FETT PRIDE cc WIP ; )

Hey guys- Well as I was nearing the finale of my sons hasbro mod, well... I decided to take the plundge and try my hand at an ROTJ lid for myself. That being said I contacted..yes...Asok. After explaining to him what I was doing, and that I needed a reasonably priced lid I could practice on, he was grascious enough to let me know he had a slightly "weathered" FP cc. Well, the rest is history, and after recieving the helmet after only 2 days I couldnt wait to get my hands on it! After getting home from work this evening, having dinner w/ my wonderful wife and son I embarked on my journey. Below are some shots of the initial stages..please feel free to comment as this is my very first build, as far as a helmet goes.

Some of the blemmishes im still working on, but overall I feel its a great start. I plan on spending some more time buffing out the cc as well as eliminating the blemmishes as much as possible, and what I cant get rid of...ill weather it : ). Well, all Its 11 PM and im calling it a night. Again, please feel free to help me along.
    Thanks
    B

Looking really great mate, nice work with the dremel as well (I know how daunting they can be). Those cold cast lids are something else when buffed up.

How are planing on painting it, airbrush, rattle can, layered...?
I Look forward to see what you do.

Alright guys- Spent some time working on some of the blemmishes. There were just a few very small cracks so after talking w/ Fett7 I elected to use glazing putty from Napa auto parts to remedy that situation. Pretty great stuff, and it dries very fast as I applied it at 2, and was able to sand it around 7 this evening. Although im going to sand the uneven areas over the next couple of days....here is what ive done so far.

    Sanded glazing puttty over ear

Although this looks a bit rough, its actually muuuuch better. Still wanna get a bit smoother though

These were a few of the tiny blemmished areas in the back panel

I also managed to get the T-visor cut out using a combo of dremmel and heavy duty scissors..thanks for the advice deadland!

Looking good, now all you need to do is cut that visor section out of your helmet and we can get that visor mounted.

well....u have to dremel it out as best you can the corners are tough to get with the dremel i file in there...and what i meant by file is the resin is thick and un even around the opening so ur gonna need to level it out so the visor will sit in there right

Alright...now were getting somewhere! Tonight I was able to mouse sand the puttied areas, and dremmel out the T-visor. With Fett 4 Reals "heads up", I was able to think bout how to get those tight temple areas on the visor.Choosing the small sharp bit attachment I dremmeled an oval shaped hole on both sides just enough to penitrate through the resin and cc. I also chose the "metal" cutting attachment as opposed to the "plastic" in order to make it an easier cut. That being said, by the time I was completing the lateral sides of the visor, the area just pops right out. Thanks again for the heads up Fett 4 real! Tomorrow I will smooth out the borders with a file.

Hey Fett 4 real-Got it! Thats what I was thinking ; )..because the thick part is only about 1/4" long. It just sort of lips out a bit on both sides so I figured I would very carefully dremmel it a bit, then finish w/ a file just to take some of that thickness off. Any other thoughts?

    Thanks

Alright- Moving right along...Managed to dremmel the visor section down to a reasonable thickness first, using the sanding bit on the dremmel, then smoothing out w/ 80 grit sand paper. Once deadland assists me with the visor install, I will mask all of the silver (cc) areas w/ some new masking fluid Fett7 recommended as its a bit thicker and easier to work with.

This is what I was talking about see the far helmet how on the lower back plate the artist has painted black on to the silver now weather there is liquid mask under parts of the blak or she scratched them of its hard to tell but for your purposses liquid mask the spots that stay silver the dust a coat of black with a light dust of gray on a few uneven patches like in the image same goes for the dome with the grey under the green liquid mask of the area that stay silver then hit bits of the dome with the gray sandy-helmets-01-1-.jpg

    if that makes sens

Hey jinto- Yep I see what you mean. Ill mask the "silver" parts then for some of the areas I will dust a coat of blak and grimy grey, then mask those.. then hit with the main color. Does that make since? Thanks again, I really think this will add another dimension.

