Don Post '95 Helm

Ive been lurking for a few days now, soaking in the great knowledge here, and finally decided I needed to mingle with you all =) I have decided that i'm going to repaint my 1995 Don Post Helm. The paint currently on it always seems "tacky, sticky" Like it wasn't properly painted to begin with.

If this goes well, armor will follow =)

Has anyone attempted a complete repaint of a Don Post helm? And if so, what was the easiest way to get the paint off besides the obvious sanding that i'll have to do?
