    Charlie's Fett Helmet

My Sgt Fang arrived today. I spent about 4 hours dremelling and sanding. I won't post pictures, since I'm sure there are enough of those floating around. *grin* I'll update with some pics when I start the final snading and painting.

    Cool.
Did you look like a slightly off-white snowman when you got done???
I've worked on a couple of Fang helmets and the resin dust gets crazy.

I was wearing a black Tshirt with a white imperial cog. By the time I was done, you couldn't see the cog.

    Re: Charlie's Fett Helmet

Ok, here's an update. I orginally sanded and primered the helmet. I then put on a coat of Rustolem Chrome.

It sucked. It ran and bled and looked like ****. I then decided to sand it back down. This was not working; my mom (God bless mothers!) suggested paint thinner. I figured why not? The helmet came out like this:

Now, imagine if that resin underneath was silver. And the rest of the colours were what they were supposed to be. Looks like GREAT layered weathering to me. So, I need to find a metallic color that would a> go on well b> be resistant to the paint thinner and c> still look metallic.

Enter Rustoleum Metallic Silver paint. It's actual metal chips (somehow, don't ask me) and when I clear coat it with my super strength clear coat, it STILL LOOKS METAL! (wohoo!). My plan now is to use the metallic silver to coat the helmet (done):

The clear coat will be applied and then allowed to dry for several days. (I have already done tests with the silver paint and the clearcoat; the clearcoat will take the next layers of paint with no problem). Once the next layers are on, I'm going to use the thinner to "weather" out the helmet. More pics to follow next week!

I did my test samples today; I ended up having to use a combo of paint thinner and 400 grit sandpaper, but I'm pleased with the results. The helmet has been clearcoated and reprimed (for the grey bits on the helmet). Tomorrow I should be able to get at least two of the main helmet colours on. I'll post pics of that part when I get it finished.

What about adding the points to the cheeks instead of the fillet edge?

I thought about that. I did some research on the screen shots from the movie plus several helmets by different people. At glance, I don't think anyone would notice. On a close inspection, well, I like the rounded look more. So I'm going to stick with that. It also saves me from making one mistake too many while trying to sand it out.

    Re: Charlie's Fett Helmet

Ok, I finished all the colored painting.

Then using paint thinner, rags and 400 grit sandpaper, I started the weathering. The lighting was not too good, but you'll get the idea.

I finished with a wetsand of 600 grit. I wanted to make the dent all silver, but I was starting to get through the silver so I backed off. As a note, this is not meant to be a complete copy of the movie damage; it was more a Fett feel due to the nature of taking off the paint. I've still got to add the decals and the visor. What do you guys think?

    BOBA FETT: DAY EIGHT

Well, this is what I started with:

And this is what I have:

I still have to do the interior, mounting the padding but I don't think that will be any harder than doing it for my TIE.

I couldn't have gotten this project off the ground without a lot of help from everyone here at TDH, with everything from parts to decals to help & advice. I would like to especially thank Superjedi, whose Sgt Fang tutorial was printed beside me through the weathering process, even if I did it completely differently *grin*, Scott from Delucks, who saved me a lot of heartache trying to paint straight lines, BKBT for the RF stalk, Sgt Fang for making the damn thing to begin with, and SL-4821. Bill's not a member of the TDH, but he's my local Vader, and the one person who convinced me it was finally time to start on Boba Fett.

If you want to see a whole bunch of photos from beginning to end, go to

and all my progress pics are there.

    Thanks everyone!
