    Dec 21, 2015, 2:17 PM - Update 08/03/16 Fettastic GMH ESB Helmet Paint-Up #1

    Hey Team!

I have been hesitant to post anything on this forum because there are so many talented people on this site it can be a little intimidating. First off this is my first bucket and it will definitely not be my last. I have had so much fun learning and experimenting with this project, I'm not even finished yet and I can't wait to do another helmet! There has been a lot of trial and error because I like to try to do things my own way and most of the time to a fault.

    Ok, a few disclaimers...

**This is not a film accurate ESB Helmet. This is a GMH Helmet painted ESB style. If you know anything about the GMH Helmet you know that there was more physical damage than was used for the ESB Helmet. I left the original GMH physical damage and also added the known physical damage of the ESB Helmet. The intention was never to produce a 100% screen accurate ESB helmet.

**The colors are not a perfect match to ESB nor do I claim them to be the best choices. I mixed, matched, and blended different brands and colors of Acrylic paints to what I thought was close to the ESB Film Helmet.

**This is not a how to thread. I enjoy watching other peoples work and thought maybe others would enjoy watching mine. This is just a post to show my progress. Obviously if anybody has questions about any of this like color choice or how I did something, which I can't imagine hasn't been done before, I will be more than happy to share.

Masked off the rest of the silver damage for the dome, cheeks, mandibles, face and keyholes to lay down the grey.

Masked off the grey and silver to lay down the green. Experimented with different masking fluids and unfortunately lost some fine grey details. The masking fluid I used was too sticky and peeled up some of the grey. Very disappointing and will have to touch up later topically.

Finished the cheeks. Again, more detailing peeled up with the masking fluid and some black seeped through the tape. Ahhhhh. Will have to touch up topically.
Also, will have to post better pictures of the ears when they are finished.

    Nice back panels. Sweet.
Some of the later shots looks like the helmet has picked up a dome distortion, has it?

Thanks by the way! I'm not sure I understand what you mean about the distortion. Are you referring to the curvature of the dome? Maybe you can specify on which picture it is most evident and I can identify what you're seeing.

Ok, I know what you are talking about. Yes the dome is actually shaped that way. It's only from the back at the correct angle that it is noticeable as you can tell. I was never sure if this is how the GMH is supposed to be or if it was just a shotty casting. This is the first casting I have ever seen in person so I am inexperienced in this matter.

I laid down the red for the mandibles and I'm not 100% satisfied with how it turned out. In some light I like it and in other light I hate it. I believe it is a little too red for ESB. Probably going to remask and repaint.

Also did some airbrush weathering to the cheeks and dome but need to wire wool just a little bit.

I've owned two of the GMHs and neither exhibited this issue. I bought both of mine from Bill 'Asok' Warren. It might not be down to the casting. If the helmet is made from slush resin they can warp when exposed to heat. My MR recast was resin and when I was part way through painting it I left it on a stand in direct sunlight and the dome distorted with a lump in the centre. Luckily it took itself back into shape when left in the direct sunlight not on the stand. My point it you may be able to manipulate it back into shape.

    Who made yours?

Yeah, I figured it was just a defect from the casting. It came that way from the get go. I purchased mine from I believe Class.Of.1984 off ebay. Yes, you heard correctly "off ebay" Lol. I purchased the helmet before even joining this forum. What happened was he sent me the wrong one. He ended sending me a blemished casting by accident but he ended up refunding me half of what I paid so I think I paid $100. For being my first bucket I couldn't be angry since I was on a budget anyways.

Ah, gotcha. Then obviously it's a casting/recasting issue. I wouldn't sweat the ebay 1984 thing; you can't act on information you weren't aware of can you and $100 is pretty cheap so you still might be able to iron out that distortion with a bit of care and a heat gun. Worth a go. Have a bucket of cold water on standby. works a treat.

Had a look at his ebay page. The one in the picture also has the same issue with the dome so I'd say all his helmets will come like that. At least you got some of your money back.
