If your goal is not necessary to be screen accurate, then you can go with foam (which in some cases is screen accurate). I padded my WOF helmet with an used pair of jeans posted here Helmet Padding And T-visor Mount.
For my first helmet I just went to home depot and bought a hard hat with a removable liner and it worked great.
For a helmet I made years ago I went to a $2 store and got a foam kick board (for learning to swim) and cut a few strips out and glued them in to the helmet and they worked great
You could definitely go with foam and a spray adhesive. Cheap and very effective. I love Rafal's used denim idea! I should raid my wife's underwear drawer and have me some frilly padding!![]()
