AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

I've gotten several requests for a list of the colors I use on the buckets I paint since I use spraypaints instead of an airbrush, so here goes:

NOTE: Valspar colors can be found at Lowes. I have also included the paint # after the paints that had them listed on the label.

    ESB HELMET COLORS

    SPRAY PAINTS

Dome and Lower Cheeks- Rustoleum Spruce Green

Upper Cheeks- Any Flat Black spray paint misted lightly with Rustoleum Spruce Green

Mandibles, Visor, and Keyslot Area-**NEW COLOR** Rustoleum Satin Cabernet oversprayed with Krylon Ruddy Brown Primer.

Back of helmet-You can go two routes with this depending on if you prefer the blue/green back or green/blue back
blue/green back-base coat of Krylon Navy Blue misted over with Krylon Hunter Green Satin
green/blue back-base coat of Krylon Hunter Green Satin misted over with Krylon Navy Blue

Killstripes-**NEW COLOR(NOT PICTURED YET)** Bahama Yellow (This is a Chrysler automotive color that I had custom mixed locally at an Auto Paint Store. It is a mustardy yellow with the right amount of brown undertone. [I didn't even know they could do that with spray paints.])

Light Green Scratches under Killstripes- Apple Barrel Colors 'Wedgewood Green' (20530) This can be found in the craft section of Walmart. It is an acrylic paint and has to REALLY be thinned down before using.

    Left Ear-Rustoleum Spruce Green

Right Ear-Krylon Ultra Flat Camouflage Khaki

Tan Scratches on Back of Helmet-Krylon Ultra Flat Camouflage Khaki

    BOTTLE PAINTS USED
These are the paints I brush onto the helmet

Grey Scratches on Green Parts of helmet- Pollyscale SP Lark Dark Grey

Grey Scratches on Red Parts of helmet- Pollyscale SP Lark Dark Grey with two drops of white mixed in to the 1/2 oz bottle. If using the 1 oz bottle mix 4 drops of white.

Dark Red Scratches- Pollyscale PRR Maroon (per RS List)

Small Silver Scratches- Testors Model Master Silver

Paint Splatter Between Dent and Killstripes- Pollyscale Black Green

    ROTJ HELMET COLORS

    SPRAYPAINTS

Dome and Lower Cheeks- Krylon Italian Olive(3522)
This color is a Satin so it will require dullcoting.

Upper Cheeks- Krylon Navy Blue misted with Krylon Flat Black

Visor, Mandibles, Red Trim- Rustoleum Satin Cabernet

Helmet Back- ColorPlace (Walmart Brand) Kelly Green

    Keyslots- Krylon Grey Automotive Primer*
*Krylon makes three different shades of grey automotive primers. The medium grey is just called 'grey' on the label. The dark and light greys are labeled as such.

Left Ear-Rustoleum Satin Cabernet (For the outer edge of the earpiece) and Rustoleum Aluminum (V7715).

    Right Ear- Rustoleum Aluminum (V7715).

Killstripes- "New Color" Valspar 'Hacienda Tile' (Available at Lowe's)

    BOTTLE PAINTS USED

Dark Grey around scratches- Pollyscale SP Lark Dark Grey

Dark Red around Scratches- Pollyscale PRR Maroon

Light Green scratches on Lower cheeks- Apple Barrel Colors 'Wedgewood Green' (20530) This can be found in the craft section of Walmart. It is an acrylic paint and has to REALLY be thinned down before using.

Grime On Ears- Pollyscale Grimy Black

I am always on the look out for accurate spray alternatives so if you find one you think looks better, please post it here.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

The two helmets are a MS1 and a BKBT Jango I converted to a Boba. The picture is an optical illusion. From the angle I took it at, the BKBT helmet looks alot bigger because of its placement. The MS1 helmet is actually slightly taller, while the BKBT is bigger in diameter giving it a little more flared appearance. The thing I fell in love with about the BKBT helmet was the 'squintiness' of the visor. I know it's not screen accurate, but its a One of a Kind helmet and it's soooo Clint Eastwood. Here's a pic of the two helmets from a better angle, MS helmet on the left, BKBT on the right.

    Cool comparison pics!
Is the vertical part of the visor skinnier on the BKBT helmet as well? It looks that way. (Don't know too much about Jango helms)

Yeah it definitely is. And I like it. I never knew they could be graet boba helmets. This forum should be a sticky.

