Boba Fett ESB Helmet Paint Stencils

This is the thread to post paint/scratch templates/stencils for Boba Fett's helmet, ESB version. Let's do a separate thread for the ROTJ version.

Also this is just an update, so there will be others added. I have to finish Shabad's helmet then I sould have enough time before my next painting project to finish these out. Also, this can be a GROUP project. Jango Fett Jr was kind enough to let me use the 'dent' stencil he used on his helmet for this project, and I have contacted other members who have expressed interest in helping me get these scanned and posted to the board for everyone to download. This is not a 'money' project, so no fees will be charged for the stencils.
AFFO$'s original thread was deleted by accident. Will the contributors to the previous thread please repost their templates? I can recall AFettFullofDollars, Evan4218, and mrgr8ness having posted, maybe others?

    Mandibles

Here are templates for the red mandible area. Here's a preview of what the PDFs look like. Composite and color separations are posted. Also, these are in PDF vector format, so you can adjust print size to fit whatever helmet you're painting. The ones I'm doing are based on the "Art of Star Wars exhibition" paint condition (some extra scratches), scaled for wizardofflight's helmet templates.

DANG CD! Your stencils make mine look like a kindergartener with a crayon! Excellent work! I'm actually using YOUR stencils on my BKBT conversion helmet and they work like a charm. Thanks for all of your hard work.

How do I resize them to be printed out?

You may have to try increasing the size gradually until they fit.
If you printed one at 100%, try printing at 105% and see if that works. Print in grayscale to save on your color till you have the size dialed in.

Also, depending on which helmet you're working on, you may have to slightly alter the size of each individual template. (Just because you make "Template A" 104% doesn't necessarily mean all templates will work at 104%. . . know what I mean?)
I find your lack of faith disturbing. . .

Cat Scratch and other Dome scratches, part 1

Thanks for the kind words, everybody.

Here is a template for the "cat scratch" and other scratches above the red mandible rim on the front. The gray blob toward the right is the same as the one in the kill stripes stencil I posted earlier. I will try to post color separations later.

Geez, these templates are just too cool!
Just curious about something with this latest one: how do you take the dome curvature into account? Like when you take a globe and lay it out flat, you wind up with some distortion of the continents. But everything in your template looks like it's proportioned correctly.

I've been having some trouble figuring that out, which is probably why I did all the flat surfaces first. For the dome parts, like the rest, the stencils may need a little or a lot of adjustment when the paint goes on a real helmet. Reference photos of the prop are always the final word when it comes to shape and size and location of details.

For this latest one, I did some correction for height, and also limited the area to the part just before the curvature becomes more dramatic.

I'd thought that if I could get all the dome scratches done, I could map them to the segmented dome template that wizardofflight did. But, I'm not sure how useful that is in the context of painting a helmet.

I apologize to all you pros in advance, but what exactly do you do with the stencils? I know, just a padawan.... Obviously you are using them for painting but how? And what kind of paints? I am never going to learn unless I ask so I thought I would do just that.

By the way, they look fantastic even though I don't know much about them.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Paint Stencils

Sorry bruv... not seen your question before, and i wouldn't consider myself pro either?

But this is what I did on one of my lids:

Depending on what version lid you have? print the templates (one at a time or you will waste paper) and 'offer' the template up to the lid on a known area.. lets use the back rear left section? once the template 'fits' your lid you now know what scale to print these out at?
When I first printed them out they did not fit my lid... I opened them in Photoshop and rescaled in both thte X & Y.
Then once this has been achived, I then traced the stencil onto tracing paper and used a soft pencil on the reverse side / layed it over the required area and using a toothpick trace back over the template... leaving a fine mark where you can now 'paint by numbers'

Any good for ya? repeat this process for the remainder of the templates... be patient as it takes time...
It's nice to be important... But it's more important to be FETT...

My first helmet was painted with a brush. I had not yet heard of this wonderful website and was pretty much working on it from clips of the film alone. It turned out okay, but my newest is much better, and I did it all with rattle cans.

Look up some of Superjedi's threads. He talks about how to transfer the stencil to the helmet. Also, Madmartigan has a great idea too using graphite paper.

