Super Nerdy - Jet Pack or Rocket Pack

I know a while back some people convinced me that Fett's backpack was a ROCKET PACK instead of a JET PACK because it lacks an air intake that is seen on a jet engine as opposed to a rocket engine which carries its own fuel and oxygen. The argument made logical sense at the time and ever since, I have been referring to the jet pack as a rocket pack. However, looking through the essential guide to weapons and technology, they refer to an intake system and miniture turbines... now I know all of that is made up but they did positively ID the parts to a JET engine, NOT a ROCKET. Looking over the pack itself, I wonder if the toothed ring, just below the rocket is supposed to be an air intake type structure... or probably the prop designers didn't think that far ahead, but I am not wavering again on whether this is a jet pack or a jet pack. Let the nerdiness begin... what do you think?

I've been calling it a Jet Pack since 1998, and continue to do so, even though it may technically be a rocket pack or whatever anybody else wants to call it. Old habit i guess, but when i say "jet pack" or JP, everybody knows what I'm talking about. If I call it a "rocket pack" or RP, sometimes folks go "what????" Its easier to just call it a Jet Pack" like we have for years IMO.

As far as the techincal side, or what it really is....Boy, I dunno???? LOL

Yeah I'm pretty much in the same boat. I've been calling it a jet pack my entire life and I'm not about to change that.

Besides, MC Chris calls them jets.

i'm in the jet pack house... not for any faux-technical reason, but just because that's what i've always called it :)

I too say Jet Pack
always have
There has been discussion on "other" forums about it being a jet pack.
I contend that the Jet Intake is at the bottom of the pack since the exhaust is through the thrusters. The fuel for the jets is contained in the 2 side tanks.

Perhaps we should rename it "Flightpack", since that covers both Rocket & Jet

Yeah. In retrospect, I think the push to go from jet pack to "rocket pack" was pushed by those with a a bit of a snob agenda to show how "the little ignorant people" were incorrectly referring to it... and I fell for right in line. Technically the pack is... a bunch of fiberglass and resin... and that is about it. So, jet pack it is.

I was dissapointed that George Lucas reffered to the Ligthsabers in Episode I to lazer swords. ***??

I know that makes sense, but we have always called them lightsabers.

I have always called it Jet Pack. Is interesting the design of the JP being the top an air intake. It's cool, really! (y)

Lucas didn't refer to them as a laser sword, Anakin only called it that because he was a little kid and didn't know the proper term. They are called lightsabers in every other movie, including Episode 2.

I make Jet Packs!

Jet Pack puts me in mind of That Rocketeer chap, not good.

The rocketeer actually had a jet pack since it ran on alcohol and oxygen from the atmosphere. The rocket pack/ jet pack name comes down to wether it caries oxidizer with it. Considering it is a prop I wouldn't dig into the issue too much as it is a technical term that is confused by the general public like mass and weight (i.e. people interchange kilogram and pound even though a kilogram is a unit of how much matter is in a substance and pound is a measurment of amount of matter multiplied by its acceleration.)

Yes, I am a rocket scientist.:D

Lets see what this smilie says, now move your mouse slowly over the picture:

:jet pack

:eek::eek::eek: It says JETPACK!

(Okay maybe that was a little stupid)

Nah, for me its just a jet pack with a rocket shaped thing on the top, made from fiberglass. And if I'm right Han Solo also said ''Jet Pack'' in one of the books I read some years ago.

during the making of one of the videos, George was talking to one of the prop guys and specificly told them that they were called a lazer sword.

I think George wanted to change it up a little bit, but it didnt work.

Ok back to this rocket pack.

Even the Quaker Oats Marketing folks called it the "JET-pack"

When ever I hear "Rocket Pack" I picture the "Rocket" at the top of the packet. I guess it could be a missile, but missile is a generic term, and can describe almost anything flying through the air. Is it possible that one name ( Jet pack)refers to the fact that this "backpack" is a mode of transport, and that the other ( Jet Pack) describes it as a weapon ?

I've called it a JP, RP, and backpack thingy, all depending on who I may be talking to.
