TDH Scholarship fund

We've had several threads posted about scholarship funds in terms of "vote for me here or there." It just occurred to me last night that if we all kicked in 5-10 bucks here or there we could set up a nice scholarship fund for a worthy TDH member.

Now it would be left fully up to the voting public with MOD control to determine the winner but it would be great to further the school career or a design, art, engineering major....someone dedicated to the craft I suppose. Just a thought and curious what others think about this idea?

Rup,

This is certainly a very nice idea, but there are at least three reasons I don't think we will be able to do it at this time.

1) At the moment, TDH exists due to the generous donations of out members. In other words, the site is not self-sustaining. I don't think it would be appropriate to take the funds members have generously donated and send them elsewhere. Once we have reached a self-sustaining status, things will be different, but at this point, we have our hands out, and I don't think we can afford to give funds away while we are asking others to help fund us.
2) We could set up a seperate account for funds to go to a scholarship fund, however, with us recently having become a legal entity, I am not sure of the complications that might arise from a taxation perspective.
3) We do not allow voting here at TDH as we feel it polarizes people too much and also creates "winners" and "losers." We do not want to encourage these type of labels.
4) This may seem like a rude thing to say, but this also strays a long way from our intended purpose. It is a great idea, but I fear implementing a fund like this might encourage others to make requests of this kind and while we would love to help those in need, we are barely able to keep afloat and fund our own needs.

Your heart is clearly in the right place and your request is certainly understandable, but I simply don't feel TDH is the place for this type of thing.

Spoken like a true gentleman and sage like in its wisdom. You're right. Not a very good idea when applied to the real world problems it would likely create. Thanks for the reply and please delete the post as it makes me feel like a moron the more I think about it...LOL!

While there is something altruistic about what you’ve proposed the aforementioned legalities and fiscal ramifications would place this site in quite a precarious position since it isn’t exactly philanthropically equipped to handle awarding donated disbursements.

However there is already a fantastic system for federal student financial aid on the web that I personally vouch for and renew annual as a student called the FASFA. Grants, scholarships, work study programs and loans are all covered here and are an excellent means of getting supplemental or even complete financial backing for your intended college or university. A little patience, paperwork and perseverance a few weeks out of the year make a huge difference financially for materials, books and tuition so its worth putting in the time. :)

There was absolutely nothing "moronic" about your suggestion at all. It is very thoughtful and if we were a for-profit site, it is a suggestion we would take into serious consideration. You have nothing to feel bad for at all.

the boba fett scholarship...lol

it'd be awesome. but like The Dent said, there are too many complications and it could get out of hand really quickly as far as fairness and things

philanthropically

I gotta find a way to use this word in a conversation sometime. Awesome! :)