It makes alot of difrence , remember to use liquid mask on the bits that stay silver under the black (the scratches) Also being its a CCand not paint if you gaff up and need any new or extra scratchs it wont be to hard to simulate them with out havbing to worry about going through the silver paint , how ever there are bits were the white of the gelcoat shows through so youl need to paint them on
,I believe the one in the far end of the pic is the ROTJ, so try and imitate the black in the same form Sandy did

Well guys- Nothing like a cup of coffee, Toy Story, and sketching on you BF FP CC on Sunday morning : )..So, I began sketching some of the pertinant weathered spots..you know, the "upside down Christmas tree, the "sad dog", and the "drooping dent". Anyways, I have also added a comparison pic (hope FP doesnt mind) as his ROTJ pics are amazing to work with, in order for you guys to see placement and spacing. It seems to be prett darn close. Feel free to comment.

That "reference" photo isnt of the real deal is it? Reason I say this is, theres no misting under the green in the top splotch of silver....as seen in MoM photos of the actual helmet. Having painted a few ROTJ helmets I slowly noticed as did a few others after researching the Sandy helmets had a misting of dark grey or black over the silver before paint...check out the pic from the gallery and look at the MoM for actual pics of the helmet using other peoples work is like passing a message down a line of people something always gets lost in translation

Awesome! I do have a couple of the MOM pics im referencing...I tend to bounce around to get different angles..a little from the MOM, a little from FP etc..Thanks. I can really see the misted black like you have been telling me, especially on the larger weathered spots. Is the dent misted?

Ok, I got all the weathering sketched out and a coat of Krylon clear coat as instructed by Fett 4 real. Once I get the visor installed and the silver masked I will begin the paint process. In the meantime, here are some shots as of today.

Not to downplay FP's helmet at all, but it's never a good idea to use ANY fan work as a reference, even something that good. We all make mistakes / cheat / cut corners / miss details. It's like anything else... a copy of a copy loses quality, then a copy of that copy loses a bit more.

Particularly since you can get every angle of the real RotJ helmet out of the galleries here, I'd say stick to just those.

It looks like you are off to a great start!

Alright guys- After deadlands phenominal help w/ the visor install, a little skewing issue w/ the mandibles (due to removal of visor), some UN-SKEWING : ) of the mandible..well as good as I could get it, I was able to mask and mist the dome this evening. I will most likely post some pics tomorrow evening as I would like to finish the second session of masking ( the black and grey misted areas), followed by the greens. phew!!! Deadland and I have also discussed that it would be best to follow a light version of jinto and Fett 4 reals misting and color protocal due to the fact I am rattle-canning (not air brushing). Once completed, I will have deadland detail via airbrush as there seems to be a good amount of overspray as well as progressional fading ( especially the back). Anyways, stay tuned for this evolving thread.
    Thanks

Alright guys..just as I promised... I have delivered! Here are some shots of the dome w/ the liquid mask removed. Overall, I am extremely pleased w/ the outcome so far. In order to remove the masking this time I used a rubber glue remover which allowed me to pull the latex, then clean off the excess. Also, although the pics arent the best of qualities, you can see the light black and grey misting over some of the "metal" areas.

    Obviously the actual ; )

Fett- Ya, I figure when deadland gets on it w/ the airbrush we can get more detail w/ the grey misting and black overspray. I wanted to be conservative this time around due to the fact that if I went too much..theres no going back LOL!

Hey all- Just peeled the masking on the posterior of the lid, with a paper clip added the scratches and miniscule black markings. Let me know what you guys thing thus far? This evening I plan to mask the lower cheeks and attempt getting the greens acurate.

    Thanks Deadland!
Fett- Its a mix of Krylon satin-hunter, and Spruce just as I did for my sons. Its brighter than the picture shows and very close the H photos..If you look to the far right of the 2nd picture you may get more of an acurate estimate. Also, I misted some charcol over the far right. Sorry, the pics are from my iphone so not the best quality ; ). Thanks for the input guys I plan on hitting the lower and upper cheeks saturday and sunday followed by the claret/ maroon early next week.

