$35 Boba Helmet / Mini Fett Costume - PICS

This is my sons $25 Jango 2 piece that I'm using as a practice helmet. Lucky for me that he changed his mind to Boba. I get to do this one before I dive into the Sgt. Fang. At $25 for the helmet and $10 for the upgraded visor, I think that it was a pretty good buy.

I've never done anything like this before... No Bondo work, no detailed painting, nothing. I think its coming along pretty well considering. I know that its not totally accurate, but hey, its for a 4 year old.

I probably could have done a better job with it by building up that ear section and scratch building a new right side cap for it, but to be honest, I just didn't think it was gonna come out as well as it did. Plus, the dimensions are off on a bunch of other things as it is anyway.

Here are some pics, let me know what you guys think. I'm using AFFO$'s paint list, and as much of his technique as I can. He's been pretty helpful via PM's. Great guy.

In any case, feel free to give me some advice, opinions, tips, wisecracks, etc. I just wanna see where I stand with this... But be nice to the noob.

    Thanks,

    Shawn

Thanks for the nice words guys...

    -----------------

    Skirata,

You'd think from the pics, and how shoddy that it looks on the inside of the dent, that it'd be pretty weak right? Well, at one point I got so frustrated and so PO'd that I tried to put my finger through the dent... lol... All I did was end up stubbing my finger. The thing is solid. I don't know if thats the correct way to make a dent or not, but its definitely not going to budge. I say go for it.

Its Rustolium American Accents Midnight Blue (satin), misted with with Krylon Hunter Green (satin)... Per AFFO$'s list. I had to replace the American Accents Antique Blue with Midnight Blue though. The Antique Blue has been discontinued, so I've read.

    Thanks again, guys...

I'm gonna be at a stand still in progress for a while until my paints arrive at the hobby shop. They aren't colors that the shop stocks on a regular basis. I can't wait to get this thing sealed and dull coated so it stops looking like toy and more like a helmet.

Ebay... Search 'injection Jango' and a bunch should come up. I got it from a seller named cwgift. The visor is from rembrantenterprises (T-Visor.com) on ebay as well.

Yup... I was collecting the bounty on a ham sandwich at the time and figured "What the hey... I bet this would make for some nice masking fluid."... Because thats what everyone naturally thinks when eating ham sandwiches with mustard.

But yeah, its just plain old mustard. Theres a bunch of threads on here where folks use it...

Yup... And everything is pretty much freehanded. I'm drawing rough outlines directly on the helmet with a pen, and then just going to town with the brush. So far it hasn't bitten me in the arse... Knock on wood. Its not the best, but it looks like Boba to me.

    Awwwwwww.... Shucks.... /blush

I'm using mostly 00 and 000 brushes. Its really slow going; grey on top of silver, silver on top of grey, etc. I just wish I had some stencils, I'm really starting to hate painting.

Go to the user list, and look up AFettFullOfDollars, thats who's posts I'm using as a guide (in addition to the reference CD).

I don't feel right trying to explain it, cuz I'm still a newb at this and I'd hate to be responsible for giving misinformation. I've made TONS of mistakes on this helmet.

I used a two part Bondo that was hard as a rock in less than three minutes... I wouldn't suggest using the same kind that I used.

    EDIT-

Also, theres more than just the seam at the top that needs filled. Theres also some dents where the post/hole slots are. You can see them from the inside on the fifth pic at the top of the thread. On each side of the epoxy, there are molded tabs... Well, on the outside, those molded tabs are dents.

    Thanks.

Its a Sterilite trash can from Walmart... Same type from AFFO$'s thread. The curves were already there. I just taped the templates where I needed the curves, and then traced them with a Sharpie.

Still needs some heat gunning though. The back plate, shoulders, cod stuff, all still need to be formed better. I did a sample piece with the heat gun and it curved great, so there shouldn't be any problems once I get that far.

There were no knee armor templates in his PDF though... Anyone know off-hand where I should look to find them?

i was chewbacca for halloween one year. i think i remember the costume falling apart by the end of the night due to the cold and cheap material. how did you get the backpiece formed? i've been working on mine from a garbage can and am having a hard time forming it.

Hey what did you do between the last time you posted progress pics to this point? The green looks different (and better I might add) ... is it just a change in lighting, another coat of paint, weathering, ...... what? Kepp up the good work right there!

Hey, how old is that (what year did ya get it?) I wonder if it's considered vintage or not. If not, why not bust it outta the box ... it'd be cool to see what that looks like

Fanboy... I used a Wagner heat gun, and a big bowl of ice water. Heat it, form it, dip it, done.

Jimmy... Not sure what you mean. Thats just primer on the armor, and the helmet hasn't change. May just be the way the flash is, and isn't, picking things up.

    EDIT-

The helmet still needs the big scratch thats on the back right quarter, and it needs dull coated. Not sure if thats what you meant or not. Right now, the bucket is still glossy from the satin paints.

I did add the black/green grime to the front though. And I still need to do some work on the mandibles.

Heres what it currently looks like:

Must be the flash / lighting ... still looks really good!

Still have to paint around the right ear and weather the whole thing. The gold ear is REALLY gold, I wanna try to tone it down with the dull coat, and black pastel.

Ya got a shot of what the ear looks like right now? I see the lastest picture ya posted ... but it only shows the side of the ... I was hopin' to see what the face of the ear looked like before ya weathered it.

Added a couple of pics... Most of the costume should be wrapped up this week, so that'll give me about 13 days to make a poster board jet pack for it. Still need side pouches too.

There were a bunch on there in Sept. when I posted that... Searching just after Halloween probably isn't gonna turn up many results. Give 'em some time to restock, and I'm sure that they'll start popping up again.
