    DVH Fett bucket scratch build

So ive decided to scratch build a Fett bucket, for a few reasons. 1 It seemed like a fun inexpensive project. 2 i want to do a custom mando after i finishmy ESB fett, without having to buy another bucket, and 3, if this comes out as good as im hoping, i can offer some for sale (or trade)to help me finance other costumes.
i have a bobamaker helmet which i just recently picked up from 7654321a, which will be my ESB fett helmet for trooping, and that will also serve as an excellent reference for size and angles and such.

So i started with the WOF templates and some heavyweight posterboard...heres where im at right now...

Once i get this shaped out for the most part, i will glass the inside to sturdy it up and then use bondo to smooth the seams and any imperfections, and also fine tune the details.

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Ok heres an update..then off to bed i go...will work on the dome tomorrow

I added some of the main detail with layers of posterboard. i also noticed itdidnt have that "swoop" tothe front if you look at itfrom theside....so i measured my bobamaker bucket and low and behold the sides and back were about 1/2" too long on this posterboard beauty. Not sure if that was me or the template sizing, but i marked off where i will trim it once i fiberglass the inside. theres a coat of primer on it just to get a feel for what it will look like.

    more tomorrow!

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

    heres an update:
I added the dome, which will need alot of adjusting to get it right

then i coated the inside with resin...and some bondo on the cheek areas for added strength:

then i glassed the entire inside, and trimmed off the bottom edge:

andhere it is now after applying bondo to most of the outside:

still lots of work to do!

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

ok i have some updates... i started building onto the dome...and itrimmed the upper part of the mandibles right above the cheekbone as it was a bit too tall.
    Soit then looked like this:

i then further refined the dome and noticed the cheekareas wereabit tooshort, soi attended to that as well.

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Then i sanded and put on someglazing spot putty

heres a couple more shots next to my BM helmet

and here it is as it is now...i shot a coat of primer to see where else this needs work. I still need to refine the dome a bit more in the rear portion, and attend to the ear areas, butother than that,i think this is coming along nicely

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Thanks guys! i guess doing autobody work in my younger years has finally helped me in this hobby lol.

I also have a BM helmet here to refer too which probably helps alot, big thanks to 987654321a for that helmet and to BM himself for making such an awesome helmet.

And while im here, another BIG HUGE thanks to WOF for the templates that served as the base for this. This was made alot easier with those templetes. A priceless asset to this forum!

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Heres my update for this weekend!

So looking at the helmet i noticed that the strip that goes all the way around separating the dome from the bottom half of the helmet, was a little tilted downward towards the back. So i decided to tackle that next...

I marked off with tape where it should be..

I then used the cutting wheelon my trusty dremel and trimmed it away.Since it was stillthe posterboard,it was easy to remove. the white strip is where the posterboard i removed was.

i then added on bondo to form the strip, carved ita bit with a box cutter blade before it was fully cured, and sanded it to shape. I also angled upward the bottom rear edge of the cheekbone area,as it was going straight outandit should have the angle like the bottom of the cheek. i alsoadded the triangle detail to the for head. i stillthink i wanna take down the front of the dome a little bit more though.

    next to my BM again

and heres a couple of just mine alone

Im hoping ill have the main helmet done by the end of next weekend. Everything will still need to be cleaned up and straightened out perfect before i even think about taking a mold from this. It is still a tad rough in spots. But once i fix all that, i will then make the keyslot area and the ears.

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Havent updated this in a bit...had another project going on..

ive now almost completed the left ear, and the rangefinder stalk Mounting area on the actual helmet. I also have started the lower right ear. I will be starting on the rangefinder this week as well. These should be done within the next couple of weeks, then i just need to do the keyslots on the back and then do final clean up. I will then post an interest thread in the cargohold.

Illpost pics of the ears this week, right now im too tired and lazy to upload them

I'm going to try my scratch build soon which will be a combo of the instructables template / the batter's helmet version/ and just-winging-it.

