    AFFO$'s MS ESB Progress

Well, it's 22 degrees and snowing outside, so I figured it was time to paint another helmet. This is a MS1 that I have made some slight modifications to. I squared up the corners of the cheeks, and changed the angle of the vanes behind the ears to give it a more screen accurate look. I also did a little work on the dent to give it a more ESB appearance. For this project I have decided to go with the layered paint scheme with a slight twist. I have noticed in the threads where people are using this technique that the silver is the only layer that is masked off. Once this is done they go back to topically painting the greys and maroons once the base colors have been applied. For my little experiment here, I am goint to layer it all the way to the top, with the greys and maroons being applied before the final base coats. I am also following JFJr's lead from his thread and painting this one as a Film Accurate ESB paintscheme. I have a screen capture from the Cloud City Hallway Scene that show's a good shot of the helmet and the abscence of certain scratches that are on the helmet as it exists today. Here's some pics of the progress so far.

Oh, yeah...this helmet will be for sale upon it's completion

Looks like another winner in the works! I can't wait to see how yours turns out now that you're doing ESB movie-style. I'm also amazed you are able to trace your stencils out so precisely, mine were a bit rougher than that. You have some skills man!

I always wanted to do something like this, but I was always too scared that I would lose the detail of Helmet with ALL the layers....
I'm interested to see how it turns out.

Is that just a plain ball point pen you're tracing onto stencil medium? The technique looks like a winner for masking off the major silver scratch's.

Yes please explain what you are doing with the ball point pen. Man I have to get over to Corbin to get some tips from you and trick you into painting my helmet.

It's not a ballpoint pen. It's a mechanical pencil. After giving the helmet its silver base coat, I then dullcoated it. The dullcoat allows for the graphite in the pencil to adhere to the silver paint. This lets you trace your scratches without having to apply very much pressure. It also makes for easy erasing in the event you mess up. And believe me, I do PLENTY of that. Oh, and the templates I am using are simple pieces of paper cut to shape.

Hey Bro, im a little slow, I went to public school, so I dont understand how your doin this paint job. If you just started applyin the green why can we already see the silver underneath?

I masked off the 'catscratch' and the ding by the ear using Miracle Whip. I like this instead of mustard because it is oil based and won't dry like mustard does. Plus it's got a thicker consistency and lets you move it around as you need it and then stays put. After the paint has dried, just wipe it away.

Wow, a real layerd paintjob. Please take detailed pics of the damage so we can see the effect, as compared to topical. It looks great, keep it up!
