bmx potty + filler = helmet?
seeing as i've been scouring this awsome site for info, pictures and tips over the last three months, i think its only fair i offer up my efforts for you guys to rate. This helmet is based around a found bmx helmet that loosely resembles the MSH dimensions, the construction uses 2mm plastic card and car body filler + many hours! I'm going to cast in resin and fibre glass with an aluminium filler, the idea being to polish to a shiny finish and then layer paints. i would be greatfull of any feedback/critisism before i go to cast it......

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Tell me you did not scratchbuild that. You're joking right? :P
If you did in fact make that yourself that is fan-friggin-tastic!! All you scratchbuilders are doing amazing work lately, I'm very envious of the skill you have to build an entire helmet.
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
:suprise *** ....DUDE that is amazing!!!!!!!!!! Nice work.:thumbsup
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
I have to echo what JFJ said. . . you scratched that????????
Geez, if I had any sculpting ability at all. . . grumble, grumble
Absolutely stellar!
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
You made that in 3 months?!?
Got any work-in-progress pics? I'd be highly interested in seeing how it came together.

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
The scratchbuilders are coming out of the woodwork! :suprise
Nice work man! :thumbsup

The only possible, tiny, insignificant thing I could mention would be the line I've highlighted below. I believe it's supposed to be vertical, rather than angled in as you made it.

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
The dent looks strikingly similar to my MSH2 dent. It also has the same wavy brow as my MSH2. I would be very intrested in seeing progress pics.

Really? I thought it looked more like the BM helmet dent and brow.
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Perhaps, I am not looking at my MSH2 right now, but that is what I thought of the moment I saw it. I forgot BM's dent was textured like that also. But since he mentioned that his helmet was close in measurment to a MSH that is what made me think of that.

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Some "how it was made pic's" would be a great thing to provide now...:thumbsup
Just looking at some comparison pic's of both TF and BM buckets and there are lots of minor differences...
but some very strong simularitys also...
I have adjusted the background to be black on TF's pic.
I have filled in a grey visor area on BM's pic.
I have slightly resized the TF pic down smaller.
I have rotated TF pic by about 2 degree's to match the angles.
http://img56.imageshack.us/img56/4619/bmbucket4ce.jpghttp://img69.imageshack.us/img69/300...ketcopy3ya.jpg
Its the wavy brow that seemed to stand out the most to me, so i just had to play around and see how close they really matched...
Then...
I used Photoshop's "magic wand" to highlight an area on the front of TF's bucket and "moved" it across onto the BM bucket....
well it fits very well and its very similar to say the least...( i have a picture that shows this but wont post it yet so i dont seem like a pitchfolk weilding villager..)
Now im not trying to start anything here, heck....
I still remember the days of BM being dragged across the coals way back when he first bought out his bucket for show-and-tell...:lol :lol
im just agreeing with above comments that some progress pics might be a wise idea...:thumbsup
surely, if the top is a BMX POTTY helmet then lets just see the inside of the bucket?...;)
Proof-positive of an original scratcher if the POTTY's visible there, aint it?...:)

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
thanks for all the feedback and comments, firstly superjedi, you're right about the pronounced trim angle, but i kind of liked the way it looked! secondly its a real complement to be compaired with Bobamakers great helmet....the similarities are purely coincidental...to construct my potty ive used as many ref pics from this site as possible, but always referring back to screen images from ESB. i traced images from screen onto perspex, allowing me to line up my helmet by eye and check the shape during construction, crude but effective. the bmx potty was prised off a mates head( i promised him a finished helmet as payment!)all the vent holes were filled and basic trimming and sanding done( it made me wonder wether the original helmet was bike related as one of the vent holes was close to the dent?) i then curved 2mm plastic sheet to form the front and back. this formed a tube shape rather than flairing all the around, i had to fix a bar inside to produce desired ear flair. this pulled the back of the helmet inwards, forming an ideal starting point for the grill. once the frame work for the grill was in place i filled around this to the desired thickness....the rest followed on from there! heres some pictures:

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Excellent stuff!:thumbsup
Having the fore-thought to take progress pic's saves you alot of trouble, hence why they were asked for...;)
Great job and now sit back and bask in your glory!:cheering
It would be great to get some side by sides with other available buckets for comparisons of size etc...:thumbsup

I have to admit that I thought this thread was going to turn bad real fast. But great googly moogly that is one awesome idea, and a super awesome fett helmet you have there. The buddy that gave up the helmet will be very pleased that he did so, I wouldnt mind having one myself. Im still speechless that you got it that good on your first try, wish I could do the same.

the basic measurements pretty much follow the MSH dimensions, however, i cross referenced at all stages with off screen tracings from as many angles as poss. This may appear very crude ( from the poor photos below it does anyway) but i felt happier trusting my eye. In terms of scale , i think its marginally bigger than an MSH. Using my patented "back door computer screen" (Bill Gates feel free to....) the outlines do match, its just difficult to show through a digital camera lense!

