ESB GMH

So I figured out today that the little darker spots of paint are finger/hand prints from my son... will they show through every layer of paint? If so, how do I remove them without harming the paint job?

He wasn't present when the helmet was being painted, they were from before.

Okay starting over. Feeling a little better now. But a little disheartened at the same time because I feel like I messed up big time

Looking really nice!
I'm right now researching wich bucket to go for (first one!), and how to finish it when I finally get my hands on one. This kind of thread is really inspiring!

Thanks very much Cid and TF! I did the grey and beige yesterday and allowed it to cure overnight and will be applying the blue green mix shortly

Thank you superjedi!
Now I'm moving onto the dome and lower cheeks, although I am having trouble with the stencils and masking of damage on the dome. With it being a rounded surface I'm having trouble finding a reference point, mainly for the damage above the key slots. Also, in the PDF stencil file the damage above the keyslots is missing, I believe.

First of all: you are doing a great job!

Regarding the missing scratch: use the guidance for the stencils, usually called Helmet Perspective View (the last file in the first post of each of my stencil threads) to see where to draw each scratch, but also don't forget to double check these with images from the TDH Gallery. The scratch above the key slot IS there in the PDF file, so you should use that guidance file to locate a specific scratch and its placement.

Are the stencils fit well the GMH? Or you need to re-size/alter the stencils?

Thank you very much Raf, I'm very proud of how it has turned out so far.

I resized the stencils to about 95%, but then there is still just a little bit of moving around the helmet to get the placement correct. I played around with different scaling, 94, 95, 96 and 97. 95 fits the best. EDIT: The fit to page option sets it to 97%, which is a little oversized. Also using the back panels as an example, if you place the stencil in the top corner so it fits along the outer edge, the bottom curve around the neck of the helmet is not on the same... plane, for lack of a better word. Nothing you can't work around though.

As far as the stencils go, as you mentioned there's going to be some small amount
of shifting necessary to get everything to line up correctly.

Just think about how the shapes of the continents look on a flat Mercator-type map
of the world compared to their shapes on a globe.

Rafal has done an incredible job with his templates, but when you place them onto the
curved surface of the helmet, it's important to check against reference pics to get the
placement and proportions correct.

One thing I've done in the past is to actually measure a certain part of the helmet, say
one of the back panels, and make a plain paper template. I'll hold that piece of paper
up against my computer screen and compare it to Rafal's template. I'll use my graphics
program (I use PaintShop Pro) to resize Rafal's template until it matches. I have found that
it may be necessary to scale the vertical size and the horizontal size slightly differently to
make things fit. Like maybe scaling the horizontal to 97% versus scaling the vertical to 94%.
Something like that.

Granted, it's trickier to do this with the dome, but careful checking against the reference
pics will help with getting everything into the right position. :)

Does the new positioning look more correct? The old positioning is the unmasked silver. Mainly concerned about the dent scratch. I have not finished the grey 79 layer you see in the photos, I knocked over the jar of paint and am waiting on the replacement in the mail.anyways, that's why it looks all stripey and thin.

Just found out my compressor is dead. :|
Dunno where I'm gonna come up with the $xxx whatever its gonna cost for a new one right now.

Super miffed.

Looking good catbread! I got a tiny compressor from some airbrush site for cheap (like $150 or something). Works like a champ! Never had an issue with it not working or keeping up yet!

So I finally went out and got a compressor last night. Got home and hooked it up to get a feel for how it operated. Then for some random reason I felt I should play with my broken one one last time, so I plugged it in and out turned itself on. I was happy yet frustrated at the same time. Why did it refuse to work for so long?!
