Accurizing the Mystery Helmet!

How much resin does it take to make a helmet?

Hmmm, never really thought about it. Let's see, 6 coats @ 7 oz. per coat, plus an extra 7 oz. for the RF topper and earpieces... 49 oz.

Anyone know how that converts out to pints and quarts and such? :confused

ok, I cheated and ran to Google

it looks like 2.612244897959183673...... helmet kits per gallon 8)

49oz = 0.3828473 gallons.

So you could get about 15-16 helmets out of 6 gallons. If my math is correct.

I think that a lot of Fett helmet-makers tend to overlook one thing when molding a Fett Bucket……the "RAISED EARS".
It’s the little extra lip that the ears sit on top of, on both sides.

I think this also helps give the Fett bucket that “FLARE” everyone talks about.(y)

The reason I say that is I’ve seen a lot of helmets up-close in my day....okay well pretty much ALL of them:lol: ….and the one helmet that seems to get it right, in my mind, is the MSH2.

Here’s what I mean……..(pics)

hope this helps.

:cheers

So Sarge, will you still offer the good ole helmets too after you make a better one?
You know, for people like me with no money or skills to play with?

I reccomend once the new molds are done to offer this in fiberglass. Why make it accurate... or more so then it is and not offer a fiberglass helemt. Thats what the screen used was.

Tamper with a casting, then you'll still have the original with the prepro routes in tact. Plus it would probably be easier to alter on a freshly cast piece as opposed to the original which has already been through a lot.

the dent is a major concern. the previous castings had very dulled dents compared to some of the other helmets out there.

Are you doing a one or two part mold for the next helmet?
Seem lines are also something to think about as the castings from the last run needed moderate cleanup to get rid of the line from the mold jacket

Do adress the dent but really all you want to do is sharpen it, I can tell by looking that you sanded it out and by doing that you dulled out the detail in it. Use as many reference photos as possible becase light can play tricks on you and make it seem duller then it is or sharper.

Are the arrows fixed so that they line up on your current helmets? I have one of the older ones and they are off a bit. Since no one has mentioned it I'm thinking you have fixed it.

If you need someone to purchase your first one of the new breed, please put on this list. Can't wait to spend a little time with one of your new buckets

I'm with evan4218, Jango's Kid, and superjedi...fiberglass please! Would it help if I mentioned that I have a birthday coming up, a generous girlfriend, and am in need of a bucket?
Can't wait to see how it turns out!!

man, would i love one of these!:love even though im saying this being a newbie and all, ur work is awesome and fiberglass would be great!!(y)

The raised "stripes" behind the ears- These were really rough on the original so I rebuilt the ends of them for the MH, but got them too angled. They need to be more squared off.

I'm having difficulty picturing what you mean by "raised stripes". Can someone explain this or post a photo that illustrates this "rough" aspect that needs squaring off?

Is this referring to the red raised visor platform?

CSMacLaren,
Take a look at the below pic.
The bottom of the "raised stripe" should be pretty much parallel with the bottom of the helmet, instead of angled upward like with his current helmet.

Hope that helps. :)

Thanks. I have a SgtFang on order, so correcting this raised stripe and the squaring of the cheeks are easy for me to do (that it until Sarge releases his next-gen tweaked helmet).

But don't you think that the stripe's angle is harmonious with the ridge of that ear piece?

Don't wanna see this thread slip away too soon! ;)
Sarge, you still planning on doing this? :love

Yup! just need to get the last of the board orders and eBay orders out of here. I'm down to 20 TOTAL now- Not much at all. :)

I want to get back to zeros orders and start with a clean slate. That way I can cast new stuff as the orders come in, and still have some free time to work on new things as well.

As far as fiberglass, I really, REALLY hate working with that stuff- it's over half a century old, it's inexact, it stinks, it's sticky, it's itchy, it gets everywhere... there HAS to be a modern material by now that's just or nearly as strong and not such a pain to work with. The new white urethane I tried from BCCProducts.com is pretty amazing except for it's high price. It's strong enough that we literally dropped, kicked and threw a helmet casting from it around the shop 10 - 12 times before it finally cracked. Also, it "acts" like injection molded styrene or hard vinyl- It's hard to explain, but it just doesn't "feel" like any urethane I've ever worked with. Also, it's flexible to a reasonable extent, and it plays nice with dremel tools. :)