Yes, I have. I will amend the list at the top to include the ROTJ Colors also. Here's an example of the one I have painted.

    Here ya' go.

By the way, the color on the back of the helmet in the pics is NOT 'Kelly Green'. I found the Kelly Green color after I had painted this helmet and I feel that it (Kelly Green) is a more accurate representation of the color on the back of the film used helmet.

    Thanks,

    Paul

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

I have 2 quick noob questions. Before I begin, thank you AFFO$ for posting this list....I'm a teacher, and plan on using my upcoming spring break to begin my first Fett bucket.

My first question is, with spraypaints can i still use a masking solution and go with a layering technique? I like the idea of picking away the topical paint layer to reveal the chrome "damage" below, and then adding some of the greys on with a brush. My second question, is are these sprays pretty easy to find at places like Loews or Home Depot, or is it best to go to a Michaels or Hobby Lobby for this? I am hoping to do ESB style paint scheme.

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Musical Fett.... I was able to get a lot of the paints I needed at my local Wal-Mart! So, you should be able to get the pray paints fairly easy. As for the bottle paints like the PRR Maroon, or Lark Dark Gray, I'd suggest you hit up a hobby store like HobbyTown USA, or something simular in your area!

    Hope the info helps!

Yes you can use spray cans and masking fluid. That's what TK7602 just did on his MS3.

I just cruised by my Wallyworld at lunch today.

I did find some of the paints but mine only carried the sortta "primary" colors, for the ColorPlace brands. Nothing like "Kelly Green" just green, and the orange was a gloss which I don't know if that was right or not.

The Krylons they had but, the "Italian Olive" was only a "satin", didn't know if that was right as the burgundy listed is "satin."

The only Rustoleum Aluminum was call "Metalic Aluminum" so I didn't know if that was correct either. And they had nothing in the "American Accent" line. So I may head over to Home Depot and a few others.

I'm sorry I didn't post it above. The 'American Accents' colors can be found at Lowe's. The Italian Olive is a Satin. You have to hit it with a shot of Dullcote to knock the shine down. Same with the orange. Dullcote kills the shine. I will amend this at the top of the list.

    Hey FettFull
What's your secret misting techinque? When I used to do this with model kits it would wind up as tiny "speckles" of paint, is that correct or is there a better way or attachment used?

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

RatFett... that's interesting. My Wal-Mart had the Spruce Green, Hunter Green, Burgandy Satin there... The only real problem I had was trying to find that Antique Blue. I went to Home Depot, OSH, and even K-Mart to look... no luck. I ended up getting something called Midnight Blue. It was the closest thing to Antique Blue I could find.

I guess I should say that you will have to check your local hardware stores and stuff as well. I just assumed that if mine carried the colors, others should as well.

    sorry.

Well you got the East Bay covered.
I was referring to the Milpitas WM which is by my work. I can still hit my SJ one and the Mt. View one. If you found them there, I might still be in luck.

FYI, I'm doing the RoTJ bucket so I don't need either of those greens.

I mist over the base color while it is still wet. That minimizes the speckles in the blue/green mix. There will be some 'speckles' but this is usually only with the Dark Grey Primer and it ends up looking like grime on the bucket.

If you are having trouble finding the American Accents 'Antique Blue' any Dark Blue spray paint, such as 'Navy' will do. You can then adjust the darkness of the back with your Med. and Light grey primer mistings during the final weathering stage.

Ok, if I understand this correctly the misting technique is meant to appear more as "grime/dirt" specks, than a soft blend of color. Thanks!

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

Ok, so I went out and got most of the paints, and started with the base coat.
Being a complete noob with this, I purchased foolishly purchased one of the fiberglass buckets off eBay. Not a great helmet, but it'll do....hopefully.

Anyways, I started with the a base coat of Testors Chrome, and it appears that I went on a bit to thick, as there are some drip marks. Since this is an undercoat, can I just leave this? Or is it best to sand this completely off and try again? At this point, that wouldn't be the end of the world, but I would hate to get several colors down and have to start over.

Also, is it ok to spray some paint in a little cup and brush on some spots that I msised, or should I just spray more on?

    Thanks a lot in advance.

