Batting Helmet Bucket Repaint ROTJ

What do you do when you have an FP premium on the way? You repaint your scratchbuild for ROTJ. I wanted to try a completely layered paintup as practice for my premium when it gets here. I am using TF's process with Floquil and Model master paints. Winsor and Newton masking fluid and the MOM, Singleseat's and TF's photos for reference. Will add more as I progress. The base color is Floquil Bright Silver buffed lightly with 0000 steel wool over Duplicolor Primer/Sealer. The silver was masked and Grimy Black and Engine Black were used around some of the scratches. Next came a lightened version of POG Green w/ Flat Gull Grey added 4:1 respectively. The lighter POG was masked and straight POG applied. No weathering has been applied yet. I will probably paint the upper cheeks first to compare the contrast before weathering the lower cheeks.

very nice !
I want to see more of this as it seems promising !
Why did you choose to begin with the lower cheeks ? is it just a practical choice or anything else ?

Smaller area with a lot of detail. Also easier to mask later when doing the upper cheeks. If you mess it up it is easier to repair than a larger area like the dome. The upper cheeks have been painted black. Brunswick Green oversprayed w/ Krylon Navy Blue which I spray into a small container and apply with an airbrush. A lot more control this way. Still need to add the POG area on right upper cheek per reference photos. Will move on to the dome next. A lot going on there.

I was able to get the dome damage and rear panels laid in. I just thought the ESB was difficult. The ROTJ has such randomness and wide expanses of damage that have to be accounted for. That and the multiple masks of the silver layer with the dark grey areas are hard to get just right. This was accomplished with Bright Silver and misting with Grimy Black where appropriate. The back was ColorPlace Green applied with an airbrush. It still needs to be wire wooled and clear coated. I will probably wait to weather the dome and back after I get the mandibles masked and painted. I completed the weathering on the lower left cheek matching the MOM and Heilman photos as much as I could. Was finally able to get a camera setting to give an accurate color rendering indoors. I will keep you posted.

SD68,

When I first began lurking here on TDH I used to look at your buildup thread of this helmet. It made me want to make my own helmet... now I've got a new FPH too! Great job with the painting of this helmet and thanks for the inspiration!

Got the red applied. Once again masking the Bright Silver and then misting with Floquil Engine Black this time while also pre-shading certain areas. Reapplied mask on misted areas per reference mainly Heilman and then sprayed Floquil Caboose. Next up will be the back grey keyslot area and killstripes along with the forehead arrows. Then comes the weathering with the blackening of the ears and misting of greys and browns. I was able to get some outdoor photos this time also.

Looking really good!
So are you just masking off the large areas you don't want to hit with paint with masking tape?
Yes, I will tape off the larger areas with masking tape and paper towels as I do each section. I was also able to mask and paint the killstripes today. Will post photos tomorrow.

Was able to complete the left ear and killstripes. I also completed the keyslot area and added the MQ1 casting along with painting the arrows. I used ATSF Red for the right arrow and Krylon Navy Blue for the left. For the killstripes I used Reefer Orange, masking the damage with masking fluid and laying out the stripes w/ strips of masking tape. The left ear damage was masked with masking fluid and misted in the patterns of the Heilman photos w/ Engine Black. Masking was removed and fine scratches put in with a mechanical pencil. The keyslot area was masked and painted w/ SP Lark Dark Grey and fine scratches added w/ the mechanical pencil. Will move on to completing the right ear this week.

Was able to get the right ear and stalk completed this weekend. Floquil Bright Silver base coat, edges masked and then misted with Floquil Engine Black. Mechanical pencil used for smaller scratches and wire wool used for blending and minute scratch weathering. Next up is weathering the main helmet and visor installation.
