Aluminum ears........

These are NOT cold cast and were made for my "DP 95".
I was having some problems making these when one of my co-workers said......STOP SWEARING and let me see that .

So that being said, I can NOT take credit for these.

:thumbup"Co-worker":thumbup

We looked at the MOM pics and made some size changes to the "DP" measurements to make them more to my liking. So yes, the aluminum one is a little WIDER that the one on the "DP".

Yes, They are machined aluminum. The one that still has the mill marks on it has a few "whoopsies" on it, one does not have the top milled, but the one that is done and ready to go has been sandblasted but still needs scuffed and weathered for the ROTJ job.

I know the paint blows on the DP. Its a pre "anal" paint job .

So, what do you think so far ?
And yes, we are making the other side also.

-Tim-

BTW.....ALL of the dimentions can be changed with the "PROPER" permission to fit other helmets, and ONLY from the "MAKER".

PS you skills and work is that of an ole' World Mastercratsman. I continue to be amazed at what are you going to come up with next-well done. BTW do you have any that would fit a Sgt Fang, that I am preparing to tackle in the next couple of weeks?
Thanks, and sure wish you could turn me out a set for the inside center piece of the rocket motor thrust cones (The "X"). Already have the outboard thrusters you made, and would love to complete the aluminum dress-up of the JP.

Tim, your attention to detail preceeds you as usual.

With all due respect to Tim and his co-worker's efforts, the official position of Rogue Studios and myself is that the dimensions of our previously released resin ears not be duplicated in whole or in part. We didn't profit from it and we don't feel it would be ethical for others to find profit from our hard work as well. We appreciate the caveat PS'B.

Not intended to threadjack, but the RS aluminum ear photo comparison below is only meant to solidify our position seeking fair treatment. DL44, I guess this makes the second set. Good luck all.

Very well put and understood.

As per my first post, these are for a "DP 95".
The ONLY way to get these for another helmet is to have permission from the "Maker" of said helmet.

That being said, "Rouge Studios" and "Single Seats" ear dimensions will not be copied.

They are a long way off from being available anyway as the right ear parts have yet to be finished.
I was just way to pumped to hold back .

Justin,

I think Chris was referring to this statement by Tim

BTW.....ALL of the dimentions can be changed with the "PROPER" permission to fit other helmets, and ONLY from the "MAKER".
He was just pointing out that the RS ears would not be on the list of allowed "dimension changes".

I didn't know you asked back then, and that question might not have been noticed by everyone. I went back and reviewed some old posts, so I'm up to speed now.

If the intense challenges that Tim has already faced (mentioned above) are any indication of what's to come in this project, I have good reason to be sensitive about my own work. Machined aluminum ears are no easy feat *and I should add that I'm sure Tim is up to the task (after having handled his previous work) to make clear that I'm a PS'B aluminum fan myself.

I think we can all agree that Tim is a great and very talented guy. He would never do anything against someone elses wishes. Heck, I think I know the guy pretty well. If he feels the slightest pressure, good or bad, he will say nope, sorry not gonna do it. I know it sounded like it is an interest thread. But to be safe, why not treat it as someone who is showing off the work they helped make? When and if a true interest thread comes up, post in that. But my thoughts.

This is not pointed at anyone, I want to make that clear. I have no disrespect for anyone. Hope it didnt come across differently.

Oh, absolutely. I just want to make clear to everyone that I posted because we're simply wanting to be excluded from the list of possible dimensions that Tim makes. That's all. Just like Delta75 said above. Nothing bad, not showing off, not disgruntled. It's all good. Carry on. Turn those metal ears!

There is not and will not be a "List".....you have nothing to worry about, SingleSeat.
Oh, and don't you mean " MILL those ALUMINUM ears" .

I don't blame you for posting what you did.

If I am given permission from someone who makes helmets, then they will be available for that helmet from said maker.

Nuff said.....please don't make this a dark thread. I am trying to make some KILLER parts that EVERYONE can get there hands on.

Now on to the right side. Again, this is for my "DP 95". Fresh off the machine, no buffing or clean up.
Still need to finish the two top pices.

Ok,
First off, I AM NOT seeking out ANY helmet makers myself to PROFIT off of there work.

All I want to do is help people out and allow them to have a killer set of ears for their helmet.

When and if you guys ask the person that made you helmet if its cool, you MUST tell them that YOU are wanting this done....not me.

