Dec 26, 2011, 7:50 PM - First ever Boba Fett Helmet scratch build #1

Hi guys, I'm happy to be a new member of TDH and i will be doing stuff every so often since i have a little more time free from College work for a while and want to do something to get my mind of off stuff.

So heres the very first stage done, I used WizardOfLight's helmet templates on some thick card and so on.

I know the dome is looking fairly... shabby. But it will be fine, I'm going to go to the shops tomorrow and get some FibreGlass Resin and resin this bucket up a few times and apply some bondo and the dome will be fine in the end. I will post more pictures when i start, make a video perhaps. And post them then.

Thanks for looking! And all advice is appreciated. But i do know what I'm doing (Im from the 405th Halo Prop Making site) So be technical as you like!

Looking good! If you frequent the 405th site, I'm sure you know what you're doing with pep builds. Excited to see how this ends up!

Well i have started with the resin and have 2 layers on so far, might get another 1 or two in before tonight.

The dome looks a mess but i just needed a solid structure to work on for when i use the bondo on the top. Anyways heres the progress so far:

Tomorrow I am planning on using my dremel to remove the visor, then apply the Bondo (P38) and sand the dome to shape.

If you were wandering i did do this in a very well ventilated area wearing a respirator, then i moved it to a warmer location for 30 mins before applying the next layer.

Heres a little progress on the inside of the bucket,

Im happy with the progress so far, and as you can see in the second photo i used a bit of cardboard to make the back of the bucket a little bit more round. You can just about see the odd shape in picture one thats now corrected in picture two.

And i hope somebody will be interested in my project with me as it will give me a bit more of a morale boost and assure myself that I'm not going to quit halfway through

So hope you like the progress so far.

Good luck to you! I downloaded some Pep files as well, but I have no idea if I'll ever get around to making it.

I decided not to add anymore tonight, so i just sanded the dome and front a little so theres a little bit more to sand flat and then apply another thinner layer over the top to smooth it out as much as possible:

Nice and smooth...er than it was at least

Your build is good, but I have to correct some of your build mistakes. First of all, the dome shape is wrong, especially the left side. If you think that you will correct this with bondo, then you will need a lot of material which will result in extra weight in the helmet's left side. The second mistake is that you didn't used the inner layer of the helmet, and this is actually the part where the dome is attached and not to the outer layer.

You should consider using a thicker cardboard, this way your helmet will have a sturdier shape and you will use less bondo.

I hope I didn't offended you. Keep up your work and result will be fine.

Oh i know the dome sucks at the moment =P Ive never had much luck with making domes from stencils like the one i used on this one. Pepakura domes are nice, this one... not my thing.

I have lots of bondo to use, and I'm planning on making a mould in the end, so the total weight of the helmet may not matter at this stage.

Thanks for the advice though! I love your work too!

Quick update as I'm getting there pretty quick now

Just waiting for my dad to come home with some wet n dry sandpaper to finish the ****** cheeks finally.

Then I'm going to completely smooth over the whole helm in whatever place that needs it with slightly more liquid Bondo (p38) mixture for the finish.

Then I'm going to see whats next.

Anyway heres the progress on the dome which is getting more of a dome shape now

I just applied some more to dome and it looks just about right. And I'm sanding it down to the right size by hand all over.

The one place i have not don't anything to is the very back. I think I'm going to leave it until i put in the keyholes and stuff.

But tonight I'm going to make the ear pieces, keyhole and hopefully the range finder.

Thanks for showing interest in my project I'm going to go check out yours now.

    Update:

I have wet'n'dry sanded all over the bucket and discovered that there will be a lot of touching up with small blobs of Bondo (p38) and re sanding. Not a lot of work just quite time consuming.

Heres what i have at the moment:

Name:	Helmet Stage 16.jpeg

As you can see the dome is now normal! Yay

But you can also see many dips etc... and I'm going to do another layer of fibre glass inside to give it a little more strength and rigidity.

If anyone can tell me a good method for removing little indents and so on please let me know.

I decided that i would make the circuit cover for the back of the bucket (I forget its proper name)

It worked out better than id hoped actually:

Simply Fibreglassed the underneath part and resined the surface so it soaked in.

Oh well i will just sand the part flat then add another section onto it when i put it in the bucket and the Bondo (p38) will cover the gap.

So all is well. Thats enough hard work for today, up in 5 or 6 hours to carry on after a good ol'McMuffin and a cup of tea and lots of TV whilst i sand the dome.

Thanks! And i will, as soon as I've had some break first I'm going to go mad on it and probably get the main helm and possibly both ears done by the end of the day... Hopefully that is.
