CAST ALUMINUM FETT (phase 2) - w/ comparisons

Here it is - my scratch sculpted Fett helmet is cast in aluminum!

After my first try with the DP delux casting I decided to improve my techniques. I'm quite proud of this especially because I actually sculpted the master helmet. I was able to make the walls very thin so the helmet is very light and wearable! It weighed in at 5lbs but it doesn't seem like it. I guess that would be because the helmet is quite large but the metal is evenly distributed making it more comfortable on the head than one might think.

Pics show progress of the clean up. The surface is really smooth and straight - although it looks like it has wrinkles and dirt. Next step is to "flap" it and wire wheel it for that oh-so-smooth surface.

So... here are the pics - ask me what you want to know...

Man, people making metal helmets, metal armor . . . . just need someone to start making small flamethrowers and you could actually BE a real Boba Fett bounty hunter!

Great work on the helmet. Looks incredible!

Thank you for all the wonderful compliments! :o

I'll be cleaning it up more soon and sharing new pictures as well. In regards to the garage blast furnace...no. I actually work at a commercial art foundry where we specialize in individual castings and what not (but yeah - as if I would cast just "one"). I just completed a new thread on the process of casting in aluminum. Here it is:

Here are some progress pics. The rangefinder stands on its own. A screw is holding the ear cover in place. Also you can see the thickness of the metal in the 'inside' shot. Because Boba is painted I decided not to 'polish' the helmet up and leave it a bit textures so the paint sticks better.

    Looking good Brian.

I must say, I have had the privlage of trying on Brians AlumiFett. I have a hard time fitting on the Don Posts, His helmet fit great. It looks great wearing it too. I think he nailed the size perfectly. It is not a great deal larger than the Don Posts, but certainly noticable.

All I can say is... Anybody want to buy a Don Post 97 helmet?

    Anyway, great job Brian.

    Thank you...

I'm not sure about the size... the mystery helmet is a mystery to me - never held one etc. but I can only imagine that it would be bigger because it's a pretty hefty piece of work. I could be wrong though...

My personal costs are pretty high - it's a labor of love.

Of course! Guantlets too (in time) I will custom make the armor to fit me. It's sort of in process.

heat? I don't quite understand. Does it get hot to wear? I don't know - never wore it outside for any leangth of time.

I think everybody should have a Hand-Schaub. For those of you confused - I was TK-581 - but that being a Stormtrooper designation and this being a bounty hunter forum - I thought Hand-Schaub was a more appropriate name. I can be found on the RPF as tk-581 though.

Wow - didn't realize this old thread would still get noticed. I assume this is due to some older members being quiet and new members emerging.

There is a thread on casting the helmet... let's see if I can dig it up.

In the mean time - for your viewing pleasure, here is a shot of the completed suit with helmet. (all armor components are aluminum) The car is stainless steel (don't confuse the two)
Sorry for those of you who have seen this shot a few times already:

Okay.. I get the car and the armor.. but I think a dire question needs to be answered here.. Where's the scantily-clad hottie on the hood of the car?

Seriously though.. nicely done, man. I agree with the above posts - you would, and could, make a lot of cash from those who want that armor. Then again, something extremely pleasing about owning something (personally created) that's unique. Again, nicely done man.

Thanks again everybody. There are a few of these helmets hovering around. The only Boba I know is Chrima. He's a big guy so he requires a big helmet with a bit extra flair. His armor is styrene but also a custom sculpt.

The price of metal and my current school involvement would make it next to impossible to make any of these in the near future. The require a great deal of work in the wax and metal and I do ALL that myself so each helmet takes a loooong time. I would love to make some more again but I would need a decent order size to do so. I have no plans on leaving the hobby so stay tuned...

Here is a pic from Comic Con 2004 of my ROTJ Fett. The Chest Armor and Bucket made by Brian, painted by me.

Knee armor I did myself. Same with most everything else.

If you had paid more attention you would saw that this thread was created in 2002 and the last post was 6 years ago... This is what is called necro-posting (posting on old or dead threads). It would be easier to PM Hand-Schaub for the details.

And if you had not assumed that everyone is as dense as yourself, you might have said hello and welcome to the boards. Then you might have asked if I had tried to send a message. I would have said thanks, and let you know that I had already done that with no reply, and therefore posted to this old thread to see if others might be so kind with some info and direction with this bucket.

Thank you for your quick assumption and sarcasm. Do overs are welcome. Thanks to those with a helpful soul.

    Ouch.

    I hate to see this.

Just today alone, i directed 6 individuals to TheDentedHelmet.com.

I told them it's the ultimate resource for all things Boba, and one
of the friendliest communities in existence.

Lets try to show a little more hospitality folks. It's stuff like this
that's taking us farther and farther away from our roots. This
is NOT how we want to be. It's a sure fire way to get the doors closed
here from lack of interest with rude welcomes. Remember, what
keeps this place in existence, are stats and numbers.

Boba86Solo - My apologies. In answer to your question, Brian has been
away from these boards for years. He no longer makes these items
because as I recall, he doesn't work for a foundry anymore. If you want
to get in contact with him, I believe there are a few individuals here
in the administration that know how to contact him. Perhaps Art Andrews.
That is also his board name. I hope this helps.

    And Welcome to TDH

    Chris

I think you are with a wrong impression about the tonality I used in my post. I think it were Ok if you just posted in your first post the same thing that is in my quote instead of complaining.

And by the way, Welcome to TDH!

    Chris,

Thank you very much for the welcome. I have been on other boards before and when someone new shows up it is easy to criticize their lack of operational knowledge. I don't fault anyone as it's an easy path. That is why I offered the do-over. Sometimes we don't realized what we are doing till it's done. Thank you very much for the information. I'm in the market for an aluminum cast Fett, and if anyone has guidance that is great. Glad to be here as I've been a Boba fan since I first got my non-rocket firing one in the mail.

Boba86Solo....Being that I troop in north Texas where you, are let me say.....You probably do not want an aluminum helmet.

If you want the appearance of metal look at the Asok/FP Cold Cast Boba Helmet. It is an excellent helmet from exceptional makers, and you will survive trooping in it. Cold Cast looks like metal once it is sanded and polished. I did the Plano Independence day parade in an Asok Jango and while it was hot it was manageable.

Welcome to TDH. I may actually meet you in person someday at a troop.

P.S. also remeber some of the guys posting here speak other languages and the wording sometimes comes across wrong to us Texans.

Re: CAST ALUMINUM FETT (phase 2) - w/ comparisons

Hey, you guys have great advice. Thanks for letting me know about the trooping drawbacks. I have been reading alot here before posting. Currently I have one already for trooping when needed. The aluminum is more for my game room. I'm wanting to make it a nice custom display piece out of the aluminum cast.

Are many people making these anymore, or is it due to the trooping drawbacks that no one sees a market for these?

Don Post?!?! Really? I guess that was all he had at the time. Ok, maybe I will not be looking for one of those. I saw an aluminum cast at CV and it was done nicely. I wish I had gotten more info from the guy. Who knows... It was so freakin hot, maybe I was not thinking straight.

The HS cast aluminum helmets look good all finished up. Not the most accurate by todays standards, but not terrible by any stretch.

Here are the pics of mine (I no longer have it -- too heavy to wear)

    Stormtrooperguy.com - HS Aluminum Helmet

I don't think it's Don Post based. It's WAY too big for that! I'm 5' 9"... a Mystery Helmet type bucket fits me really well. Here's my HS:
