Finishing question - Gloss, Matte, Satin ?

Hi all

When you finish a part and want coat it what finish do you use ?

I am using humbrol and i have :

Satin
Matte
Gloss

i assume gloss is out of the question and its between matte and satin ?

and do you thin these down though an airbrush or use them as is ?

Thanks

I believe it all depends on what kind of Humbrol colour you got,for mine I went with the list thats on here and mostly all my paints I picked up were matt finishes. When im done with the final touches I will give it a matt clear coat just to seal it all up.

You'll not get Humbrols through an airbrush without some sort of thinner. It's like treacle in the tins but once you add the thinners then a little goes a long way. It's really important to make sure the paint is thoroughly stirred and mixed in the tin before you mix it with the thinners because a lot of the pigment can hide in the bottom of the corners. I usually spent a good five minutes stirring each pot and really scraping the bottom.

I used all Matt colours from the adpated Terminal Fettler list and they're all Matt (except silver of course). I didn't feel the need to add another coat to protect it with a clear coat or anything like that. I thought it was pretty hard wearing as it was. Recommend about a week for the silver to properly dry, maybe more; depends on climate and conditions etc.

I think it depends on whether you plan to wear it or just display.

If display, you shouldn't need to do anything.

If you're going to wear it, I would go with a Matte coat.....

I really like satin finishes. When I airbrush (which I haven't been doing for this costume), I even add satin varnish to the paint I use.

I coat my pieces with Testors dull coat and then when it's dry, buff it lightly with a Scotchbrite pad to bring it back just a bit from "dead flat."

I'm using Rustoleum matte over all my work, I like the dull finish. It also evens out all the colors I'm using. My base colors are satin but my damage and details range from flat to gloss. With the matte overcoat they even out (dulling the super bright silver in the process) and protecting everything.
