash):

    Camera flash set to on:

Also dark gray on the lower cheeks:

And finally, some dayligt shots! But even now the colours look different from the real deal (in-person):

I put the lid on a self made standard, so it's free floating now:

    More gray...
When that's about done, I will put on the PPR Maroon.

Did some work on the "cat-scratch"; after this dries I will put more detail in it:

And on the left side added the silver damage between the kill stripes:

Next up should be some serious work on the back section:

More to come.... Stay tuned! 8)

Wow... I mean... just wow... I just posted the beginning of my bucket and now I want to abandon it in order to follow in your cardboard making footsteps... I kneel at your craft making feet sir, for you are a master.

What was it you said you used, polypaste or some such for the filling out process?

A master I am not (yet ), for there is still much to learn. But don't let this ol' thread be a threat to your own skills. Just go ahead and do that bucket man! Scratch buckets are always fun to do and see. Good luck dude!

Thanks and I would be honoured if you incorporated my ideas into your creation! Let's see what you can do bro!

    On with the show....

A few pics only. Some minor detail added to the gray and silver scratches on the dome:

And a small deviation from my project... just a short one, really

As I was jogging (during my lunch break) along a river close to where I work, I saw something which reminded me of a certain part of the Fett cap:

    In close-up:

Just thought it was sort of freaky. Even the colour surrounding the lid was POG-ish.

Anyways, to top off this session, I masked the back part of the helmet with the good old Winsor & Newton fluid.

    Back soon!8)

    Latest update:

After masking the back I put on the greenish blue paint which resulted in this:

Then all I had to do was wait for a couple of minutes and peel off the mask:

So now the bucket looks like this in 360 view:

Up next: details on the back section!
