    BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP/**PIC INTENSE**

well, it finally got here...my brand new Bobamaker helmet...and i thought his armor was friggin' sweet!!! :thumbup this helmet rocks, and i just hope i can do the paintup justice...for the record, i commissioned Daz to do the main base colors, along with the back panel damage, minus the silver...he also did the killstripes as well...thanks Daz!!

just a plug for Bobamaker, guys...my helmet was due to be done at the end of February beginning of march...due to his injury, he had to push back the completion date...however, he kept in touch with me, gave me updates, and got my helmet to me in tip top shape...i cant begin to explain the professionalism, dedication, and quality of work this man runs his business by...he is top notch, and everything he produces is worth every penny spent...YOU ROCK DAZ!!

anyways, here are some pics of what i found in that box on my doorstep from the UK...i will post progress of the paint up i have left to do on it...

Its a shame this lid went from artist to a "Paint by numbers" Fingerpaints guy.

    Re: BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP

It is a fun process of sizing the templates I would be curious what you have come up with as I am going through the same process myself. For the left ear cap I found that scaling the width to 582 pixels and the hight to 685 pixels, removing constraints and printing at fit on page seemed to work. Hope this helps some. Also for the graphite paper I would get boty black and white.

Didn't you paint other lids before? If so do you still have paint left over for sale? I am insanely jealous of the work D and I want to kick out my BM lid too.

yes, progress is good! i have worked some more on the keyslots and back bands some this weekend... been putting down the Lark Dark Grey (which in my opinion is way better than the reefer grey) with the chrome silver and got some more grey to put down behind the ear, can see some of the caboose showing thru, but pleased so far with my spacing on the damage...

more progress pics! i have completed the keyslots, and the head band to behind the right ear...i am using the stencils from Dookie, sized at 82%, and a ruler to measure where the main damage areas are, to get the correct spacing...i am not actually transfering the images, found it easier for me this way...i do the silver first, then the SP Lark Dark grey, and go in and finish up with the maroon...i have begun the silver work on the left side of the band as well...

Well if that is the case what an utter piece of c**p you have going there!!! I would seriously consider starting over and let someone who knows what they are doing paint it. At least then it would turn out right.

    Re: BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP

ivan, ivan, ivan.... well, some more progress on the back bands...i have the whole right side done, and mostly the silver and dark grey done to the left side behind the left ear...still working on the maroon to the left... anyone else have a 5 year old that demands 24-7 attention...sheesh!! would have alot more done, but very busy being the end of school and all... progress will pick up...promise...

now, is it just me, or do you have to put quite a bit of paint on for the maroon? seems like it isnt dark enough, so i have to go over it quite a bit to get it dark enough, and even then, i wonder if it is still not dark enough...i know that when i clean the brush out, it has some thinner still in it, and that may make it lighter, but still....any input?

When I use the PRR Maroon, I use 2 coats. I don't know why that particular color seems to be thinner in consistency than other Polly S. paints, but pretty much all the other colors are OK with one coat.

Darrell, have a look at Terminal Fettlers paintjobs ... the color he uses is correct and only needs one layer.

    :-)

I used it too and it´s perfect.

BTW: Great job so far bro!

ok, been getting some more done on my lid... got the left ear completed this weekend, and wanted to share with you guys some more pics...thanks everyone for the input and advice on the paints...much appreciated!! i did the white arch detail by hand, got the stencil to the size i wanted, then used a very sharp hobby knife and cut along the edges...popped it out (not pooped, Dave... ) and then traced on the damage...whatcha think? i still need to find the rub on lettering that superjedi uses for the black detail there...anyone got any hints on where i could find them? thanks for looking fellas...

    Re: BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP

Your white arch came out really smooth! Nice work.
The transfer lettering I use is made by Woodland Scenics. They're made for model railroads, so if there's a hobby shop that carries railroad stuff that would be your best bet.
I've never actually looked to see if they have a website.