Er, not exactly my first attempt, this was a 2 month rush job for new years 05 (though not the paint job i used) its always valuble to learn from your mistakes, i think more ref material may have helped......I wish i had known of this site back then!( its not always a good idea being drunk in charge of a Boba Fett....)

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
That is still an awesome scratch build for a second try, especially since its based off a bicycle helmet. That paint job is awesome too man. You are gonna have an awesome Fett suit when you get finished. It will blow your O5 suit away.

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
thanks for the positive comments everyone. im just finishing the range finder and stalk, and am a little bit stumped on how to cast the stalk hollow? I want the three leds in the unit but all the gubbins tucked away in the helmet. Now, i do have a steady hand but drilling down 8" of resin doesnt seem doable! So any pointers?
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
very cool!...
I am sure someone can chime in with advise on casting a hollow stalk. I know that some have actually cast extruded metal pipe in them before, for strength, you may be able to use that to your advantage. Just an idea.
As for the cat's arse....couldn't tell ya, I don't look at them...
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
thanks for that, i've removed that last comment( didnt want people to get the wrong idea!)
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
i have no clue really, but i would think have some sort of rod covered in release agent woudl be placed in the middle, with the resin surrounding it, and once it has cured, the rod would slip out and it would be hollow.
that's just how i woudl imagine.
but i don't know for sure
-=QuinN!
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
thats a great idea, i may give that a go, cheers...
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Another possibility would be to put the wires in the stalk while you are casting it.
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Thats impressive !!!! :suprise
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
I believe you could just use some sort of small aluminum tube and just leave it in...I think someone else on the boards was doing the same thing.
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Do you by chance have a pic of the bmx helmet before you turned it into an amazing piece of art?
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
unfortunately i dont. i can tell you it was made by Bell, and it had a ridge around the back which i had to sand flat. also had loads of vents which had to be filled. when i measured the circumference it was approx. 15mm more than the msh dimension, so i thought it would be a good match...

Is this style close?
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...7634?n=3375251
Doesn't really have a ridge though.

Or closer to this style?
-Great Helmet btw!
-
Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
that first one looks close, you only need a basic form to start with, by adding thin layers of filler you can tweak the overall shape until its just right...i would use those mystery helmet measurements as a guide, cheers...

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Oh, I'm not planning on doing a Boba helmet at the moment, lol, I still have other projects to finish up like my wolverine claws. I was just bored and did a quick search in case any one wanted try one of there own. Once again that helmet is sweet!

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet?
Just a quick update on my scratchbuild. I've just cast the clear resin piece and installed a basic led kit i modified to include a blue/white screen light. The kit included two adjustment screws for led speed and alternation and by a total fluke just snapped into place! I couldn't find a mercury switch so have installed a basic bearing tilt switch, seems to work just fine. I'm still tweaking details on the helmet and hopefully casting soon......

It's basically a small tube with a ball bearing in it.
it rolls down to the end and makes contact with two terminals - completing the circuit.

I think they work on the same principle, its a tiny tube with two terminals at one end (these run to the battery) the bearing rolls from one end to the other either making or breaking the current. This is also a very sensitive switch, as the bearing moves easily in the tube!
****, you just beat me to that explanation:doh

Finally got round to moulding the potty! Heres a pic of the skin mould sat in its two piece jacket, the T20 silicone rubber just peeled straight off the master leaving it intact, phew. (i had visions of having to break it up ) Luckily the T20 is very elastic:cheering In 48 hours time (when its properly cured) i should have a cold cast aluminium bucket...........to start painting

Re: bmx potty + filler = helmet? FINISHED
At last! It stopped raining and the sun came out just long enough for a few pics:cheering This just popped out of the mould an hour ago, i've given it a quick buff with a foam sanding block and cut out the visor. The T visor is just held in with tape for effect. I'm going to slightly up the alu powder mix on the next potty to see how far i can take the finish. Next i'm going to make a borden and cold cast in bronze to give it that gold glint....Hope you enjoy the pics.....

How hard is it to trim stuff off of cold cast stuff? i.e. cutting out the visor. Is it like cutting resin or like cutting metal?

Cold cast is no more difficult to cut or sand than a resin with a regular filler, its purely the nature of the alu. filler which gives the metallic finish. I've painted both acrylics and enamels onto this stuff with good results....