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

I would sand down any drips in the paint and paint over it. Remember, paint several THIN coats. I would also dullcote the 'chrome' spraypaint before you put your next coat on. And yeah, it's okay to spray some in a cup for touch up purposes. I do that all the time.

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

I would use at least a 500-600 grit sand paper. Something that won't leave big scratches in the paint because they will definitely show through the next layer of paint. Also, since you are painting the silver layer first, I assume you are going to paint this using the layering method. One thing you have to watch out for is the subsequent layers of paint sticking to your masking tape when you mask off the different areas for painting. I've found that the top layers of paint don't like to stick to the silver undercoat no matter how long you let them cure. Even the blue 'low tac' masking tape will still pull the paint off. What I had to do with the masking tape was stick it to the palm of my hand several times as well as to the comforter on my bed to really, really reduce the stickiness.

I got some at Michael's. I think that's a fairly big chain, isn't it? Any 'art supply' type store should sell it. Maybe Ben Franklin? Or Hobby Lobby?

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

Here's an update for those trying to find some of the paints listed.

Thanks to AFFO$'s detailed list of paints I was able to finally score all but one of the RoTJ paints listed. They were all found at Walmart as the ColoPlace brand is theirs. Don't be swayed by the shelf labels, the accurate color is on a small sticker on the can. The "Green Gloss" is actually the correct "Kelly Green."

On the downside the "American Accent" line from Rustoleum has been discontinued. My Walmart had a side aisle with closed out paints, there were a few of this line but none of the "Antique Blue" i needed. I've hit a few other stores with no luck. If anyone on the West Coast had any luck finding this line, please let me know where, or if anyone has an alternative brand of this blue, please post it.

*UPDATE: Well I checked the Rustoleum website and "Antique Blue" is not a color available in the American Accent line. If it's possible to get the number type listed on the can, maybe they've changed the name.

*UPDATE 2: It's been confirmed from an email I recieved from Rustoleum themselves that Antique Blue has been discontinued with no replacement color.

I just want to say thank you for researching and making this thread. I definitly agree it should be sticky. I just got back from Wal-Mart with my 20 dollars of spray paint and now I'll be ready to go once my helmet comes in the mail. Thanks again!

I would suggest drawing the scratches onto the helmet in pencil and then filling in with the appropriate paint color. That way you will have greater control over the size, spacing, and shape of the scuffs, scratches and dings. Use a pencil, that way if you mess up all you have to do is erase and start over.

Ok, I gave into pressure and started working on a ROTJ boba fett costume, and started with the bucket. Here is what the Helmet looks like using the paint scheme in this thread before weathering.

BTW; this is a DP 97 that I heated and molded into what you see here. I dont have pictures of what it looked like when I got it because I was in a hurry to justify my purchase.

You might want to hit the upper cheeks with some more black misting to kinda tone down the blue. Lookin' good so far.

If he does that now, won't it be too dark after the final misting?

I'm painting a helmet right now, and the blue looks just like that (maybe even a tad lighter), thats why I ask. I know that I tend to really blast my helmets during the final misting. This is gonna be my first blue cheek ROTJ though (just used plain old flat black last time), so I could use as many tips from the master as possible.

    Thanks in advance...

Keep in mind this is my first Boba helmet (when I joined this site it was to make Jango), and thus the first time I ever had to make a "dirty paint job". I went ahead and misted some black on the cheeks, than to make it dirty I used charchol from michlals, smeered it on, misted black paint, and then Dull coat (Krylon Matte finish) Here are the results, but I will say it looks better in person.

I don't think it will be too dark when you do the final misting if you go ahead and tone it down now. Plus if you look at the pic's of the ROTJ helmet on the Reference Disk, the upper cheeks have just a hint of blue showing through the black grime and weathering. From a distance they almost look black.

    ESB HELMET COLORS

Can I use ANY silver colored paint?
    Silver base coat-Rustoleum Aluminum (V7715)

Anyone use another yellow for this? i can't locate any.. AND how does the grey primer turn the yellow red?
Killstripes-Duplicolor School Bus Yellow(DA1663) *Mist the front six killstripes with Krylon Light Gray primer while you still have the killstripes masked off. This will give the back eight kill stripes a redder tint like on the film used helmet.

