Good job so far. Are you planning to key the silver layer to ensure the subsequent layers bond properly? In the past I've found layering onto a shiny metallic finish can cause adhesion issues ie random paint lift...

Re: Big Game ESB paint up WIP

    Thanx TF's.
Trepp yes this is the lid from my new mold , (the same one you are getting)
Fettler On my Jedi paint up i used the same silver and it seamed ok , after silver i liquid mask a little were i want the damadge then paint the colour and then i scratch out the rest of the weathering/battle damadge once i get it how i want it i lay a good solid clear coat on it and it tends to make it solid and keep it sturdy, but until then i realy cant handle it any were that has the paint layering on it, becouse the paint will just come of ,
    Cheers

Also im doing this all with air brush , it is so much better than the spray paint , if any one is undesided weather to take the plundge in to air brush town DO IT ,
I picked up an air brush from the bay for 12 bux and each of the humbrol paints go for 2.50n - 4.50 and at the mo im using a gas propelant can 28 bux(compressoris on its way) so it is actualy cheaper to go the airbrush way and so much better to control

same here with the silver it can pull off paint put over when u try and remove the masking especially if you use tape

awesome j, look forward to following this thread.

and for everyone - would a clear coat over the silver be wortwhile? i know it would all be duled down on completion, but to save it lifting and help paint adhering, would this be the way to go?

Re paint lifting off the silver layer, I found if the silver goes on in lots of thin coats if tends to end up with a slightly textured finish as opposed to a couple of thick coats where the result is often a shiny finish. If this is the case you can always lightly buff the surface with fine wire wool to key the paint...

nice work tf, makes alot of sense. got one of jintos helmets on the way shortly, and in researching colours, clear coats, lifting, masking etc it seems to just be a case of lots of trials to see what works with what before startin the real thing. so il try the wire wool idea next.. :-)

Don't go too heavy with the wool though, you don't want to remove any paint, just very lightly scratch the surface, then remove any dust before the layers go on...

all i will say on this matter, is that i have had the pleasure of dealing with jinto, he is an incredibly humble guy, loves what he does and makes a fantastic product. he has great knowledge through his own trial and error, and the amount of newb questions i have pm'd him and hes been absolutely awesome in giving me loads of help and ideas. not only do i totally believe his work is his own work with lots of blood, sweat and tears put in, i can recommend anyone to deal with him, as hes a real champ.

    anyways, rant over,
    peace :-)

looks great so fat Jinto! Man, being accused of recasting sucks...glad it seems to be cleared up though. This is the exact reason i posted every single thing i did with mine. And i realized i forgot the little rectangle slot in the left cheek on mine ...whoops!..thats ok..the V2 will be corrected lol!

Ow i posted lots of build pix , but that wasnt the problem, turnd out it looked to much like the helmets i was modiling mine from (imagine that) any way its all behind me now and i will no longer post my works on this board,
but after a little brake from painting and making lids ill be back at it , i was putting to much of my time and efort in to them,
and other thing in my life are more important at present,

it looks like it more so but theres not actual over spray its actually 3 different colors like yellow, then yellow orange then orange yellow of sorts...good luck its not looking bad alot of people use decals for Fett sakes and thats just silly IMHO keep up the good work brother your doing great with it.

In my opinion, I actually think decals are fine if applied correctly, and with small sponges, they can be coloured and weathered to look very sharp. ive tried both methods in trials, and there isnt that much of a noticable differrence. but thats just me, and you guys are likely far more experienced..

jinto - looking awesome buddy. just a quick question - what green are you using in your airbrush for the dome, as i really like it. is it a mix or a standard colour? and how different in person is it to the colourbond rivergum we have discussed previously, or even the tamiya field grey? i just know colours in pics can sometimes be differrent to the real thing, but it looks really good, and from here pretty close to the rivergum. really fantastic work tho buddy, you should be well pleased, keep it up big fella

    Cheers guys ,
I think F4R is refering to the vinyl kill stripes decalls, (seeing as they are one colour)
ILL get a pic of a helmet that has rivergum , next to that one next to one with the field gray , tomorow, now i need to sleep

I have always used reefer yellow for the base layer of the kill stripes and then applied a misting of Milw Road Orange over the top with a heavier application of it towards the back kill stripes but those are polly scale colors.

fair enough, i can definately see why some would go the decal route, as they are a nice, clean finish, and far less fiddly, and can be weathered nicely if done with the right tools, but then painted stripes if done well have a real professional look. I certainly think there is pros and cons of both methods, but ultimately, people have produced quality lids using either, so whatever makes the individual happy I guess. peace

JV this is the difrentces in the colours the yellow visor
Is mist green (this is the colour before , rivergum on the colour bond colour chart, the names my be difrent but seeing as the are all made to the colour bond colour standards the difrent brands and names are always pretty close)
The finished ROTJhelmet is done with field grey, the one im working on now is actually a mix of humbrol colours mostly No.78 ,with some No. 120, No. 88 and also No. 31,
i remixed the clour a few times to get it looking how i thought it should look,
theother helmets dome is done in rivergum , so seeing them all together the are pretty close ,

I don't know man it looks good to me if you go to light with the gray you loose some of the detail, I noticed that when I painted my Bobamaker.

    Thanx mate
    The upper cheeks are next,
I did actually paint orange on the last 4 stripes, Its hard to see in the pics but if you were to look at it in peson youd see,
(Try this, blowing up the 5th pic and cover up the center stripes with your hand leaving 2 on either side youl be able to see the difrentse in colour then ,

As for the back panels , Im saving them till last , I may need to consider at least printing templates , so i can at least see the colours broken down to there individual patterns
Ive looked at the gallery pix over ad over and , and i feel ive got them pretty close

    Got some more paint down,
im thinking the grey is a bit to dark
so im thinking that i should redo the gray on the visor
i think youre doing a stellar job mate, looking really good. with the grey on the visor, it could be a tad dark from those photos, but steel wool and a dullcote may change that too. i know on my test colours, i had to go with ironlak lazy grey for the dome and cheek area which is a darker grey, and then for the mandibles, i went with ironlak melbourne grey which is a shade lighter. i think its because the green is a greyish green, it needs to be darker on that area than on the mandibles, where the red plays off differently against the grey. youd hardly know they were different greys when looked at all together, and id say thats a good thing. not sure if this mite be what youre facing, but if so, a lighter shade on the mandibles mite be the right option. great work again bro! :-)

get the templates and make sure theyre scaled to each panel as they may be different than the templete

I think i may see how that goes , I dont want to but red s down and realise then that i need to change , and in real life its actually a bit darker than the pics,

with the back panels ill print the templates but i wont be tracing them down ,, more just a visual aid (the way i see it is the templates as great as they are , are some one else's interpretation on the paint work)

Excellent work Jinto, those colours really look authentic, which colour red did you go for on the mandibles in the end?

Re: Big Game ESB paint up WIP

Cheers guys , I appreciate it,
TF , I used , a mix of every red I have and a few browns (60, 174, 132, 73, 133), I just kept adding to the mix , then after 2 coats of that I misted really lightly a dust coat of each red ,since the pic ive buffed it up and dull coated it and it looks better,,
It was a real task ..
