Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
I posted the ESB hero helmet stencils and the color separation in a separate thread, this way the files can be found with more ease. The colors try to replicate the ones seen in the movie (Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back).
--------------------------------------
Update 29-11-2011
--------------------------------------
All files (except the dome, but will follow) were replaced with new and improved ones wich are a better replica of the original ESB helmet.
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 15-12-2011
--------------------------------------
The dome files were replaced with new and improved ones wich are a better replica of the original ESB helmet.
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 17-12-2011
--------------------------------------
Added the Dome Top image which is an approximation of that area, but helpful for everybody.
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 11-02-2012
--------------------------------------
Added two small red scratches on the top of the left mandible and the weathered Reefer Grey (same as the dome area) to the left lower cheek (thanks to Terminal Fettler and Jayvee). Also added the darker stain to the right lower cheek.
Attachment 58589
The white stains are not in the stencils on these two areas, because these are made by hand:
Attachment 58588
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 14-02-2012
--------------------------------------
Corrected a small area on the lower left ear (thanks Jayvee!). The 'Ears And Rangefinder' files were replaced, and the 'Helmet Perspective View' file too:
Attachment 58689
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 03-03-2012
--------------------------------------
Major changes in all files!!!
Added the Base Gray color to the Red Face, Cheeks, Back Plates (this color actually replaces the Mint Green color) and Dome. This Base Gray is the first coat applied on the helmet and is visible because with the unmasking process they pulled (accidentally) the Bright Silver paint on some areas. Changed the base green color of the left ear. Added more red spots on the Red Face. The Ears and Rangefinder stencil was redone, especially the left ear, the right ear and the ear decals. Added the rust-like marks around the killstripes, which I think is actually just a residue of the sprayed killstripe color along the masked area.
Most of the latest updates are from the discussions between Jayvee and me and can be found in Jayvee's awesome paint up thread here ==> Jayvee's Deluxe ESB Paint UP (With An Awesome BGHunter Lid)
Jayvee's thread (among others) is a good example of how you can paint an excellent helmet with great talent and a lot of love, using others helps and tips (all the great painters who are/were at TDH) and with a little bit of help using the stencils.
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 25-03-2012
--------------------------------------
By request I will upload all the separation files in archived JPG files for easy edit for those who want to alter the dimensions of the stencils.
--------------------------------------
--------------------------------------
Update 17-05-2012
--------------------------------------
Clonecollector had the idea to add an image with the physical damage of the ESB helmet in this thread:

Per request, I added the modified back plate files that are pretty close to the Asok CC, Bobamaker and GMH helmet measurements:

These files are not a perfect fit, so you will need to cut the stencils in 2-3-4 pieces and align them to the margins of the back plate.

Note that the Panzer Olive (Weathered) is actually Bright Silver painted on top (at least the painter tried to mask that color) with Panzer Olive Green. Also the color variation on the dent is due to the extreme dirt-like weathering, this is why you will see Reefer Gray/Reefer Gray (Weathered) and Bright Silver/Bright Silver (Weathered). Here's an image that shows the difference:

Well, the main difference is that the AoSW stencils has all the extra scratches that appeared after the filming of ESB while in my paint and scratches scheme I tried to ignore those extra scratches. But in both cases the stencils are just the tip of the iceberg, the hardest part is the way you apply all of this and all the weathering implied. I think the best paint artists of TDH can tell more about this...

It's a shame that electronic files don't weight anything, because these things are worth their weight in gold. ;) Absolutely invaluable information, thank you so much for all the hard work.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Hi Raf - mate, in the middle of an ESB paintup at the moment (will update the thread soon), and let me just say, your stencils have been invaluble - really fantastic stuff. What I have tried to do, is use the stencils, but also meticulously study the reference pics to get as close as I can. I found one small innacuracy on the back panels i just thought to share - please dont take this in any way, shape or form as a bad thing - as your stencils are the closest you can get bar none. I only point it out, as I'm sure so many people will use your stencils, that just thought to get supreme accuracy for the benefit of everyone :)
It's just a very minor detail on the Left hand panel (I have circled the area in the picture in yellow.) The long, jagged protrusion has actually been left grey in the stencils, but as you can see in the ref pic, it is actually predominately beige, with some small grey areas within. It also seems that between that and the top little extension, there is actually a bigger gap than in the stencils.
Again, very minor, and i'm a huge fan of your work and everything you do for these boards, so please dont think there is any ungratefullness in my rant - more just me being a pedantic old fart ;) cheers buddy, peace..

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Wow! Thanks for pointing this out! I had in my mind to do some corrections to the ESB stencils and I will do in the near future.
Thanks again!

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
All the stencils will be replaced with some accurate ones (these are not corrected, but made from scratch). I want to thank Britt Dietz for the awesome hi-rez images in the Gallery (the first entry in the C-IV section) that were a real help to recreate all the small scratches. I also used all the stills and screen captures (including my own captures) from ESB to do it as accurate as can be.
The first post was updated with some comparison images, while the remade stencils will follow shortly.
The 'red face' is more detailed (same as the other parts) and while some of the scratches were removed, others were rearranged to fit the overall pattern.
The back plate base color is more darker (as should be) and is more refined then the previous one. I also fixed the scratch color mistake pointed out by Jayvee at post #17 (thanks again!).
The cheeks were corrected and some small scratches removed.
The dome is still in work and will be updated last.
Thanks for your patience and confidence!

