Child Sized Fett Helmet - UPDATE 11/06/09

    Edit:
Since I no longer offer my wares on this forum, arrangements are in the works for Cruiser to take possession of this entire project. Sorry the pics no longer work, as this is a very old thread, but maybe Cruiser, or anyone else with one of these helmets, might post a pic.
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here's what I got so far - very rough. This started out the weekend as a toy army helmet. Saturday, I pulled a quick plaster mold of the dome, and fiberglassed it while it was still warm. Then formed aluminum around it in a flared tube shape, and glassed that. Sunday, I measured, marked, and began the cheeks. Next weekend, I'll probably finish roughing it out, and work on detailing it(band, vents, etc.). When that's done, it'll get sprayed with gelcoat to seal it, then wet-sanded and molded. I'll do the ears and rangefinder once I have a first pull.

I'm guessing it's between 2/3 and 3/4 size of my helmet. Mine's about the size of a DP '95. It still has a ways to go, but you can get an idea of the size. Ignore the t-visor drawn on. it was more for checking symetry at this point. It will have much more squint when it's finalized.

I can add a dent, by using a piece of clay in the mold, if someone wanted to make it into a (heaven forbid )Boba helmet.

Finally... the perfect helmet for Mirax!!

If its geared more for kids as you say, you might want to leave the visor big for safer visibility.

WPK, I'm surprised you had no comment on my Boba jab.

The visor squint will be more accurate in shape and size, than pictured, BUT can be trimmed larger if a concerned parent wishes, since this will have a back-mounted visor. Thanks for all the encouregement guys and gals. In these times when everyone's looking for bigger buckets, ole JD goes and makes a smaller one.

Thanks everyone, but it's still got a ways to go. Keep checking this thread for updates. When it's done, I'll offer kits of this helmet. I don't have a price yet, because I don't have a full idea of what's involved in running these, until I get the first pull. As always, I'm interested in trades for stuff I don't have yet.

I started the thread here, because I figured you Boba fanatics might be interested in a dented versin of this for your little ones. Oh well, I guess not. I guess Jangos love their little ones more than Bobas do.

The model is nearly finished. Watch for new pics later today.

Sorry, but the update will have to wait - real life situations come first. Let me just say that I only have one more detail to finish before this thing is sealed. When that's done, I'll post the pics.

Re: Child Sized Fett Helmet - PICS !

Alas, the long overdue update! The helmet and earpiece models are almost done. I just need to do a little tweeking here and there. The earpieces are seperate, just taped on for referance. This is about 3/4 scale of the one on the right.

I still need to make the rangefinder. The main helmet mold will bolt together in three sections: front, back, and dome. Once the mold is finished, before I remove it from the model, I will remove the dome section of the mold and put the dent into the model. Then, I will run a mold of the dented dome. The mold will now have two seperate, interchangable dome sections. By switching from one to the other, I can run dented or undented helmets from the same mold.

    Hear, hear.

The only thing my little guy woud like more is maybe a full Power Ranger bucket. I have a some sintra just lying around and a few woefully small armor pieces that would make a great base for a kids suit.

    Any more progress pics?

I didn't get to mold it last weekend, because I hosted a workshop on fiberglass molding and casting basics. I didn't even try to tackle any of my own work, in order to be available for assistance. Hopefully next weekend will bring closure to the development stage of this project.

I finished the un-dented helmet mold today. I'm letting it cure overnight, and pulling the dome section off in the morning. Then I'll add the dent, and pull that dome section. Watch for an update Sunday afternoon.

I got my child sized helmet in the mail today. People... if you have a little one and were on the fence about this helmet, I have one thing to say. GET THIS HELMET! Outstanding, high quality job at a very reasonable price. Judz Dwedd, my son is going to love this! (end of commercial)

PS...I'll see if I can post pics when I get it painted

Got the helmet and I have to say, it looks great! On the down side, it's too small for my daughter. She's 10 and about 4'5". However, it will be perfect for my nephew. He's 4 and I know he will love it. Thanks JD!

Can't believe I missed this thread! Wow, that's a very cool smaller helmet for the kids. Most impressive.

What about skinny little me? I know some people that can't even fit a DP '95 over their noggins, and I had to pad both sides of the inside of mine to have it hold my head.

Re: Child Sized Fett Helmet - MOLDS FINISHED ! !

I never imagined that this would be such a populated thread. I origionally thought two people wanted this done, and look what happened. I think these turned out better than my regular jango helmet. (second time's a charm ) Best of all, they're in the same $$ range as a rubies, but gelcoated fiberglass, and a chrome plated steel rf stalk. The rf is designed to be permanantly in the upright position, for child safety reasons. Delivery time on these is about a week. Any questions, pm me.

It's nice to see that I'm not the only one who is passing on my Fandom as well as "Geekdom" (in my wife's loving opinion) to my son.

    Great work on the helmet!

I must say, you certianly turned it into a work of art. A few others have finished these little buckets very nice also, both as Boba, and Jango. Perhaps they would like to display them again, here in this thread.

Here is a comparison between my mystery helmet and my son's JD helmet. I have to admit that I didn't spend as much time and effort into the small helmet's paint job as I did my own...I'm a horrible father!

Awesome job guys! Can't wait to get mine and do them up. My son is going to be ecstatic when he finds out I got him his own "real" helmet.

Judge Dwedd, I would love to buy one of these as well if you're selling unpainted pulls! After a year's worth of work, my son's Fett costume is almost finished, but the DP helmet is simply too big and throws off the scaling of the entire costume. Plus, he can barely lift his shoulders without hitting the helmet, so he looks like a bobble head. If we wait too long, he's going to grow into the helmet and outgrow the rest of the costume before he ever gets to wear it, and I think we've put way too much time and effort into this costume to stop now. If you can sell us one, you'll make his Halloween!

Hey there's actually someone else out there
doing this. Here's a pic of my son (Anakin)in his kid sized Boba, & I (as Jango) posing at a SW DVD release event. I think
the father/son thing works. It took about a month from initial construction to final paint job but It turned out decent.
