    May 1, 2008, 3:10 AM - Tell us your excuses..(comical purposes!) #1

This is for the large majority of members (such as myself) who love to spend money on their SW collectibles/props/treasure, despite their current financial situations.

I think its kind of funny trying to have to sort of "justify" it by making up some semi-logical excuse other then "you just wanted it," spending about 500 bucks on some prop or toy even.

For example, my very first excuse to sway my parents from this, is after I bought a helmet kit, my parents *thought* it was somewhat of a waste of money..so I simply replied,

"well, I know this buddy of mine, sits at the back of the school bus, selling weed or I think crack? Dosnt matter, Im sure I have enough cash for whatever he's selling... "

Got the most aggrivated look from them after that , but since, they havent really questioned it...that is until I decide to get something pricey. I admit, I can be somewhat of a compulsive buyer if the opportunity arrises.

Im interested to learn what other's have to say in their defense for such transactions, big or small. Im running out and need to learn a few more lol

Just wanted to add what my gf tells me all the time.."if we ever get married, we're going to live in a rinky-dink wood shack, surrounded by star wars toys the rest of our lives and no food.."

Here's what I say when the wife gives me "the look" :
It's part of a larger collection,
It was on sale only $500.00,
    They've stopped making them,
It's a limited edition only 2 million made.

"They normally cost 300 but I can get this for 250. So I'm saving 50"

    which was met with....

"Yeah but if you didn't buy it all, you'd save 250!!!!!!!!!!"

The official line with my wife is "they're investments".
Which is not exactly a lie!! Financial investments, maybe not, investments in my happiness, defintely.
Since I bought a Medicom Vader and sold it for a profit, she never questions anything I buy.

I nearly made a bad purchase recently and her sarcastic reply was "That was lucky, you nearly bought something completely useless"

Whenever I go to buy something online, I look over my shoulder to my wife, then remember I don't have a wife, then clicks 'Add to cart'

Just kidding, it's more like, looks at Mr Bank Balance, thinks "Two minute noodles aren't that bad" clicks -'Add to cart'

I just tell my wife that it will keep off the world of the warcraft for a while working on whatever my current project may be and then she goes for it.

I like to point out to my relatives that the price on these items, unless severely damaged, only appreciate in value. They roll their eyes, but at least it shuts them up about it while they think about those brand new gas guzzlers they all own.

"We all gotta spend our money on something." For some it's giant entertainment centers, or high-end computers. I was once criticized by a buddy of mine for wasting my money, just before he left for the casino.

I usually buy it without telling her, then share the excuse when a big box arrives on the doorstep: "Oh, I paid for it six months ago, it just took him this long to make it and send it out to me. That's the problem with all these fan-made kits." Therefore my money expense was back far enough that it doesn't matter in the HERE and NOW.

I probably shouldn't spend as much on this stuff as I do, though, so I understand her frustration.

My fellow garrison members ask if I am insane for spending that type of money on it, and I say that "This way I won't have to upgrade again!"

Once I had my father ask me what I spent on my Boba...after I told him, he said "Now you can't complain about what I spend on my Cars" (for clarification, he tends to buy these P.O.S. rusted old cars(real cars not toys) that are missing parts and are no more than things you would put in a junkyard, that he spends rediculous amounts of money on, which in turn sit and rot away for years because he does nothing with them). So I merely reply..."Well, at least I am doing something with my costumes" Talk about the pot calling the kettle black?

And when my mother asks..."I just say you don't wanna know" and she replies, "you're right!" But she agrees with at least I put my stuff to use when I buy things!

When people give me the look about my costuming hobby, I simply point out that some guys are into working on cars, other guys are sports nuts to the extreme, some people do drugs....I spend the same amount of money, but what I do makes me happy. Of course, not a whole lot of people living near me are into this stuff as much as I am. And since I put my Fett on a severely indefinite hold, my only costume project is from The Phantom of the Opera. You guys think you get weird looks for Fett? That's nothing!

Yeah, that is another excuse I use. I could be out there breaking laws, doing drugs or something that could get me into trouble. But instead I chose the path of spending money on costumes so I can go out and help out charities and fundraisers. With a little mischief conventions along the way!

I dont really have to deal with explaining to my boyfriend. He does the same thing. Though some of his purchases dont make sense, lol

ususally I have to convince myself I'm not wasting money. especially with 501st patches and stuff. I just tell myself, its better than smoking... and probably costs less lol.

I start off with "Its all for charity" what would Jesus do if he was in my position.

If that doesnt work then, "I swear this is the last one".

When Im really desperate "What ever it is I will do it, in exchange for this".

Because I want it.Thats the only excuse I need.and if you enjoy what you buy, then it is far from useless.
If your woman questions your stuff, then question why she needs 800 pairs of shoes or high end clothing.
If your friends question your buying habits remind them how much they spent in the bar the other night. Now that is useless.

When I bought my AFA graded NY Toy Fair Vader I told her that most of these figures where damaged and this one since it was put in its archival case was a great investment...She looked at me and said "It's only an investment if you plan on selling it!"
then I looked at her and said "Are you crazy!! I'm not ever selling this!"

You got that bag I gave you? 'cause its gonna be a long ride!"-C3P0

Wow hahah! My gf says the same thing! The worst part is, she's a Trekkie and thinks Star Wars is lame. -_-
She threatens to divide our future place of residence straight down the middle and have ST on one side, and SW on the other. My side would be way cooler tho.

    "HOUSEWAAAAAAAAAARRRRR!!!!!!"

Kick over a couch and use it as a bunker, lobbing Plush Jar Jar Bink's at her.. Downside is you will always lose, while you have only a few things that suck in the Star Wars universe, she can throw anything at you.. including nasty Klingon insults :P

I just buy and tell her I already had it in my collection. Funny thing is she has tons of clothes that were already "hangin in the closet".

mine's easy... i don't smoke, drink, do drugs, gamble, spend much on clothes...

my vices are props, costumes and computers.

the computers are part of my job, so there's a benefit there.

so really, this stuff is my only cost sink.