EDIT: They do have a website. Here's the page with the dry transfer letters:
    http://woodlandscenics.woodlandsceni...cs?StartRow=21

The set I use is called MG737 - Condensed Gothic RR Black .
    Hope that's useful!

well, with the left earcap done, i have moved up to the killstripes (procrastinating with the mandys...) got the silver spots done except for the long scratch that comes from the first stripe...need to put the dark grey spot down there first... i have opted to not do the crack detail, since its not in the screen version... next will be to attempt a darker grey for the grey areas as per superjedi's method...

some pics of the work i have done on the Dent! last time on my mystery lid i got that area with way too much damage... so this time, after finding the templates in Dookie's stencil thread, i printed them off, and then cut out the dent part of the page...i lined up the dent with the corresponding sides, and then lightly traced with pencil the main damage areas to get an idea of how much damage should be there, and to get the correct direction the damage goes as well...kind of tricky angles to deal with... much better this time around... in the third pic, you can also see that i have traced out the "swoosh" area behind the dent donig the same thing to get the somewhat correct direction and size...i have yet to get to that area, and will do the silver first and then come back with the sp lark dark grey...i am still debating on whether to darken the lark grey with black, or go straight up with that color...i know superjedi darkens it, has anyone left the lark grey alone to the top of the dome? thanks guys!

I know that Dave used the SP dark lark grey right out of the bottle. I ended up using some grimey black to darken it.

pleased to say that i have gotten some more done on the dent and swoosh areas...also, have been putting some more detail around the killstripes...i decided to leave the lark dark grey alone and apply it straight up, and i feel it came out pretty well... i am just going with the stencils from the stencil thread, thanks Dookie for those! i am also using reference photos from superjedi's paintup threads as well...thanks brother!

Re: BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP/**PIC INTENSE**

ok, well now that i HAVE gone crosseyed this afternoon, here are some pics of where i finished up for the day...to begin, from my first attempt of doing a paint up on my mystery lid, i remembered how tough it was to get the spacing down right and have the damage postitioned correctly... so, i took the distance from the corner of the t-visor out to the middle, and then looked at the distance on the stencil...well, i couldnt get the printer to print out the correct size to match up to my lid, so what i did was to find the center of each the stencil and my lid across the top of the mandible, and then reference the damage on the stencil right at the halfway point...then i just painted in eyeballing the stencil (hence the crosseyed effect ) the damage as i went...i was careful not to do the damage too big like i had done in the past, and i am very happy with my end product so far... i left some of the silver out near the bottom of the mandible, just above the upper cheeck, due to some larger maroon and grey detail that needs to be added first so i dont have too much to paint over the silver... i also took a pic of the left mandy with the sp lark dark grey added in... onto the pics!

Very nice work, you're right about the scale of the damage, it's real easy to make it slightly too large, i find you almost need to make it more compact...the scale on your paint up looks spot on...

thanks guys, appreciate the feedback! TF, you are a pro here, so that means alot brother!

got some of the grey down on the right upper mandible, been working on that area for awhile now...SOOOOOO much detail that i am really trying to pull off of the stencils...it is a 2-edged sword, for sure! so much fun doing this type of detail, but man it is difficult... i am very pleased with how it is coming along...i know there are some silver details that need to be added in, and of course more of the grey areas need to be finished up, but this is where i ended up last night...

Hey, excellent! Boba has a face now!
I know what you mean about seeing those shapes with your eyes closed. That right mandible is a killer.
Isn't it strange how sort of stark it looks with only the silver/gray? But once you go back and add the maroon, it looks right! Great work, man.

Re: BOBAMAKER HELMET PAINT UP/**PIC INTENSE**

thanks brother! yep, got him somewhat of a face now... and ya, once that maroon goes down it will all tie together...

now, as i am going across the top, and getting to the left part of the mandible, i have seen in some of your threads, brother, some pics you put side by side of the MoM and screen pics of the left side of the helmet...well, i know that the crack up there is on the MoM, but not on the screen used helmet...i have really studied your pics, the Mom pics, and the screen pics, and it is pretty clear to me that there isnt much silver so to speak between the tvisor and earcap on the left side of the helmet...am i correct in saying that? any input is greatly appreciated everyone on this topic...i have begun on that area, kind of combining the screen shots, MoM pics, and superjedi's rendition, and will post some pics up once i have it nailed down to what i feel is going on in that area, and of course after what anyone wants to input...comparison pics would be great!! thanks guys!

thanks for all the encouragement, fellas! much appreciated! can't wait to get this bad boy finished up...

i have completed, for the most part (few of the dark grey areas still needed) the silver and grey on the mandibles...i attempted the area up at the corner of the left side of the tvisor, and feel really good about the outcome... next up, the maroon to finalize the detail, then onto, oh, maybe the catscratch, but probably the cheeks... thanks for looking, and the continued support, brothers!
