Accurate Fett ears- Pictures are up and payment info

Hey, in the course of making my helmet, myself (RS) and SS made an uber accurate set of Fett ears. These were copied from my helmet casting and completely reworked as a metal master to ensure crisp castings. Since no one has anything this accurate we plan on making these available to everyone. All of the holes are drilled in the right places and at the proper sizes there is even a cutout for the microswitch for the RF which is on the original. These will come complete with the proper screws and pins just like the real piece. Last pair of ears you'll ever need right off the real deal.

I will have pictures on Sunday to post of a set and we will be taking a pre-order and the reason for this is due to recasting. We left "tells" in places but you will never know it. If interested please post in here. These will be cast in lower shrinkage materials.

We want to pre-order 20 minimum but if it goes over you still make the list. $65 a set delivered and we will be taking paypal payments only for these. Once you pay you will have your ears in a matter of days. I will post that inforamtion with the pictures on Sunday.

    Regards,

    Lee

    Very cool!

Put me down for a set... any chance of getting these cast in cold-cast metal?

I can definitley ask about the cold cast Jon no problem. Also, on fit..they fit a real helmet that's about all of the guarantees I can make but I'm sure the Fang, and Mystery stuff should be fine with these ears.

    Jango'd Kid..we'll work something out.

The original helmet used the microswitch for the rangefinder Must be a hollow stalk too. Wow, learn something new everyday. Now I feel even better going that direction with my circuit.

Oh! One other thought or question I had was, what are the dimensions of the ear pieces?

Ok, I asked but he is not wanting to do these in cold cast due some issues with working the material and keeping cost down. Sorry about that. Very possible in the future I might be able to work up machined sets but they are expensive and right now I wanted to get these out in a cost effective and quick turn around medium.

I can confirm that, yes, they will fit on a Fang or MS cast perfectly. And, yes, they will blow you away with crispness.

I should say more accurately that they fit by length and width, but you will have to re-work the upper RF-ear arc on the MS or SgtFang helmet to make the right fit. Unknown as to fit on BM, SGB, other mystery casts, or MSH helmets.

Sheesh guys, relax. I'm just saying I can't guarantee they would work with the MSH. I don't have an MSH sitting in front of me, so that's the only reason why I can't say they'd work for sure, but I'd bet they'd be ok and certainly better than what's on the MSH variety as it is. I'll get back to you on size.

However, we're talking about resin casts here....just so we don't get anyone's hopes up of having machined metal ears.

Pics will come as soon as the first sets pop out of the molds.

If you priced out having the ears machined ACCURATELY you would faint. Usually there is a minimum order you also ahve to enter the measurements into CAD or similar program running it on old machine or CNC which takes 7 changes to get one ear complete. Approximately $6000-$8000 for 10 sets and that's with a good buddy giving you a price cut.

I think the alternative would be diecast however I know nothing about it.

Lee, if you can pm me measurments of the measurments or trace the ears onto paper and email me the scan... I have a MSH sitting in my office and I can awnser that question... I also have a MLC2, a TF, a Sgn Fang, a MS2, and access to a MSH2 and a MS3. I can clear what it fits on and how much if any mods need to be made.

Unfortunately they are small for the MSH-1. Also hit me with dim specifics you folks need just some basics so you can determine if it'll fit. I'm pretty sure they will fit the MSH2 but I think those were slightly bigger too. Just a quick measure the width of the Rf base ear plate is around 1 3/4". Well hopefully everyone understands why I have been in a hole lately and me and SS have been busy so I hope these are a good offering to the plate of things to come....Jet Pack.

I'd say ideal for MS and Sgt Fang helmets....

I just finished measuring the MS and Sgt Fang.

On the left ear of an MS1 or Sgt Fang (and I see no reason to believe other MS's would be different), the total ear space available is around 140 mm. This will fit correctly with the left ear piece.

On the right ear, if you have around 165 mm available in height on your helmet ear (or you can make that much available with putty, etc), you should be right in the ball park. The only variable here being how far apart you choose to place the top RF ear from the bottom RF ear.

As far as width goes, upon receipt, you might be looking at only a few mm's difference from existing ear casts, so it matters very little. Buy them and you won't regret it.

Conclusion. Bobamakers': your ears are cast onto the helmet, so let me know how that goes... MSH's and others: measure your helmets and join in on the fun if they work for you.

(these numbers are measurements of the helmets, not of the ears)

My 2 cents is this is a great opportunity to MOD your helmet to have an accurate set of earcaps. I am very excited. Payment sent by the way!

