DP 96 post your paint/mods

New Hunter
so i thought i had a crappy knock off, but turns out i have a Don Post 96, its just in rough shape, i bought it many years ago on clearance from a shop around halloween time frame. the visor was half gone, and it was really bent up. well last night i noticed that its a don post, so i was like WOW, thats cool, i used a heat gun, and re-shaped it, its as close to perfect as i think i can get it, removed the RF, and started sanding it for a more accurate paint job, but i really wanted to see what mods, and colors people have used on this specific bucket. post up a pic of your paint, and mods.

also is there a guide anywhere that shows how to make a hime made LED RF mod? i'm really cheap, and more of a hands on type of guy, and would love to tackle it in my garage.

so far i plan to paint it more accurate, (dont know what look i want just yet..)

also want to make a new visor
RF mod,
and it really needs a liner, or some really good padding inside.

i have also seen people put fans inside kinda like the storm trooper helms?
doesnt seem like that would work well in a fett bucket, but i could be wrong.

sorry if this has been posted, but ive only been lurking for a couple of days now.

I dont have a D.P 96 but if your happy with it then thats the main thing, And dont worrie if people dont replie to your posts it isnt personal

picked up the stuff for the visor mod minus the tint today, i have read that as long as you prime the helmet before you paint the paint will actually dry, and i have also read that it requires a special paint or it wont fully dry?? which is it? what kind/ brand should i use? i have seen some really amazing buckets, where the weathering is layered on, is that sprayed or brushed on?? it looks so real.

Here's my old DP96 I did up. It now belongs to another member. I bondo filled the letters in the back, cut out the visor, primed it with Krylon, then airbrushed the main colors and hand brushed the details. The visor I put in is a Bobamaker. I used foam for the interior. Hope this helps-

When your painting try to use the same brand paints, if u use difrent brands over each other they can react to gether causing the paint to buble or just not dry properly, Krylons have all the colours you migth be looking for and are a good quolity but what ever paint u use make shore the are good qwolity its not worht skimpin as it may cost u more in the end and for under coat most spray companys make a gray primer / under coat , use gray insded of white as the other colours will cover bettrer on gray then lite sand using 1000 grit wet dry abrasive paper (wet rub will give a better finish) then either paint the whole thing silver and use a liqued mask to create the weathering then paint the other colours acordingly but thats alot more dificult then going for the weathering once uv painted the base colours

Hi Wookieballa,
The very first Boba helmet I ever worked on (waaaaaay back when) was a DP. I didn't prime it or anything, and used Krylon and Rustoleum colors, and they stayed slightly tacky until I put a clearcoat over them. Something about the vinyl material the helmet is made from.
So I'd definitely recommend using a primer first and a matte finish clearcoat once you're done painting.

I've also read about some other peoples' DP mods and because the material is softer, they've described how to add a metal ring around the bottom to help it hold its shape. You can do a search to find info like that.
As far as adding fans and stuff, the DP is a little undersized compared to a "movie-sized helmet" so not sure how tight a fit it would be with extra stuff installed.

cool, thanks for the suggestions! so far i have cut out the visor from the mask, made the pattern for the new visor, but havent cut it out just yet. i did prime it, but i used the ruddy brown, and i dont liek how it turned out, i will probably grab a can of gray this week and re-spray. i like the idea for the weathering, so i'm going to play with that and see how it turns out.

wookieballa: I have a DP96 as well, but unfortunately, I am in no position to do any mod / repair work to it! I have Jeremy Bulloch and mc chris' signatures on the dome, and I fear damage to those if I began work repairing it.

However, I'm sure other TDH'ers besides those who have posted already can help you, if you keep us informed of the progress. Good luck!