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Question on your PDF for the back panels Raf. You have listed two Reefer Grays in it. One is gray, the other looks to be a couple shades darker then the RLM73.

I think is the same color, but one color is applied over the concrete giving it a lighter shade, while the other is painted over the base color, this is why it looks darker.

Small change in the 'Ears And Rangefinder' files:

All the needed files were updated.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Perfect work my good man, that little area is spot on now :-) Something I wanted to run past you, was on the mandibles.. Within the silver damage, particularly on the right hand side where the bigger silver damage appears, do you feel there are any light grey basecoat areas coming through the silver? I ask this as I know they are definatly present on the AOSW version, but looking at screenshots of the hero, its a bit inconclusive for me if they were always there, or if they were a result of extra age damage over the years. Interested to get your thoughts, as you may have found more worthy screen pics to base evidence on. All in the name of accuracy my friend, sdo interested in your thoughts :-)

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Here is what I think: on the SuperTrooper costume documentation progress report at the Suit No. 6 it says 'painted grey' wich means the base color is gray, then they applied the silver coat and the rest of the colors (layered and topical). Some of the silver areas has that base gray color, and this might be because of the unmasking process, altough is hard to say if those areas were in time of filming of ESB, but some of the images incline to the presence of the base gray color.
Attachment 58700 Attachment 58701
The extra base gray scratches appeared after the filming of Empire, and these are the results of the ROTJ stunt helmet casting and/or the bad handling by the LFL staff.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Yea, i'm real happy with your call on that Raf. The pic I added in is simply your pic, and I just highlighted in yellow the other areas I was referring to, but I imagine they are in the same boat with the other areas of grey basecoat you point out. I was interested if these areas were always present, because it would be hard to rip the paint off to that underlying layer, but it's a fantastic point you make, and to be totally honest, one that didn't actually occur to me, in the fact that it was more likely due to the casting for the ROTJ helmet - that would do that sort of damage for sure. The other thing is, I was glad in a way that conclusion seems the most likely, as i'm liking where my mandibles sit at this stage, and was hoping not to have to add too much more detail ;) Awesome work once again bud, you are the absoloute stencil and info monster! many thanks again my friend :)

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
I realised from the start what areas you were talking about, this is why I added the four ESB Hero images to show that is hard to tell if the base gray color was already on the helmet or these appeared later on the helmet. Judging by the contour of the scratched area on the movie ESB Hero helmet and the later 'exibits' helmet shows that the base gray color was already on the helmet (there are no major differences on those areas between the two eras).
Attachment 58703
I might need to change those areas on my stencils...
-
Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
yea, its a toughie, and obviously with less than high res pics, it is a toughie to nail down. im pretty happy either way - if i dont have to do anything great, but if we all feel they were already present, then it wont be too tough a job to add.. :)

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
This will never end?!...
Thanks to the conversations between Jayvee and myself I further analised the base gray color (inside the bright silver scratches) and found hard evidences of the presence of this color in the ESB stills:
Attachment 58785 Attachment 58786
It seems that the green mint color on the back plates is actually base gray (the same as on the red areas) and this leads to a revise of the ESB helmet stencils and color separation files.
The first post was updated with preliminary files of all the areas.
-
Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Stencils
Perfect Raf, thats what I see too - I never saw that back colour as mint green, always the base grey. Terminal fettler did much research finding the right shade of grey, to be almost chameleon like - and it was more or less prominent depending on light and surrounding colours. I think the humbrol 147 light grey is perfect, and many thanks to TF for nailing that. Nice find on the pics too - I must say, the added inclusion of the light gry we have spoken about, really gives some great added depth to the paintjob. Once again, splendid work my friend! :-)

It seems that the ESB Hero helmet reserved more surprises than I thought. Yesterday I was looking (again!) at the ESB stills and found some extra scratches on the left back plate:

Also did some adjustments to the dent area:
Attachment 58838
Because of these (and possibly for other extra scratches) I will put the stencils on a hold, this way the update will be a final one.

Finally! I finished the stencils (again)! The first post was updated.
Don't know if I've posted in here yet, but this is a great thread... And I think you're right on with the "mint green" color. I for one never thought that was the right color anyway.. Not really sure why people use that color, cause it's not on the hero helmet.
Fantastic work!

Probably because when I posted my ESB paint stencils back in 2007 I thought that it looked mint green, based on the reference pics I had at the time. A lot of people have painted buckets using those stencils. It's good to see members continually analyzing and refining the information here.

Thanks! I agree with you. Sometimes is hard to judge a color because of the different lighting and/or bad images, but luckily this is the result of a group project and it seems that all the effort was paid off.

I did a test extraction of one of the ZIP files and it worked good for me. It seems that you have an outdated program and you need to update or to search the net for a better program. Try WinZip or WinRAR but there are other good programs too, just google for 'free zip extractor' and as an example choose the second result (downloaded, installed and is working good).

For a topical paint job go here ==> Superjedi's GMH as ESB for Lucksy31 and/or here ==> Converting the GMH to an ESB AOSW....