Also, if someone goes to the person that made their helmet and asks them if "I" being "psberetta" can make ears to fit the helmet that they "MADE" or whatever you want to call it, then the person asking needs to tell the "maker" that "I" am not wanting to " COPY " their resin ears that they "made". I want to make a set that will fit it not a recast.

If I get another PM forwarded to me that says " So this guy wants to copy my resin ears".......I will pay my buddy for his time and call this off .

Wow. Sorry to hear your getting bad PMs. Sounds like there might be a few jerks out there about this.

Once again the ugly recast word gets thrown out there. If somebody is trying to make something that only makes an existing product better, why can't we all just get along?

And why can't people realize that its impossible to "recast" something from a milled aluminum block?

Sorry PSB about assuming that you were contacting the helmet makers. PM me and let me know if Sarge has Pm'd you. If not I'll get in contact with him and see whats up.

Thanks

Re: Aluminum ears........

Everyone out to lighten up and get off of Tim's case. Here it is one of the finest Fett craftsmen in the World, and you are giving him grief over a term called re-casting. American Heritage Dictionary defines recasting as "to mold again, re-fashion, remodel". Please don't utilize this term(recast) when something is being "refashioned", ie Tims work, to fit your particular needs and create an improvement over ones commonly used ir availble(ie,ears). He is not doing a "duplicate", ie defined as again in the American Heritgage as "identical copy, to make twofold".
So maybe when we are making new items in an entirely new medium, ie molded plastic/fiberglass and converting to metal, we can re-consider it in its correct definition and terminology. I mean if you want to get crazy about this can't you say all the metal flamethrowers, darts, viewfinders, stalks are then re-cast, or are they really "improvements" of ones commonly availble . Just improving or "plusing" an item would be more like it. So Tim if you want I'll take a set of metal ears to "improve my bucket" any time you want. Just a thought

Wow, some people...

Whoever's PMing you needs to lighten up. Recasting or copying usually entails someone copying another's work, skipping the hard parts, and making a few quick bucks, most of the time with shoddy products.

What Tim (or the guy who's milling them) is doing is creating them from SCRATCH. There is no "recasting" being done. All the hard work is still put on the shoulder's of the person milling them. There are no short cuts to take. And Tim's not out for a quick buck, he'll be offering them at as low a cost as possible, so that everyone can have these. And don't get me started on the quality and craftsmenship. If you've ever recieved a PSB aluminum piece, you'll know that he doesn't skimp. So you can rest assured these will be the best quality possible.

Hopefully this can still happen, as I'd love to see these ears on all the great helmets out there.

-Chris

Well, it's unfortunate, but this type of thing happens all the time behind the scene's in PM...and has also happened to me too in the last few days ....?? yea go figure??

But this type of thing shouldn't stop Tim, or anyone for that matter, from making a product that everyone can benifit from if that person so desires....As long as it's his own work, or Tim gets the permisson from the maker. Then to me he's covered all his basis....heck what else is there after that?
NO ONE should be "Bullied" because they've made an assumption and don't have all the facts first.

So I say PRESS ON TIM!!!...you are a great asset to this board, and your work speaks for itself....a true artist.:thumbup
I for one appreciate all that you've done for us Fett-heads...you've helped me out tremendously in my quest.
Heck isn't that what this is all about in the end?? Helping eachother??....................well, for most anyway.

You da man TIM!:thumbup.....I for one can't wait to see what else you have instore for us...whatever it is, count me in bro!!

Well said Spidey!

I too can attest to the fact that my Boba wouldn't be any where close to what it is with out all the additional quality pieces that Tim has produced! Especially when doing the ESB version, I mean, psberretta's flame thrower unit, Good Lord, GOOD NIGHT!!! All the additon of the quailty machined aluminum pieces just adds to the overall impression of the suit and help suspending disbelief that your not actually Boba! So Tim, YES, KEEP ON, PUSHIN' ON and KEEP SEEKING THAT HIGHER GROUND and please put me down for a future set of I what I know will be...

OK guys, Moderator hat on here...

Leave this thread to what it was made for. Psberetta has made it clear that he will not copy anyone's ears who doesn't give him permission to do so and he has also said that he understands why SS mentioned the RS ears. There is no need to continue this senseless back and forth over it and there is no need to derail innocent threads such as this one.

Thank you.

has anyone contacted sgt fang or marrow sun about getting the OK to do ears for their buckets?

i'm assuming that they are close enough in size that what works on one would work on the other as well.