Hey Fett- Ya, I find w/ the rattlecans its challenging to get that back spot on as far as the brightness. I feel like I did get it pretty close..well, see how it comes together. Ill be looking for your input when I get the next group of pics up. Thanks man.

This is a great thread. I am glad to see that I was on the right track cutting out and sanding down my visor area. Now that I see yours, it is nearly identical!

    Thanks DarthVeach!
Question guys: With respect to the "lighter green" patches on the cheeks, is it actually a misted lighter shade, or a solid shade with a patch liquid masked off followed by a light black mist...then, once the masking is removed it appears lighter? Below is an example. Notice the upper area on the lower cheek.
    Thanks

What I do is put down the mask mist the grey, then mask again...then spray green, mask then mist grey again

Thanks Fett- Ya, I did the first part as you did although I misted some grey at the start as well. Im going to mask again tomorrow, hit green and mist. I dont want to get too dark because when I hit the blue on the upper cheek, the reflection really seems to darken the lower cheek making the lighter colors pop. I noticed this on my sons hasbro and was thankful I didnt go darker. Thanks man! Just as I thought.

Re: FETT PRIDE cc WIP ; )

Ok guys- As planned I was able to work on both cheeks ; ) today. I used a method very similar to Fett 4 reals however, w/ a slight twist. Once the silver was masked I lightly misted dark grey primer. Once that dried I masked those bits and sprayed a combo of greens then masked the "lighter green" areas. I then VERY CAREFULLY misted again. Once that dried I removed the masking fluid unveiling the lighter areas. Although, there is still a bit of detailing I will be doing along w/ deadland doing some finishing work w/ his airbrush I am pretty happy w/ the finish at this point. Below are a few photos of this process.
Also, I have documented this whole build step-by-step on a word document if anyone is interested I will post that?

Drum roll please! Well, almost anyway ; )...Minus the back vent, the ears (which have minimal work for ROTJ), the RF and deadlands final black wash and detail this bad boy is darn near complete..I just couldnt wait to post pics! A special thanks goes out to Fett 4 real for his super keene eye and attention to detail, Stormtrooperguy for his insiteful thread, jinto for his insite and expertise and deadland for his expertise and support. Overall, Im pretty happy w/ my first Fett! Thanks guys and stay tuned for the absolute finished product!

Hey buff Fett, This is how I do my ROTJ and other Sandy painted ears
I think with the ears you should tape the rest of the helmet andplace the helmet on the ground (do this on a large drop sheet of on the grass )with the left ear facing up and from 5 feet above spray your gray then some black then a brown , do this a few times and it will build up over spray and then go around with a file or sand paper on the edges andd try recreate the scratch patern on the ears when dry do the same to the other side

LOL - Hey guys, great thanks! Yes, I did hit them w/ the dark grey primer and was able to get a "quasi-pattern" that looks pretty good, although not screen acurate. So, that being said, I will go back and do as you guys suggested as the ears are definately less labor intensive. I need some RF assistance..anyone have advice? Also, got woodchucks helmet stands and they look awesome..will post pics later.
    Thanks

I use a dab of superglue...paint the inside silver and the outside silver...let it dry paint black on the outside....but leave the silver inside...so the clear resin doesnt look dark

I used nuts a bolts hard to explain really...kinda put nuts on a bolt...drill the stalk screwed the bolt into the hole tight...cut the head of the bolt off...attached the RF topper with the nut that was on the bolt when I stuck it into the stalk...that way it rethreads the bolt after dremeling the head off...

I had the opportunity to shoot this gorgeous thing tonight. Wow.

Flight has been booked. I told him Cairo, but actually I'll be heading to Montenegro. He will never see this helmet again. Keep it to yourselves.

Anyways, the paintwork is outstanding, with a new attachment method for the right earcap (one small screw rather than the usual magnets).

Enjoy the photos. This thing is a darling...
