Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

Hey everyone of course I'm new here and have been reading through Antmans build and ave decided to take on building on for myself for SDCC 2014.
I will be using RafalFetts templates. I'll be keeping track of everything here. I will also try to keep a running tally as well.

I will be doing one to see how it looks using manila folders for trial purposes since I already have the folders. I am currently just gluing the templates to the the folders.
So far my supplies list consist of:
    Boba Fett helmet Template
    Manilla Folders
    Scissors
    Glue

That's great! It's great that you will try to do a prototype helmet (and will learn a lot), but you might take a look at my improved helmet template: the RWH v2. Just keep us posted with your progress!

    question for you all.
what materials do I need besides glue and scissors for the first part of putting the helmet together? I have some manilla folders i will glue the templates to or should I get some kind of thicker poster board?
I am seeing people use resin with fiber glass or just resin what is the best way to do this wouldn't using fiber glass make the helmet stronger?

Re: Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

A method that I have been using with pepakura is layering with .060" (1.5 mm) thick architectural cardboard. I put the outer paper shell together and make pieces that are the same size out of the cardboard. I use a wood glue for the adhesive. I will build up the surface to whatever thickness I want to achieve. Also glue pieces of the card stock where the seems are to make it more rigid. When I get the shell to the desired wall thickness it gets a coat of Smooth Cast 320, which is a resin. This seeps into all the crack & crevices & even absorbs into the cardboard & paper somewhat. This is done on the inside & outside. I will then use fiberglass mesh tape used for dry walling. I have used filler prior to applying the Smooth Cast and it works just as well. This technique was used for my helmet, jetpack, knee armor, gauntlets, collar, & back armor. It is proving to be very durable as I have been finding out with my wife's Boushh, her back tanks have been getting beat on during a few of her troops but are holding up well. Been refining things as I go along. I went with this method after reading some things over on the 405th sight, but I have modified their methods. I don't think warping will be a problem due to the cardboard core, plus it does have some flexibility. Went this route cause it is odor free & sets up quickly, have to make small batches. Just another way of doing things to achieve the same end result. Hope this helps.

alright here are some progress pics

I know to cut out that hash lined portion of the dome.

I have a question now do i just put some fiberglass resin on the helmet as is in one part or would it be okay for me to resin it in 2 parts dome and rest of helmet? also is there a better brand of resin or does it really matter?

Re: Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

Alright so I am at it again messed up my first pepakura helmet trying to rush it. Now I want to know where do I start? dome? or do i just go number by number?

  14. #14

Re: Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

For a start, don't rush it. You want every stage to be a good foundation for the next, so no thinking 'I'll fix it in the next stage'. Take your time; we'll want to see pictures of your progress anyway so that's an excuse to stop working and get the camera out. Secondly, for Raf's templates, I followed his instructions here: http://www.thedentedhelmet.com/f23/r...s-build-45938/ and pretty much did everything in the order listed. The card inserts are essential in building the shape early on so remember to include them. For WOF templates, I'd just follow Antman's tutorial, although the build is pretty similar.

Re: Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

alright so this is as far as i have gotten with my pep helmet build
    http://tinypic.com/m/i20rwz/2

    notice the numbers i added
this is the piece that is confusing me.
    http://tinypic.com/m/i20rx5/2

for some reason the numbering is throwing me off like it dome piece goes right to left 474 477 478 480 481 483 485 487
    then the extra piece i posted is numbered righrt to left 487 485 483 481 480 478 477 474
then on the other side 488 486 484 482 479 489 476 475, and there is no way that i can match the numbers to each other the way they should be.

Is that supposed to be the jutted out part of the top of the visor? Where the red (for lack of description) indents and then connects with the dome? That's how the Pep file I used did it

Very good start & looking good. Skip's pep file is very nice to put together & looks good. I will say it isn't 100% accurate but looks really good when completed. I recommend any of Skip's pep files. His jetpack & gauntlets are well done as well.

I know its not 100% accurate file fir this one i am not going for accuracy just looking to actually finish my first helmet. I already downloaded and printed armor Files and gauntlet files I'll look into his pack files soon.

Re: Bigluelok's 1st ever Boba Fett Helmet Scratch Budget Build

There really isn't an accurate pep file out there for the helmet in order to make a scratch build with all of the asymmetrical features. I have been working on a pep file that does that & hope to finish it soon. It has the irregular shaped dome, different sized cheeks, & a few other things that will help with accuracy to allow for a more accurate scratch built helmet.

Yours is looking great. I look forward to seeing more progress.