I PM'd and emailed Sarge. Here is the body of it for those interested....

Sarge,

I don't know if you've seen them or not, but psberetta on TDH has made some incredible aluminum ears for his DP Fett helmet. He has offered to make them available in different sizes, but not without the express OK from the various helmet makers.

I was wanting to PM you and see if it would be okay with you if he made ears using the necessary sizes for your mystery helmet. I've heard that he has gotten some PMs from other people that have been less than "complimentary" about the thought of making ear pieces sized for their helmets.

I think that these are awesome looking and am sure that they would be a perfect compliment to your now legendary helmet.

These are not going to be cast in any way. They are 100% machined pieces. So the recasting issue should not be an "issue" at all really. The only thing that might be an issue is that he will need to use measurements to make them so that they will fit the MH.

I know, just from his showoff thread about them, that several people would really look forward to getting ones sized for your bucket. Please PM me and I will be more than happy to forward your response to PSB and let him know your feelings on this. He has requested that if we want a certain helmet makers "go ahead" that we contact them ourselves as he has said that he will not solicit the helmet makers approval. This first set is one that he has made for himself, but he has very graciously offered to make more in various sizes, but only with approval from the helmet producers.

Thanks in advance for your answer!

Re: Aluminum ears........

Ok guys, the verdict is in....

The first thing I need to get out there is the fact that these are a pain .
There will be five parts included if these things are indeed an interest to you peeps. Left ear, lower right ear, the two upper right pices and the RF stalk, all machined aluminum.

The problem is the time it takes the set-up and run them. There are thirteen different flips and flops so to speak in making a set of all five parts. That equals out to be (with run time included) 2 hours and 45 mins. a set .
You don't just load a chunk of aluminum in an machine and press a button like a monkey and walk away on these bad boys......

It does not matter what hemet these are made for. The best price I can do on a set is $250.00 shipped. That is me breaking even after shipping. The cool part about it is I will get to work on them on the clock.

Anyway, that being said, these can and if enough people are still wanting a set, will be offered. I NEED at least TEN people to commit and I do mean COMMIT....other wise this will come out of my pocket.

Its alot of cash to plop down on a set of "ears" for a helmet, but I can tell you this, they will be the last set you will need.

Need feed back.....

Hey Tim,

Well, I've got every other machined aluminum piece you've done for my ESB, so count me interested!!! I just wouldn't feel right if I didn't have these too!

My two cents of input would be to add counter sunk thread attachments for mounting the ears, who knows, you might even be thinking that already! Also, very cool, that your adding the aluminum stalk as part of the package, no worries over fit-ment, but could the stalk or will the stalk be hollow in order to run wires down from the range finder?

THX!!!

GBH,
The ears have threaded holes in the back already .
As for the RF coming already drilled...I will check to see if I can find a drill thats long enough.

THX, for the input

Heres some pics for you as well as a nice one of the complete right ear.

Beautiful Work!!!

What about adding three attachment points to the Left Ear - Top, Mid, Bottom. That top portion of that ear cap many times wants to pop away from the flat of the helmet, might just be a better control of drawing it in closer, at least that's what I did with my BKBT Jango helmet and MS 1 Boba helmet.

Just one more thing...

Obviously on the top portion of the Right Ear Cap with the notch for stalk being in the center, the attachment point can't be moved, but could the one on the bottom portion be centered? That way there would be an even amount of tention being placed on at least a portion of that piece, otherwise as you tighten it, the front edge might want to lift away from the helmet.

Ok, I'm done now!

If I may suggest, could you possibly put the bottom threads at each bottom corner? That way the connection would be really solid and balanced.

P.S. This stuff is AWESOME!

I can change the location but I don't want to add more holes. That adds more time in the long run. It adds up.

Plus with the angled sides of the ears, you can't go to deep or you will pop out of the front .

I think $250 is a steal of a deal dude. Those with any fanmade kit, this is the way to push your helmet to the limit. I think if you want a truly accurate helmet, this is a no brainier. We all dropped $250ish for our gaunt missile so a 4 piece set of metal ears is the bargain of the century.

What helmets will these be available for?

I know there was some discussion about this before but $250 is a tad much for me to spend on my old DP'95 when I have a much better bucket that could make use of these.

I have sold a set of these to ASOK.

He has my permission to do whatever he wants with them including molding them up to make copys.

Sorry to bring this thread back from the dead but I want everyone to know that ASOK will do no wrong by offering these up.