Almost everything in that folder originated from this site. At least I found a couple of old Catherine Wheel albums on that server.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Paint Stencils

Hey guys, I just received my BM bucket last week(after years of waiting to have the money) and spent the weekend trying to size the templates correctly for it. For the life of me I just could not seem to get it right, here are the steps that I would follow when printing from Adobe.
    1. Page Scaling set to fit to printable area
    2. Next go to printer properties and then use the zoom feature to either increase or decrease the size, starting at 100% and working from there.
If anyone could lend a hand or let me know if I am doing this wrong I would greatly appreciate it.

    Hi
instead of printing out the templates have you thought of sizing the template on your screen to the size of your helmet. Trace the templates directly off your screen using some tracing paper.
The process is a little longer but it a sure fire way of getting it correct straight away.
    Hope this helps

Well here's the method I use. It describes how I use reference photos, but could easily be adapted to use the .pdf stencils as well.

There are other methods, too! I just choose to do it this way.
I find your lack of faith disturbing. . .

these stencils are awesome...and so far, my bucket is turning out wicked cool....i wonder if anyone has thought of coming up with the sizing ratios for photoshop based on what kind of helmet's being used.

Hey guys, new to the site/forum. Also new to painting helmets, but not new to art and fabrications in general. I didn't see this listed in this thread or in superjedi's thread. I want to get some opinions on this technique. Print out the correct size stencils, use an exacto to cut them out, give them a light mist of spray-on adhesive, set and paint. This way you can just hit your areas with a rattle can and once things are dry you can simply peel the paper template away. I think this method would be quicker and more acurate, almost no room for mistakes rather than trying to paint inside lines. Thoughts?

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Paint Stencils

I wanted to post this as a separate topic, but my question fits PERFECTLY into this thread.

Years ago, I got handy my first fiberglass helmet, a DP (Don Post) DELUXE-recasted ESB helmet. Same helmet I've started and trooped with until Spring 2005 (when I got an MS2 and assembled, painted and sent by our own (and who I consider a FRIEND OF MINE up to this date, who I met him once....when I was in costume....long story)...SpideyFett.

Anyway, THAT helmet had something in particular that differs from all the Boba helmets out there and that I have'nt seen afterwards from ALL THE AWESOME makers....which are the grooves, dents, scratches, inperfections....etc, that shows on the helmet itself, even when you pass your fingers through those details.

Months ago, I've seen a topic showing where THOSE dents and scratches are located on the ESB helmet, but I've lost THAT topic and images, which PERFECTLY FIT in this thread, but I need to know before I invest into another Fett helmet, or repaint one I already have. The question to this topic is....WHERE ARE THOSE ESB HELMET, SCRATCH/DENT STENCILS/TEMPLATES?

If someone knows about THAT particular topic, please post here or PM me. Thanks.

Re: Boba Fett ESB Helmet Paint Stencils

These stencils are amazing! I just have one question. I have painted the base coat with humbrol 147, light grey. According to Terminal Fettlers list I should mask off the light grey damage, but I'm not sure which areas that includes.

The lower cheeks have a colour described as "looks like dull metal". Is that the light grey areas?

I was pretty sure there should be some light grey damage on the green back panels, but that is listed as bright silver. So I guess there is no light grey damage there?

The back red areas and the mandibles have a colour described as "base metal", is that the light grey?

    Thanks in advance.

You could, but it would look just like an ESB helmet only with different shades of colors. The stencils are specific for the weathering of the ESB damage, which is totally different from the damage of the ROTJ helmet.

Thanks for your reply. Is there any templates for the rotj scratches? I searched but donīt find anything. I think i got to use ref pic out of the web.

By the way, i got a new visor for my dp helmet. Now my question, when i cut out the old visor, have i to replace the visor quickly or can i paint it first?

I know it might be kinda cheating, but I mean, if you can't paint all that well, it would be really great to have these printed out on vinyl stickers at like a sign store and stick them onto a helmet and heat gun out the wrinkles. But then you'd have to colour match the greens for the domes.
