Daring modification to my BobaMaker helmet

So, i'm actually going to make a daring modification to my Bobamaker bucket.....

I'm planning on adding the metal GMH ears to it. (yes, the BM ears are cast in)

My plan is to build up the indentation on the inside where the ears are cast in with some FG resin, and fiberglass. then i can carefully grind down the ears from the outside with the sanding drum attachment on the Dremel, then smooth it out with a sanding block. I'll even be able to leave that little lip to attach the ears too. I shouldnt have to repaint the whole helmet either. I tested the fit with resin GMH ears and they are almost perfect. so im very confident i can get the metal GMH ears on my bobamaker helmet

Crazy?...maybe, but i think i can do it. Worst case, ill have to repaint more of the helmet than expected. :)

On another note....I bought a set of resin GMH ears from a member to actually see how close my scratch build was to be able to fit them. Turns out its off by very little, so my 3rd tooling of my helmet will be able to fit the GMH ears, meaning you can get Mojo's metal ones and they will fit the DVH helmet...just throwin that out there :p

I must ask why its not an ROTJ helmet...theres very small amounts a metal that show...I dont think it would be worth the hassle honestly.

True, but the real ears are in fact metal. And the little that does show doesnt match all the rest of the real metal on the helmet. i also like the added weight and crispness of the aluminum ears. Personal prefference. If i had a GMH helemt id do the same. I like the shape of the BM helemt better though for ESB. I honestly dont think it will be that much trouble. its a pretty simple mod really.

Why do you take this apart now? I'm trying to get us out of here and you pull both of these...

Put them back together right now.

lol..i hope not! This method of doing this seems pretty straight forward, and it was after much thought about it. My original though was cut the old ears out, but i just saw that as turning into a disaster and way to risky.

Once i get the ears, i will definitely post lots of pics! I know they are in production now, so hopefully it wont be too much longer :)

So is it a good thing or a bad thing we haven't got any updates?!? I hope it's still in one piece!!

Haha yes still in one piece...waiting to get the ears from mojo before i start...i will post progress :) Still debating whether i want to do an entire overhaul and repaint the helmet completely. Although its nice im not 100% happy with the green used and the finish is a bit too shiney for my taste. Also some of the details are missing. Would like to use humbrol paints.

Ah that's good! Wow really?! Maybe he has improved over the years? His paint jobs always look quite nice in photos.... Have to agree with the humbrol paints! They really make it look so much more authentic, they've helped mine, that's for sure! :)

I wasnt speaking of BobaMaker. His paintupos are great. The member 987654321a painted the helmet back in 2009 when i got it. I havent touched it for the most part. i am a big fan of Terminal fettlers paint-ups and like the Humbrol color palette he uses...sans a few floquil swaps. I just dunno if i have the faith in myself yet painting a helmet to repaint this one. I have my scratchbuild casting i was going to paint first and see how i do. But we'll see, mebbe i'll grow a pair and go for it LOL

I'm doing the same thing with my dp '95 and some cold cast ears from Asok. Filled in the inside of the ears with some bondo today and spent the rest of the day cleaning up the ears and putting in some magnets to the hold the right ear cap and base on, want to keep going but it's snowing and the garage is getting way too cold for delicate work. :( Everything is working out really well so far though and it's not too difficult. The only tough part is getting flat surfaces and nice sharp angles. I'm sure you'll do a fine job though!
