Ok, here are some comparison pics of a FG DP 95, a FG DP Deluxe (re-cast) and my re-painted DP 97. The pics are kinda blurry, but gives you an idea.

(If the link does not work, you may have to copy and paste it in the address line of your browser.)

To tell you the truth, I have trouble fitting the FG 95 and Deluxe on my head, but the 97 is very roomy. It appears that the 97 is wider front to back. Of course this may be why there is no flare on the 97's. The 95 is wider side to side. Of course this is probably why it has more flare. The Deluxe is in between the 95 and 97 although it is definately taller so your chin is less likely to be visible.

Anyway, hope this helps those who are trying to decide which to get.

Later,

Hello all,

I just recently discovered this amazing forum. Unbelievable stuff here :) I started getting interested in building a Fett costume (although I haven't yet decided on Boba, Jango, or custom - maybe someday all three), but I'm slightly daunted by one possible problem -- finding a helmet that fits.

The only time I've seen Don Post helmets at retail was just prior to Episode I when Target put its old Star Wars merchandise on clearance. They didn't have a Boba Fett helmet, but the Stormtrooper, Imperial Guard, and Scout Trooper helmets simply would not fit over my head!

I've got a relatively big head (american hat size is 7 3/8, which is 24" in circumference -- here's a link to a good hat size table http://www.countrycalendar.com/Country_Store/hats/hat_sizes.htm

My question is - what size heads will the various helmets out there fit? Any of you have similarly oversized melons? :D Is creating a custom helmet through whatever means possible my only option?

Thanks for any input!

7-3/8 is not that big. I wear a 7-1/8 and you are only slightly bigger than that. Now a 7-3/4 or more is a melon. :) If you have got the funds (and are fortunate enough to find one), the DP Deluxe helmet is 15% bigger than the standard DP. There are also quite a few recast helmets out there that are bigger than the standards. Just keep your eyes open for them.

I have a relatively large melon on top of my shoulders and the DP Deluxe copy (I think.) that I have fits fairly snugly. Not a lot of room to play around with inside the helmet. No need for liners and such. :(

I picked up a DP helmet on ebay a few years back and I thought the thing was huge! I felt more like Darth Helmet from Space Balls than Boba Fett when I put it on. I always figured that I had a larger sized Richard Cranium than most as well, about a 7 1/8.

I just got my 95 DP with the white inside. Is it just me, or is this thing huge? Anyone else have one? Comments?

Well the DP 95 were the earliest of the run and had the best shape/plastic. Like all DP replicas, the earlier the run the better. The 95 had the best shape of the bunch. The 96 is comparable to the 95, though the visor is placed flush with the mandibles (red area of the T-visor). The 95 has a recessed visor area. Not that it really matters, because you'll have to replace it anyway.

The 95 was also made of a very sturdy plastic or vinyl that held its shape pretty well. Of course there is some warpage on the 95, but it is minor and correctable, as opposed to the 97 helmets, which most look like they been run over by the Slave 1. You'll probably get differing opinions on the 95 vs the 96, but both models are pretty acceptable. Stay away from the 97's. Most of the one's I have seen are just butt-ugly.

.....and I would consider tylerdurden an authority on the subject of helmets. Now there are a few 97's that aren't warped (like Fettpride's), but most of them have a flat top rather than the rounded dome of the original. That and them seem to be squished on the sides (aka warped). With some heating and manipulation, you may be able to salvage one.

Just some questions re the color of the vinyl inside the 95 DP helmet. I've read descriptions of the inside color of vinyl as white and some have been described as just green. Any significance to this? Does this indicate an earlier 95 version vs. a later 95 version? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks, Gregg.

The back of my helmet is stamped 1995 and the inside is green. It is a very sturdy helmet, much more sturdy than the '97 helmets I've seen.

I've never owned a DP 95. I did own a 97 in the beginning, but I quickly realized that with all the time, money and effort I was putting into making my Fett costume "just right"...a vinyl DP helmet of any year was just not going to cut it.

But for the sake of spreading useful info...here's the basic lowdown:

The only DP vinyl helmets worth looking at are the 95's. They're slightly larger and definitely sturdier than the ones which came afterward. The 95's also have a recessed visor area whereas the others do not.

There are 2 different DP 95 versions: the white interior and the green. The white interior is supposed to be the best. (A different, sturdier type of vinyl).

But then, as I said...I really wouldn't recommend a DP vinyl helmet of any year for anyone who's serious about their costume.

Fiberglass casts off of the DP Deluxe or from other sources are indeed more expensive, and often much harder to find...but they're worth it. They can make all the difference on your costume. Hope this helps.

I have a green interior DP 95. It's really sturdy and has a decent shape. As stated the vinyl ones are smaller than the real bucket. However, if you have a stature smaller than Fett (under 6' tall, skinny and narrow shoulder span) porportionatly than can be useful so you don't wind up looking like a Spaceballs character. -Mark

My current helmet is a white 95. It is not big enough for my tastes, but a good paint job can make a so-so helmet really stand out.

Here's my fiberglass DP Deluxe re-cast...

Much larger than any DP vinyl. The sides were also flared out just a tad bit extra during the casting to give it more of that ESB look. ;)

Hi Hoot, Welcome to TDH! I guess I get to represent the welcoming committee this evening, which is something I've never done before 'til now, but I'll give it my best shot! :D
There is a very good reason why the '97 is so relatively common compared to the preceding years of production, and that mainly is because not all that many people particularly care for its design. There are just WAY too many flaws with this helmet as an attempted replicated production prop that I personally think it marked the beginning of the downfall in DP's demise. The DP 95, on the other hand, is a much better choice on the list of what you're inquiring about, but finding one is going to be alot more difficult due to the fact that the people who have 'em won't part with them that easily because of their superior design to the '97 version. To answer your other question regarding materials the helmets are made of, I say, with the exception of the fiberglass DP Deluxe helmet, all the rest of the DP line is cast in vinyl/plastic with the '95 being the sturdiest of the three production years ( yet another reason that makes this such a rare find as compared to the other two years).
However, I think that if you hang around this forum long enough you'll discover that you have a lot more options in your custom Mandaloring -( I hope that is a word I can use without getting laughed at! )- than you ever could have imagined possible. The defunct DP product line is only a mere shadow of the artistic greatness to be found in this forum. We have a VERY talented and friendly group of artisans & costumers here who have made many accomplished efforts at placing Fett on a pedestal and it only seems to keep getting better! You've joined us at a very good time! Once again, welcome to the board and our obsession! :cheers
