What's in a name?

If I see one more person call it a bantha skull I'm going to pass out haha. The decal on RotJ and other costumes of Boba's shoulder plates is a MYTHOSAUR. Not a BANTHA. It doesn't even look like a bantha, haha. Mythosaurs populated the planet of Mandalore, and the original Da Werda Verda or Taung or WHATEVER (warriors of shadow, and original mandalorians) hunted the mythosaur on the planet to extinction, as killing a mythosaur was the ultimate sign of a powerful warrior. So shame on you if you called it a bantha skull, haha. That's all, haha.

The old timers (people that have been here more than a few months) have always called it a Bantha Skull, and we probably always will.
We have been calling it that long before any of this Expanded universe drivel was spewed forth like so much diarrhea.
Back when Boba was just a Bounty hunter and not some cult member or "Mandalore"
Back before the nerds had any BS Werda Verda to pattern their pathetic little lives around.
Back before the Mando's ever disgraced the costume world with their "mythosaurs" painted on their Nerf blasters and rainbow colored trash can armor .
Back before all the ridiculous backstories and made up clans.
Back when costumers had to do research and *gasp* actually had to create their costumes as opposed to buying it off of the rack.
Now they can just come in here, buy anything they want, and spout off like they actually know something.

Yeah, we are old and stuck in our ways. But at least we earned the right to be wrong, even if it's just a name.

whoa whoa whoa, all this negativity, this is a joke, I'm kidding. This meant to be silly, not taken seriously. Please don't get so bent out of shape. :)

And all this hate for the mando mercs, I understand that they look a bit... okay, they're really silly looking, but that doesn't mean they're not worth a glance, some of their armor is really nice, I'm constantly looking on their threads looking for neat tips and tricks. They're not hindered by authenticity, which is why creativity is the name of the game there. I'm not a member or anything, but I still think they deserve at least a little respect. And they've brought lots of new blood into the costuming, so I think before we start bashing we can consider what good they've brought here, you know? Sorry if you're still mad, this is my favorite costuming board, I don't want to be a pain.

I knew what Nathan meant and I think he speaks for ALOT of people here really who probably wont speak up, cause his Boba suit isnt up to par with the Mandos :p (I had to)

i'm with nathan on that one... i call it "the fett skull" still, and always will. once upon a time there was no such thing as mandalorians or mythosaurs. just a cool looking dude with awesome armor.

Not exactly...

The Star Wars EU can be tossed aside at any point by a higher level of cannon. So far the only "official" Mandalorian anything is the Deathwatch from Clone Wars, and a bunch of pacifists. If the Clone Wars decides that something totally different happened, everything Traviss wrote goes in the dumpster. So officially speaking, there is no such thing as a Mythosaur until George Lucas decides to put one in the TV show or a movie.

But, I still call Pluto a planet too. It's part of being old. We get stubborn.

To me a Tyrannosaurus Rex never had plumage and Hicks did not die in the beginning of Alien 3. I do however occasionally call the skull a mythosaur but more often than not its a bantus skull or shoulder emblem.

I think the topic of discussion at the moment is so minuscule in the star wars universe I can't believe this post has gone on as long as it has, don't get me wrong I love the Fett and mandalorians alike but the mythosaur skull name is like you say tomato I say tamato it shouldn't cause such ill temper as it has

Hahaha, I can't wait to be old and stubborn. By which I mean I'm going to die when I'm 25 surrounded by drugs and explosions and killer robots.

On a serious note, I really hope if any more Star Wars movies come, they don't just squash EU, I really liked the comic books, and while I haven't read all of Karen Traviss's books, I know lots of Mando's out there are going to be quite butthurt. I just never want to see retcons on the level of Transformers fandom. Transformers fans are crazy. ._.

I think I remember a buddy of mine mentioning that Mandalorians were pacifists as well! The Fetts just happened to be a "bad egg" in the batch (correct me if I'm wrong :P) back before the clone wars and such established the Mandalorians as more of a warrior race.

That being said though, I don't really care too much. It may obscure cannon here and there but Mandalorians inspire a lot of good Mandos, Mando Mercs or what have you. Granted it's easier to make a custom mando less believable due to a lack of attention to detail, odd color schemes, half-baked parts due to rushing for a convention, (the list goes on for reason it does not work artistically) but that's part of the process! Your Fett can look one way, and then 1 or 2 repaints later or some upgraded parts, completely transforms it until something sticks (I have to say, there are some sick looking Mandos that give even Boba's armor a run for his money).

To any Mandos, Mando Mercs, or Star Wars fans who just want to put there own spin on something, thumbs up to you! You can learn a lot when you take a risk and do something different!

PS; I didn't know about mythosaurs, btw, so this is pretty interesting information for me! I use to think it might have even been a krayt dragon skull myself...

Lucas has to approve all of the star wars game knights of the old republic brought mandalorians to a reality regardless if they are canon or not

So it's not the skull of the creature the sandpeople ride about on ? :?

No, but seriously. I know Pluto's not a planet, but I still call it a planet. Because I'm used to it. And to **** people off if they start complaining about it. I won't just ignore poor little Pluto because some scientists suddenly found out that it's too small to be a planet.

And about the skull... I call it a Bantha because that's what I've been reading everywhere. And when I Googled pictures of 'bantha skull', that skull appeared. It also appeared on 'mythosaur skull', though... But yeah, I call it Bantha. It's easier to say than Mythosaur :P

That seems to be a general consensus on this board, from what I've seen here anyway. I just think there's some disparity between canon fans and EU fans, but also between costumers in general. Some people like to make it wild and crazy, and when a canon fan sees that, I can see the questions grinding away behind the eyes... "Why is the armor that color? Are they aligned with 'vague, virtually unknown faction' of Star Wars? And if they're not, what's with all the nerf weapons? How could they just slap it together and call it a costume? You have to take queues from the movies, so much aesthetic was built on old Army gear, and generally the base of most weapons is from another age, why would they disregard all of these subtle, but distinct pointers as to how to make a believable costume?" And then, excuse my french, but they lose their ****, bonkers. But we shouldn't hate them, rather I like to think of them as a breath of fresh air... mind you, the air smells of strawberries and sugar, and the air is blowing our canon capes into our faces... but they bring a certain amount of levity to the cons. Stop stressing, so many people can't see past the armor, but when you break it down we all love Star Wars. Isn't that enough?

I actually agree with you on that, they're all a little TOO matched, a little too flashy. I always thought small personal touches went way farther than crazy color schemes. What if, instead of being neon blue, that guy instead went with a flat grey, and a small personalized rangefinder? That'd be pretty cool, in my opinion.

I'm a mando merc I followed bobas color scheme with a few minor changes almost finished and it's great to not be a norm