So cool to see it can be done, and done well.

That looks great DV! One thing I would point out... the inside corners of the visor look a tad too short. Once you cut out the visor, you can probably fix that. In any case, its looking fantastic!

Well its been a LONg time since i postedin this thread...this project has been on hold due to some financial constraints. But im hoping to have this done and in rubber by years end. I've sharpened up the lines a lot on this now, still working out the wavy brow to "unwavy"..and almost done with the ears. I have a bunch oif Vaders to finish and i have CV coming up, but once im back im hoping to continue on this and get it done!

The ears dont fit super perfect, but shouldnt be a problem. the rangefinder stalk ear cap fits pretty near perfect though. I also opened up the top of the "T" on the visor..it was a bit to narrow. Im almost up to the scary part....the dent!

haha! Well i sure cant touch that lid with a 20ft pole! lol! FP lids are the best! If i didnt get a nice deal on the painted BM i have,i would have gotten a FP. My painting is good i think,BUT im not so confident on the helmet painting yet. I painted all my gear except the helmet. I did however add more detail to the helmet after i got it. Im gonna practice painting on one of these castings (once i do that lol)and see how that goes.

    Re: SCRATCH BUILDING FETT BUCKET

Thanks..thats exactly the look i was going for! Still need to clean up the keyslots add the borden connector and tweak some lines on the back, but its mostly done! The ears, believe it or not, were made on thin wood i cut to size,(the rangefinder cap was a piece of ABS) and i just built up bondo on it and shaped it with a razor while it was still "puttylike" and just sanded it and carved with a dremel repeatedly till i got it right. those smears on them is spot filler i havent sanded yet..lol. Over all the whole helmet isnt 100% accurate, but its pretty close i think. im happy with it for now. Hoping i can offer some budget conscious people here on TDH another alternative to e-bay with this.

Hmm...yea those arrows are a little asymetrical arent they....ill fix that...

Thanks Paul! I was VERY nervous about doing the dent. I looked at pics of the GrantM helmet dent and based the shape off of that. Didnt quite come out as close to that as i wanted, but i thought it looked good so i just let it be rather than try and get it closer to that look and messin the whole thing up! LOL! PM replied bro!

I also have to say , even tho this is your buk and what comes out of the mold wont be the same colour id paint it in either a white or a light gray, puerly for asthetics now this is my own oppinion so dont take it as critisisim the red just looks too much like bondo ,and please dont take that the rong way

heh...yea i usually use grey primer...but the rust color primer is all i have around right now. I got if for free frommy job..so who am i to say no...right? Once i do the final adjustments ill probably paint it some other color to get the finish smooth, but honestly, what does it matter? once the mold is made this will go in my "master" storage closet never to be seen again! LOL!

Ok this is as far as i can get with this one. There is still a bit of poster board under all there, so i cant really do much more with this at this point. Cant sand past the posterboard. If i do a V2 of this, i can work it even more from a master casting.. Anyways, here it is:

Re: DVH Fett bucket scratch build

So here is the first assembled DVH Mando helmet. I say Mando as this one will be used for a custom (thats why the dent is filled). But i wanted to show you guys one built up. I had to do a bunch of modding to it though. the rangefinder "stop" was way to thich and made that part of the ear protrude too much. so i had to take a nice amount off of that. IOt still protrudes a little but not as bad. i aslo had to do a bunch of dremel sanding to get the ears to fit properly, nothing to crazy though, about 10min worth of work to get em to fit just right. I cast 2 fiberglass versions of this. One to "test" which is this one, and one to use as a new master for V2. So now that i see what i need to adjust, V2 will be in the works. It will probably be done by the summer id say. So without further adoo, here it is.

heck yea..i plan too! First im gonna take that "master" casting and mod it to match this one, then take a new mold. THEN ill be doing a couple of fetts for myself and possibly ill cast a few to sell if people are interested.
