    Oct 21, 2008, 8:56 AM - Sw Costumes?? #1

Hey I recently had a discussion with some of the guys in my local 501st and we got on the subject of wearing your 501st accepted costume to costume contests and if it is fair or not. We argued many points and it does seem a little unfair since we had to be so spot on to join the 501st but in the other hand, we spent a lot of money on them and would love to show them off and if it wins it is only a reward for the work. Basically they thought it was in bad taste as it is like buying the best store bought costume out there on the market (unless you made everythign yourself). I am wondering what other 501st members have to say on this topic. I wanted to enter my boba in a costume contest but am still up in the air about it. Opinions??

I don't see any problem with it. IMO, it is really no different than any other costume. We just chose to be as accurate as possible in our portrayal of the character. That accuracy comes at a price. All of the other participants of contest either made or bought their costume, so that puts you in the same boat as everyone else.

My question was whether is was allowed under the 501st charter to profit from the costume. Obviously we don't charge for appearances, but the costume contest question did come up. Is it ok to profit from the costume by winning a contest? The answer from some of the folks in my garrison was "yes". They compared it to entering a costume contest at a con, which people do on a frequent basis I guess.

    This is all just "IMHO".

In my opinion, you SHOULD be able to enter it and not feel "bad" about it. I wanted to enter mine as well at "wizard World" this year but opted out. They were lots of prizes and cash given out to lesser costumes. I kicked myself afterwards. I WILL be entering next year.
True, we spend ALOT of money on our Fett's for accuracy, and for that reason alone they SHOULD be entered. It's not just the $$, but also the time and care to put the entire thing together. Mine took (2) years, and I don't think many people invest that kind of time into their costumes like we do. And, if you can walk away with some extra cash for your efforts(which could be shared or donated, etc...), SO BE IT. You worked hard on it, and there's your reward. As long as you're not advertising yourself as "Mr 501st representative", you'r fine.

    Just MHO....

as long as you aren't using the 501st name in the contest, i don't see why yo shouldn't. but don't be surprised when you lose to a hot girl in a $20 schoolgirl costume :-/

As I'm not in the 501st (yet) my costume certainly isn't up to par with a lot your guys', but will (should) still beat the competition as far as creativity, time and money spent, and effort put into it.

IF I win the contest I will be in, and they ask me to tell about the costume I will probably give a shout out and thanks to all you guys here on TDH (not like anybody attending will know who or what I'm talking about) and describe my future goal of joining the 501st to do good and give back to those in need.
I don't see a thing wrong with that.

It'd be no different (but on a different size scale) than some girl entering her costume she made out of crime-scene tape. She bought the materials and assembled it herself by simply wrapping it around her privates to only conveniently conceal what would be considered indecent exposure and get away with it. If I win over her in regards to creativity and effort, then I would deserve it. Right? More or less, it's the same as buying the materials and putting it together yourself, just with much more effort and attention to detail.

The costume contest I will be in, I believe, will be two categories; sexiest, and best overall. In that case I hope to not have to worry about getting beat by a well-endowed, skimpy-dressed girl with a $10 costume.

I dunno dude - it takes some strategic placement of crime scene tape and a whole lot of embarrassing consequence should it not be thought through well enough. I say she deserves a good chance at winning

Not a 501st member either but I don't think there is anything wrong with it, I'd gladly accept prize money to help pay off some debts. God knows I put in enough time and effort.

I put in a search locally to see if there was any contests on Halloween, I'll be attending them all!!!!

And a lot of stickies and some serious box maintenance to make it look good. I've seen good ones, but that was the most whorish, least creative example I could think of. Point being, If I beat that in terms of creativity and time and effort put into my costume, it'd be a fair win. No?

Hah! Ok, now THAT I wouldn't feel bad about losing to. At least I'd get beat by something else SW related.

I've always wanted to wear mine to a costume contest, I was thinking about Creation Con's costume contest here in September every year. The grand prise is usually $500, granted I don't think I could be The Borg they have there, but my Boba should hold its place in line.

I would do it. My costume was built before I even knew of the 501st.

The only thing I've ever seen about Costume contests in the UK (and it's very limited experience and reading) was that the costumes had to be mainly hand made, so buying it all in wouldn't be allowed. They specifically mention buying costumes from fancy dress stores etc, but I would presume buying in the parts for a SW costume would amount to the same, unless you made most of it yourself (as a lot of people do for Fett outfits, but less likely to be the case, I presume, if you're making a TK)

I don't see being 501st approved making any difference to that though

    Just my 2p

I thought the same way. I put soo much into it why not show it off and maybe get a little something in return. I guess some people might have some problems with it for what ever reason. But I am still hopeing to have my Boba done by halloween so I can enter it, but we shall see.

there seems like no reason not to use your costume. It's not like you were given a suit of armor off the set... you created it yourself.

it's my experience that the guy dressed as austin powers always beats out the screen accurate boba or stormy so it shouldn't be too unfair. (or the hot girl in the $20 schoolgirl outfit respectfully)
i'm really starting to think that it's those guys that have funny or revealing costumes that need more serious competition, so it may not only be fair but necessary.
    ? maybe?

The key to winning costume contests this time of year is to find one that is judge determined and not by crowd. The cheering of the crowd always goes to the girl wearing the least amount of clothes, were as judges can at least look at a costume's merits. Just my 2cents.

if you work that hard on anything you should be able to join a costume contest.

This phrase is generally used to describe those hot chicks but I think it could be used for a Fett 'tume too... "If you got it, flaunt it."

I've gone out to bars in my Boba and entered costume contests and lost to the half naked women. It's filled with drunks cheering for skin and cleavage...

Like Mark said, you have to find one that actually judges with a judge... not crowd noise. Good luck!

    P.S.

As for the 501st's stance. It's your own costume, you paid for it... do what you want. Just don't attach the 501st's name to it in any way. You're just Joe Six Pack out to win a costume contest.

And hopefully more than one category. One for sexiest, then one for best overall, and then maybe most creative. Chances are better that way. Hope that's how mine goes.

So it seams to me that what we need to nail down the winning spot in the contest is a chick wearing a boba feet costume with little armor pasties covering her up and well boba already wears a thong so ...... hmmmm
