    Bucket Help

    Hello everyone.

My buddy and I picked up two mystery helmets off ebay, they seem to be FP's. Excellent helmets, but they need some work of course. What would you guys recommend to use as filler? I've worked with bondo before, many many years ago. I've also used the putty that comes in a tube that bondo makes, but I wasn't a fan. I don't think that stuff cures right, or maybe I just got a bad batch. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

The "red stuff" is just spot filler to smooth out areas with grooves or pin holes. It will not have the strength of a cured body filler.

My guess is that you bought one of the knock off FP molds that people stole and sell on E-Bay. If the thickness of the helmet is uneven and the work needs to be fixed, then that sounds about right. If you are fixing the inside of the helmet, you could use fiber glass resin to strengthen it. If you are having to smooth the outside, use body filler.

Should have checked here before buying a "mystery bucket" though. I personally wish you had not supported someone who stole someone else's work, but lets not start up the debate of who stole what first.

I don't know if its a recast or not. The bucket is very well made, only bubble pockets that need to be filled. I bought a mystery bucket years ago, and it was a mess compared to what this is. My buddy bought both the helmets while we were at a bar having a few drinks. It was an impulse buy for him I guess. I am surprised he went through ebay seeing as how he was one of the first people to buy from manofwar.

Anyways, thanks for the info on the red stuff. Ill have to pick me up some bondo and play around with it before I do work on the helmets.

There are some pretty solid videos on bondo prop work on YouTube.

You might find those pretty helpful. I have found that I have better results when I do not mix my batches very hot. It gives me more time to smooth the surface and requires less sanding in the long run.
