Cardboard Scratchbuild

Greetings!

Just thought I'd share my current progress with my bucket that I've been messing with on and off for several months. I remember there used to a whole lot more scratcbuild threads back in the previous years when I used to lurk on occasion. But it does seem that perhaps some users still like to see the homemade stuff, so I'll go ahead and show a little of what I've gotten done. For the most part, I think I'm going to keep it the way it is once I add on the ears, but I may still add some adjustments and finishing touches before I seal it.

All done using WOF's templates along with most of Antman's recommendations and my own modifications. I even scaled the T-visor back a little at the ends to how it looks to me. Also, props to Rafal for supplementing a few of the extra details--especially the dent!

My first attempt at a bucket was a scratch build similar to yours. The big difference with mine, though, is that it sucked. Yours looks great! Keep up the good work!

It could be mistaken for a resin cast with a surface like that! Awesome work dude.

You know, I am actually hoping to use this for molding and casting when it's ready, so hopefully it'll look the same once I finally make that pull.

Thanks for all the compliments everyone! I'm glad you guys like it. I'll post more pics here soon as my ear pieces are nearly done. We'll see how legit it looks once I get them on!

Finally finished up with the ears. They look a little big to me compared to pics I've seen on other helmets like the ones done by FP, but it could be that I'm just not used to them; I don't really know how proportional they should look. Still, I think the ears will work out well enough...at least for me. I also haven't filled them in yet, so pardon the lack of seams that'll be present once it's all done. In any case, it's finally starting to shape up now!

Nice build!

I did some measurements using reference images from the Gallery and I got confirmation that these are very close to the real helmets (I based my helmet templates on these measurements):

Note that the killstripe measurement is ESB specific.

I hope these files help you!

Thanks, Rafal. Yeah, after comparing the measurements the ears are about a few millimeters larger than your files. Mine are from WOF's files, and while I do they think make for very great Fett templates in every way, the ears just seem a little wide to me. And to be honest, I had already started on this scratchbuild before you had completed your Rafal Works files a while back with your own measurements...but they have made me more aware of what to look for. So thanks for that!

I'll post more pics once this build is done and I have the whole thing sealed. Hopefully it'll look a little better on camera, too!

For anyone still interested, this is an update of my current progress. I applied a layer of polyacrylic sealer all over, so the difference may not be very obvious compared to prior pics, but this is what I plan on using for what will hopefully be a successful mold. I say the main helmet is just about complete...may put on one more thin layer of sealer all around and do some light sanding to even out the texture. Overall, I feel pretty good about it. I realized the keyslot grill might be slightly off center IMO, but I think for the most part it all works out--I'm curious to see what kind of cast I can pull from this. Depending on how it goes, I might create another thread if I feel it's worthy enough. Enjoy!