The can i bought is Khaki ..but to me it look like a light tan...is that right? does the silver undercoat make it the right color?
Right Ear-Krylon Ultra Flat Camouflage Khaki
Last one...Is this for the areas in the back that are a light yellow.
Tan Scratches on Back of Helmet-Krylon Ultra Flat Camouflage Khaki

i have the info but i'm second guessiing myself...
i just started buying cans. i want to get my helmet done for my wedding..

Yes you can use any silver.

As for the Schoolbus Yellow, have you tried looking at an autoparts store like Advance Autoparts. That's where I found mine.
The light grey spray paint on the front kill stripes lightens them up so that the back stripes appear to have a redder tone.

The camouflage khaki is for the 'light yellow' scratches on the back. Depending on the pics you look at sometimes the scratches look yellow and sometimes they look tan, the same color as the Rangefinder Ear.

Not to hijack this thread but..............this weekend at Celebration 4 I was able to see two buckets of AFFO$ work, and all I can say is it's OUTSTANDING! The colors and his detail skills are amazing. I was able to see the real ESB helmet at the event and AFFO$ work really compares to the original very well. Nice work.

Yes. They're the same color. The Satin version just refers to the finish type (satin). I believe the "regular" version is gloss, so you'll have to hit it with Dulcoat or some matte acrylic sealer from the craft department at Walmart to knock down the shine. Good luck!

Ok quick qustion.the hobby town usa here where i live has closed, so pollyscale pints are out.I just need to know what color in a rattlecan looks closest to lark grey.I plan on masking off the silver areas on the dome, and spraying the grey the masking off the outlines around the scratches.I thought maybe a dark flat grey would be good, but primer seems to rub off to easily, and finding a flat dark grey is a task.I am trying to avoid brushing on the grey as it looks to thick, when it is done.
as for the mandibles, I always do those topically, and I like to use rust red acrylic simply brushed on, rather than the burgundy spray.

Slight change to the list as far as the ESB colors go. We recently started carrying a brand of paints at Lowe's called Valspar. They have a color called 'Merlot' (pronounced MER-low) which looks alot closer to the screen used color than the Krylon Burgundy Satin. The Valspar Merlot has more of a brown undertone to it as opposed to the pink undertone in the Burgundy Satin. Here's a pic of it on my MSH2 without any weathering. Just finished putting on the base colors. Tomorrow I'll do the killstripes.

    Hey guys
Ive been racking my brain and my patience trying to get the base colour right for a fett helm i got a while ago. I have repainted it god knows how many times and have too many colours of green but still even with misting and mixing it doesnt come anywhere close. Just wondering if there are any irish fett heads that know where to find a good spray that matches the base? Unfortunately all the paints listed here cant be found in Dublin, well not by me anyways:P

    Cheers lads

*edit, not sure if i should have posted in this sticky or made a new thread*

    Hey Dark Jedi,
I have a helmet like that, that I'm repainting as a ROTJ. Get some gloss black and go over the area of the "T" visor that is false, it makes it look more like a full visor. Or just do what i'm doing cut it out and replace it. Way better visibility. Just a thought.. Otherwise looks good.

Yes, this is something I agree with because that lower half of the visor makes the whole thing look worse. It's like a huge mole on someone's face. The rest may look great, but all you see is that one hideous blemish. I'd highly recomend cutting off the fake visor part and getting a full visor.

Hi, I was wondering if you knew of any particular chain store that carried polly scale paints. Or, would most art supply stores carry them?

    Thank you,

    Timmer

Look in hobby shops around you. I doubt any art store would carry PS paints.

Re: AFFO$'s PAINT LIST FOR THE AIRBRUSH CHALLENGED

Great list! This is just what I need (or will need when I get to that point) to try my hand at painting the helmet once I finish "Cheapo Fett v0.02b". Now if I could just find a post like this one with a collection of all the different types of materials you folks are all using. Cheapo Fett is made of garbage, literally since I couldn't even find the thick cardboard stuff locally. I am building him out of the remains of three ring binders that were in the trash at work!

Is there a good collection anywhere of materials, sources, and general price info anywhere? A few searches only turned up antman's post which, while excellent, doesn't help me find that cardboard here in Ohio,or even in the US for that matter.

Search for "garbage can armor" or "trash can armor".. There are some great threads here for that. Also take a peek at the Mandalorian Mercenary site. Many folks there have unique ways of making their armor, etc.

I used this and just about every spray can I could find and IT turned out really well I think. I did use testor airbrush paints for the ear caps though.
