Bucket Painting TEMPLATES

I went down this road for my bucket- I created my own templates but they were very tedious and time consuming -- this includes tracing them out of the screen used bucket image in photoshop, morphing the proportions right for the printout to fit on the physical helmet, then the tedious xacto work of doing the cutouts. Now, if I could get them printed or photoeched out onto a THIN aluminum sheet or something they would be generally reusable. As it stands all the work isn't that reusable. and thats just for the generally flat surfaces. maybe if they were printed on thin plastic or something. Hmmmm... In any case, I created them for my helmet only, so reproduction needed.

I eventually got impatient and started working by hand and was pleased with the results. Anyway, here is how the front mandible (the red parts) looked before I fixed the proportions, reworked the actual details and printed them out-

ps- I used the photos of the real deal- not a copy. Thanks Braks Buddy!!!

Dude if you are looking for a template I've seen your results- just awsome. I wouldn't change a thing about the way you are doing things! :cheers Hopefully that's what ";)" means....

no..no meaning behind it....I seriously just want to try something different to see the results....:)
Again I don't think there is any right or wrong way to paint these buckets.(y)

Oh come on, there is a right way... but it requires gravity boots, a convertable car, and 5 beautiful women. Few know of this secret style of painting! :)

hi guys,

not logged for a long while and noticed this thread.

I now a way of making these templates and producing them in a pdf format going to be time comsuming but i can see a way of doing this.

but the main question is once the templates have been made the scale factor is the main concern i have. doing the templates is the easy part but getting the scale correct will be hard due to the number of different fan made helmets that members have.

I'll try a sample this week and post my results, these can be very detailed if required.

It can but that attention to placement has to happen nomatter what. If you would rather I do the grunt work of converting the peices PDF and host them I can. I am a graphic designer by trade.

WOW, it's been A LOOOOOOOONG TIME since I posted anything here on TDH, apperantly such a long time that I had to register again.

Well anyway, I was quite shocked when I first saw this thread, I just couldn't believe that something like this actually uppset people!? How on earth could someone get blamed for using templates (that's been around the model building world for AGES) without sharing them!!!??? Creating templates (when you do the masters) is actually a tremendiously time consuming job! Why should anybody have to feel bad for not sharing them? I'm also quite surprised to see that people actually think that ones they have accurate templates they would be able to make a great looking bucket. To me that's actually a rather big smack in the face for everyone that has taken their time to make a Fett helmet, with or without templates (the one I did for Jez was done topicaly by hand BTW, just in case someone thought otherwise).

The key to paint a nice looking Fett helmet is the use of several different techniques combined. The scratches are just one detail of many other. If you just used "scratch templates" and stoped at that you would get a helmet looking exactly like the current MR proto. Templates won't guide your washes, neither will the help out with color tones, airbrush misting, splatering and so on.

I for one are all for sharing. Hell, if wasn't for Braks, putting out all he's ref pics for all to see I for one wouldn't even know where to begin when I did Jez's helmet. Same goes for Lee with he's colors and so on. I'm sure the list could be long but the bottom line is that they chose to share, they weren't made.

After all, everything that's given out are tools, nothing more. In the end it's up to the person painting the helmet how the result are going to turn out. I guess what I'm trying to say is that if you're a lousy painter no templates in the world's gonna give you a Fett helmet that would look anything near the one we all love....Make no misstake!

Now who do I have to sleep with in order to get my hands on those templates!:love Just kiddin'

Steve.

Steve,
I just have to say that the pics of your helmet on Jez's website were the ones that inspired me to do my own helmet.
I drooled over those pics for months before I got up the courage to try it myself.
You're truly a gifted artist!!
Eric

Steve, you are an exception to any rule my friend. You are by far the artist who inspired me (along with FP in the "day") and went as far as create the first detailed tutorial on HOW it was done. It has been a long time since you posted here but since we got you here, I just wanted to thank you publicly.

slave1,

GREAT WORK my friend. What are the chanceds to get these onto some sort of peal away lamination or even a decal set where we could wet it, apply, paint, rewet and remove ?

WOW!!!.....  .....
I feel like we've been graced with Royalty(y) (y) (y) ....

As Got Maul stated ....you still have the ULTIMATE Tutorial and it's still the standard.

As well since you're here:
Can you tell us a little about how you painted that AWSOME ESB Bucket.??I mean your tutorial is pretty self explanatory but is there any step that you would change the order and or techniques you would do differently??
Thanks for sharing.

Alex.

I'm with Eric.. All I ever wanted was a Tk suit, but Steve's Fett helmet was the deciding factor on how I ended up here.. (and have been happy doing so ever since :) ) It's HIS fault that I am now so Fett obsessed though.. :p

I'm just thrilled that as many people have shared as much as they have.. I've learned so much since I first came here..

So who's gonna make the 'Step by step: Fett helmet painting' DVD? (with bonus template collectors edition) I'm in..

Matt
