Boba Helmet 3D Model & Print WIP

Well, I can certainly agree we will all strive to best that is available to us at any one time. That might also explain why I've owned 7 distinct and different castings since this all started. Other than the original MF the only one that has truly interested me that I've not managed to see, and that I know definitely exists, is the BM; at this point it's more curiosity with regard to the BM than anything else.

In respect of Art, Gino et al selling their MFs because there was something better; that might be the case or it might not. I've not seen evidence of anything other than them being sold.

Edit: pos?

Pos= piece of sheite

What's happened to my poor build thread lol..

Anyway, I'm all moved into my new flat (Probably the most stressed I've ever been!). The "Mancave" is mostly set up But no internet until the 7th, and no phone signal so I'm at a stand still until then. Having to go out of my flat to check responses to the thread

I don't see it as a fist fight.

I certainly agree there are plenty of people out there that want a FPH2 and plenty out there that are happy with the ones they already own. That is not in dispute. My mind is open on all of this so if someone can come up with a convincing argument around any of these helmets or any other thing then I'm interested.

Pos: gotcha.
Maw sorry, this just kind of happened but it's an interesting discussion. This other stuff probably deserves its own thread but it's a topic that's been politely skirted around for some time

No need to apologise!

I just didn't realise I'd spark this little debate with my build and own opinions haha

I appreciate all the help.
All of your opinions and experience with each sculpt can only help me.

Just stay civil

Oh no! Me neither...just my feeble attempt at humor. [emoji3]

Phew. I was worried there. I know that FP might be seen as a polarising figure but that isn't on the table here. Not for me anyway. In fact it's a lot more civil than some threads I've seen of a similar nature. I'm not talking specifically about FP or FP products here, I mean far more generally than that. Some threads concerning accuracy or perceptions of accuracy get out of hand and ugly very quickly. I'm not just talking about Fett. I mean everything.

An old post of Gino's at the RPF suggests that Natty based his sculpt of the MSH on a copy of a Don Post Deluxe and built up around it which would mean that the MSH is derived from the PP2 as the ultimate source. The PP2 line seems to account for so many helmets in fandom.

Personally I feel that trying to introduce extra flare is generally a mistake and that the sides are only very slightly away from parallel on all the helmets; the aforementioned visor placement and therefore mandible position creating or reducing that perception of flare.
Don't know where Gino got that from, I think things are getting cloudy with the passage of time. The msh project started when I stumbled across a fantastic don post 95 vinyl helmet. It had an amazing shape to it, a subtle flair to the sides. In my nievety I thought it would be a simple case of layering clay over the helmet to scale it up and preserve the shape. Boy was I wrong lol I ended up completely resculpting the helmet. I did have access to a don post deluxe helmet to take some measurements to help with scale but the helmet ended up a unique sculpt. Art Andrews was a huge help with reference material and critiquing the sculpt as it progressed. Luckily while I was sculpting the helmet The Art of Star Wars was exhibiting in Edinburgh and I was able to get a side to side measurement of the hero fett helmet, but that's another story lol That allowed me get much closer to the size and proportion of the original.
The MSH is an original sculpt.
The msh 2 was reworked by fett pride, pretty sure it's documented on here what the changes were.

If I was to do it all over again I'd make the vertical section of the visor narrower and make the dent smaller.

Boba Helmet 3D Model & Print WIP

I've adjusted the cheek area again, giving it more depth (but now realising it's too high up so I'll push it down later.. also messed around with other parts, doesn't look like much but the front is getting there.. Still need to bring out the top of the mandibles to become level with top of the T visor.

And here someone on facebook lined up my bucket on top of bobas, for the lols :D

Have a good weekend guys,
more soon!..
Helmet is looking good so far Maw

Your helmet flare looks off to me though, bottom of the flare looks good but for me the helmet isn't wide enough around the brim and its over emphasising the flare.

Keep going, I really like how it's looking but at the end of the day it's your sculpt and you have to be happy with it

Thanks for the advice :) I definitely see what your all saying. This view is in ortho in the modelling program so it does actually look different in perspective. Either way I'm going to keep altering it to match the MSH I first started using as reference and gallery shots. I'm eager to get back to work on this.

Thanks all :)

Let's see the DVH match it up then

Its not perfect by any means but i thought it was fairly close. I will be doing a V2 which will hopefully correct issues and also increase accuracy. None the less my personal opinion i still like the FPH2, i feel it gives the true ESB feel even if some say it isnt "right" It looks very convincing to me, i still like it as far as looking like an ESB helmet. I always did.

Also i dont know what cast you saw maybe a thin one? the early ones there was a few differnt ones as i was working out how i liked them the best..some are thick like Animefans, some were thinner, some were resin etc. At one point i wanted to make them as thin as possible to make them light weight wtihout being fragile, but was never happy with them 100% so i make them thicker now. The resin ones were resin so there is always the faults that come with that. Ive been casting for a while now about 7yrs, and i think my FG casting quality is pretty darn good at this point, not to pat myself on the back. No bubbles very solid evenly laid glass.

Onto the OP ..... i think the 3D print is looking awesome. I agree to always use screen reference when you can. Using other helmets you may transfer over any flaws they may have. The gallery has some great pics. I think your print is coming out great! I really need to get with the 3d printing thing. So many samll parts can be mocked up or even matsers made using 3D printing. I will get one eventually lol

..Nice..

Thanks Voorhees :D!
One more week until my Internet is back. I feel like I'm living in the stone age lol..
Can't even play my xbox offline
I'll be collecting all the images I can and sort this front view out so I can finally move onto the sides. They shouldn't be that hard to sculpt :D
Anyway I'll still be occasionally working on this, but I've still got to sort out my bucket and saber for kylo build. And that takes priority I'm afraid. (I'm being a total accuracy nut with that also and have decided to sell off my $450 bucket and do it myself.. sigh lol)

I'd happily print off parts for you for material cost and shipping but I still think with you being in the US 3dhubs or shapeways would be better.

3dhubs is good though, You can commission people nearby with printers for that kind of stuff. worth looking into if your not a fan of shapeways prices or don't have a printer :)

Nice thread! You guys are pretty intense (in a good way ;)). I picked up a copy of substance painter/designer a week and a half ago and immediately wanted to model/paint this helmet. I came to the dented helmet and found the hi-res don-post-deluxe, which has quite a bit of lens distortion in the views, but are really cool.

Anyways, I also modeled a helmet from those images. I couldn't wait to test the new tools on it, so I butchered (before your eyes) the paint job/model to try out materials. Would love critiques on the materials side (or whatever). For the 3D/Blender fans, I made the model in quads for subdivision surfacing. It's available for free download at

Hope I didn't derail the thread too much, just saw that it was sticky.

Cheers.