What I will do when I get my set is take pics with all the helmets I listed and make a pdf with measurement marks that I will send you as a FAQ for the ears. That way if folks have questions about if it will fit, how close it will be ect. You can just toss them the FAQ PDF and your done. It will also be fun to see who got cloesest to the real size.

Hey Lee! First off, it's good to see ya back here!
I am very interested in a set of these, but I have a couple questions.
I pulled out an old progress pic of mine to show what my concern is.
Not sure if I'm the only one with this issue, but the upper part of my right earcap is molded onto my fiberglass helmet. I'm not worried about removing it, but I still am not sure of what "helmet" I actually own. Can you tell by the pic which helmet I have, and if these caps will work on it?

    Thanks!

That looks to be a SgFang or possibly a MS1... I only say that because

I can tell by the ear cap having signs of the servo track. Since its a mystery helmet you should need only minor mods to your right ear cap using sanding and bodo to make it work.

I'm not Lee, but I'm going to second the vote for an MS or Fang mystery for these reasons-->

    1. The bend in the right mandible
    2. The angled lower back corner of the ear area
    3. The rounded cheek corner
    4. The short RF ear cap

Is it too late to be added to the list for the earcaps?

You might have to wait a while to see if they wil work with a Boba Maker as most of us havent gotten our ears yet. I am sure there will be many threads on converting all types of buckets to use these ears. Just hang tight.

I am not sure how long Lee is planning on making these availible so you might want to pick up a set regardless. If they dont work you could just resell them later.

Not 100% sure, but ss narrowed it down to an MS or SgtFang. I have an old progress pic posted early on in this thread.

Is it made of resin or fiberglass? ...for pure probability's sake...

Fiberglass. Very smooth and clean cast right out of the box.

Probabilities are that it's an MS1 or some recast thereof. I haven't been around long enough to know if Sarge ever did fiberglass. Maybe the vets can chime in. Either way, it's a mystery, so the ears working on it so well is no surprise...good luck!

Don't know if this will help, but here is another early pic before I primed it. The ear caps were a part of it, along with the rf , stalk and mq-1 board. All the attachments parts were resin.

I know Sarge made a fiberglass one that he sold to TrooperExpert, who I believe later sold it to FP.

I was confused! What I did was the layered paint technique. I primed everything, base coated all the armor in silver then masked the damaged areas before airbrushing on the green. When I had all the armor base colored in silver, I almost went ahead and did a Jango, but I am more a fan of the original trilogy, and Boba has always been one of my favorites.

    Re: Accurate Fett ears- Finally

Lee and SS, steller work, got my ears today and I am impressed. Very good castings. I also like the resin you used... strong and not brittle! Are the tiny cylenders that attach the outer rf earcap to the base magnetic? Very cool attachement!

What I will do to help folks figure out if they can use these on there helmet is I will post a pdf that can be printed that has 1/1 outer shape of the earcaps and this way you can just print, cut out and tape the stencil to your bucket... if it fits you have awnsered your own question! How bout that... and as folks come forward saying it dose or dost fit I will compile a list of what exactly it works with and how well.

    Re: Accurate Fett ears- Finally

That's nearer to the attachment method we think was used on the original prop. The pins go in the holes and mate the inner and outer RF ear caps, but I seriously doubt magnets were used on the original helmet. The pins are more understandable on the real helmet's machined ears.

I always like to see the insides of a prop duplicated as much as the outside, even if they are never seen. Glad you like 'em!

Here is the promised stencil. Please note that this is only for use in seeing if they will work for your helmet. Just print, cut out and tape to your bucket! You must print them at 100% of size to work.

Thanks for popping that stencil up that will be a huge help for everyone. Also the edges might be a little sharp but that is where your weathering skills come in we chose to make them as if new and you wear them down to the point you like.

I've been working crazy hours this week, so didn't have time to post that I got mine 2 days ago.
    Thanks for doing these!

Now what you could do is make an "ear display system" so people can show off these excellent ears!
Something that's. . . oh, I dunno. . . kind of helmet-shaped or something? You must have something sitting around that's helmet-shaped that you could mold up?? Hmmm??? Hmmm???

    Re: Accurate Fett ears- Finally

The MSH1 is not a mystery helmet nor is it close to the correct size, its over sized in every way it can be. If you place the left ear on it you will notice it dosnt cover the entire area, infact its shot by 1 inch.

The MS helmets were made in a similar fassion to the MSH but the sculpt was closer to the size of the real deal so the ears fit great.

    Re: Accurate Fett ears- Finally

The Sarge did indeed work unusualy well with the ears. And by well, I think they match almost flawlessly. From what I understand the MS helmets were builds on a DP95. But the ears do fit quite well on the MS helmets as well. I was suprised that they fit the MS2, but I think the main change on that was simply the dome.
