ESB paintup!! DONE (MORE OR LESS)!!

I thought I´d share with you guys my helmet paintup.

I got my BM lid today, and I´m sooo happy with it!! Once I got it home I just had to start working on it, so I painted the inside black to start with.
After leaving that to dry for half a day I got started on the outside.

First, painting the base layer with Humbrol 147 (light grey). I´m using TF´s ESB paintup as a guide for this, since this is my first Fett helmet I don´t want to mess it up. Tomorrow I get started on the left ear.

(The images are mirrored, so no, the dent is not on the wrong side, hehe)

That's a beautiful bucket. I look forward to updated pics. Do you have any special plans for the interior of the helmet besides the flat black?

Re: My first helmet paintup (ESB)

Here are the tracings for the back. Just need to wait until tonight so the paint has fully cured and it´s on with the masking and second layer of paint. This will be covered with silver, and then I´ll mask a new layer for adding the dark grey and another one for the green. And so on, and so on, and so on, and so on...

Here´s some more progress guys. Tomorrow it´s on with the green on the left ear. As for the next colors on the back, I have to wait til my paints arrive so I´ll do some other parts while I wait.

Hope you like it (P.S! The large gray areas on the back are going to be beige, I just made a little booboo:-)

Re: My first helmet paintup (ESB)

    Thanks bro.

The different scrapes and scratches won't be über-accurate, I think I'd go insane replicating every single one. But trying to get it as close as I can. As the wise Boba Swede stated: I choose sanity above accuracy

Will probably be hitting a little standstill in the painting now, missing a lot of paints that I've ordered. But I'm leaving for Spain in a week anyway, so hopefully everything will have arrived when I'm back.

Re: My first helmet paintup (ESB)

Recently I recieved Stormriders awesome helmet interiors, so while I waiting for my paints from the states I thought I'd use some of the acrylics I have lying around to make the foam rubber a bit less "foamy"

Here's the pieces I have painted, the rest will stay as is.

These have been weathered more after the pics I showed in FettDads thread in the Cargo Hold.

    Thank my man!

Here are the finished pieces. Also included a shot of the paints and tools I used for this and a couple of detail shots showing you how cool it´s possible to get these without too much work.

I´ve written a short tutorial on how I did this for cupluv, if anyone wants it, just give me a hollar.

Re: My first helmet paintup (ESB)

Time for an update. I finally, after having to open a dispute with the webshop I ordered paints from, they arrived today.

Nothing to do but to get working then.

I finished up the left ear with the white "decal". I had a decal I was going to use, but I wanted to paint it in stead and in my opinion it looks better painted.

I also did the grey on the back panels. You´ll probably notice that the weathering is similar but far from the same as the original piece. But I´m happy with the results so far. You pro´s out there are welcome to chime in, so I don´t screw anything up though

With more experience I might be able to make it look better, but that´s a whole other helmet!

    On to the pics:

Re: ESB paintup!! UPDATED AUG. 7

    That looks very good cr4nky!

I just started my FPH to turn it into a ROTJ helmet.
And a PrePro helmet will be after that ... you see one never stops working on the Fett Baby!
So my personal Fett Family has 1 TF Helmet (ESB), 1 FPH (ROTJ) and maybe another TF for PrePro.

    Good job so far bro!

Ok, last update for today. Time to hit the sack. Feels good to get some work done again. Sunday will see more progress on the lid.

The grey is a little too thin along the back of the dome, but that´s a quick fix on sunday.

Re: ESB paintup!! MORE UPDATES AUG. 11!

Just a small tip: Use 0000 steel wool to slightly rub over the paint-layer. This way you get rid of all the scuffs of paint around the previously masked areas. You see all those paint-chips around the masked parts?

try it. You won´t regret it. But just slightly ... not rubbing away all the paint! :-) And please always use a "new" piece of steel wool for the different colors ... the rubbed-away color keeps into the old steel-wool.

    Great job so far bro!

I know... I du use it, just waiting for the paint to fully cure before I do it on the back panels. Already done it some on the one ear and the dent and cheeks. Works wonders for the looks.

    Oh, and thanks

    Re: ESB paintup!! BACK PAINTED!!

Finally the back panels are done (except for washes and other fun stuff).

In the left/right side pics the flash makes the colors look really dead and cold. The last pic kinda gives a better idea of how the colors look.

I think I´ll do the ear tomorrow.

    Hope you like

Oh... and for those of you who have a BM lid. How have you attached the MQ1 board? Just glued the four points to the inside of the helmet or some other fancy stuff? I´m guessing I should attach it before I paint that part of the lid?

    Re: ESB paintup!! KILLSTRIPES!!

More work done this evening. Finished up the right ear, only missing the final decal on it. And I got the killstripes on using Lucksy31´s stencil. I really liked how it turned out. Next up is the black in the cheeks, and the the mandibles and trim. Cheeks will be done tomorrow and then I´ll start on the trim and mandibles on saturday.

    Hope you like!

    Re: ESB paintup!! DONE!!

But I still have to add some more weathering and a clear cote though.

Also have to finish the right ear and some other stuff, steelwooling it etc. etc. But it´s more or less done though.

Hope you like, I know the red on the mandibles looks a bit popping, but the flash kinda weirds it out

    Re: ESB paintup!! DONE (almost)!!

i got some more done today. Mostly adding the black wash, which really made the helmet look 100 times better. Also added some of the brownish rust details and the black "smudging" on the left side.

I´m considering this paintjob done, I just have to do the white stripe on the right ear and seal this baby in with a clear cote.

Visor will be installed with screws this week, and the RF needs to thinned down a bit for it to fit. I´m not using the one that came with the helmet, I got one in aluminum from GBH, but as I said it´s to wide for the opening in the ear, so I have to find someone that can sand it down for me.

On to the pics! I hope you guys approve, you are my jury.

My baby is more or less ready for the last coat, I just have to add the spatter on the right side of the lid.

From the reference pics it´s hard to see if it´s dark orange or rust colored. Anyone have an idea?
