Are there any TDH'ers here who do Martial Arts?

Here's me after my 7 sec KO victory.

I've trained with Miguel Angel Torres(if you don't know him, then you don't follow MMA) and I train a lot with Braulio Corral and Jared "The Spider" McMahnn.

Dude 7 seconds!!?? Wow!!!(y):)

For me, Aikido since '99.. Before that, few years jiu jitsu. I would not recommend Aikido for weight loss, as Aikido is somewhat more philosophically oriented rather than physical. Teachings do vary from school to school, but there are many weapons used in Aikido, including sword (bokken), knife (tanto), short staff (jo, about four feet long). Those are the primary weapons that usually are taught. Still, the primary use of weapons is to complement the unarmed Aikido. You can still train hard, but probably would not lose much weight with Aikido. Does wonders to your mind though...

I've been using the apartment's workout room for losing weight. I've done a few youtube searches on some of these styles, and a friend says Aikido might be one of the best choices for me, or some of the other choices listed here.

Well. then I'd suggest that you'd at the very least try Aikido.
It really is nicely balanced martial art, with physical as well as philosophical aspects. It is not for everyone, though, and I do not mean that not everyone is up to it, but rather that not everyone is satisfied with it. Still, you need to make it clear to yourself, if you want to learn how to fight, or if you want to study martial art.
Many martial artists would like to compete at some time, like in Judo or Karate, but with Aikido philosophy, this is quite impossible. The Aikido techniques are QUITE valid, but the fundamental thought behind them is different from many other martial arts. A person who knows Aikido can defend himself, but it is not the way they are trained.
That is difficult for some. Each year, when beginner's classes are brought up, it is usual that only few continue to practice after a year. Even fewever continue forwards.. And this has absolutely NOTHING to do with the training.. Many just drop out for the lack of competition.. I myself have found that for me, this is the way to go. I might not be the best one, but it is mine for now.
You probably have seen Steven Seagal on some movies? He is fouth (IIFC) Dan black belt on Aikido, and while his technicues seem like hollywood magic, they are QUITE valid, working techniques that you need to study for years...
After a lifetime, who knows, another art may come to mind. I am fortunate in the fact that I can study other arts as well, even in my own dojo. The teachers do not mind, but rather encourage it.
Still, try it, and after a year or so, you might be surprised...

15 years of Kenpo here, from age 5 on, but it never leaves you mentally. Martial Arts are lifestyles as much as they are fighting technique. The thing about MMA (largely stemming from Bruce Lee and Jeet-Kun-Do philosophy) is that mixed means experience in several styles which takes a lot of training. My personal view is that it is best to begin with more of a focus. From there, you better understand the need for balance and grow.

Great point ShockWave, that's why we always tell the guys that want to fight in MMA to train with the gi first in bjj. Then once they know their way out of an armbar, a guilotine choke, and a triangle chock, they might be able to start training in a little MMA because if you don't know the basic escapes from those moves then barring a lucky KO, you will likely get tapped.

I still say Bjj is the best. All that "grab my arm", "no, my other arm" stuff has been proven inefficient in the past decade of MMA. I'm not saying nothing bad about Akido or whatever, martial arts are done for all kinds of reasons, many of which are not for fighting between two unarmed people who are both ready to fight.

I taught martial arts for almost 12 years. And I was in great shape. I got out of shape when I had knee and shoulder surgery a few years ago. I spent 6 months and got back in to shape last winter.

That being said two things are very good 'devices' for weight loss.
ABS eat right every time guide
p90x

Now I didnt do the p90x, but I used some of the exercises in it. It has a wide variety of exercises and options for people with varying physical shapes.

This is what I accomplished with 40 mins workout and the book 5 days a week. I highly recommend the book.

The book can be purchased on amazon for 3-6 dollars.

Just remember ultimately karate, p90x, the book, tae bo, whatever, are just tools. You have to be the crafter. You make the decision, and then its all over but the crying:)
