So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Getting all the paperwork done to go to MEPS, so after then send me to get probed, I'll be in the Army National Guard..
Still having trouble deciding when to go to basic though, either in August or next January.
As for my MOS, Im deciding between 11 Bravo, 19 Delta, and 21 Bravo.
I'm leaning towards Combat engineer, but since I'm doing the SMP ROTC thing, I don't want to have to do Airborned and jump out of a plane if I go Infantry! :cry
Really thinking about 19 Delta, but not sure.
So yea, getting ready for basic...going to be fuuuuuun :doh

Well, I had originally thought of that along time ago, but I'd have to go all the way out to Little Creek for the school and what not, and I honestly don't want to turn Tuba playing into work. Plus, I'm playing for a community band, and just got recruited for a brass band and also for a Dixie Land Jazz band as well

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
I was 11B
My basic was in Sep-Dec
Go in Aug, not Jan
Georgia gets friggin' cold in the winter
We had snow in Jump School in January
and...
Don't be a sissy
Earn your Beret son.
Go Airborne.

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Grats TC! I spent 4 years in the Navy back in the 90's and I'd still be in there if it wasn't for this damned metal knee they gave me.
It's a great honor to serve your country, I wish you the very best at it!

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Hey Brother,
I was 19D, Cavalry Scout, back in the mid 90s. I went to Ft. Knox for OSUT training in October, hot when we got their, freezing when we left.
I was stationed in Ft. Stewart, Georgia, 24th ID, 2nd Squadron, 4th US Cavalry (now 3rd ID I think).
If you go to Geroriga for any reason, stay away during the summer!
And you can't go wrong with being part of the Cavalry!

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Jumping from a plane isn't hard.
it's the landing
ba-da-bing
anyway...
Chose what best suits you
after all, you are the one stuck with your decision , not us.
and thank you for serving, I appreciate it.

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Auugh! Combat Arms MOSsssessses's...
When you leave IMHO is not so much dependent as where you go for BCT... I took my 19D basic at Ft. Benning, GA in August 1982; it sucked...
I took my 11B training at Ft. Dix, NJ during the summer; it sucked...
I took my 19K training in Boise, ID in March '99; weather was good but wayyyyy to **** windy, so, it sucked... :lol
Good luck on your enlistment tho, from a 12 year Veteran...

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Best of luck Chris. I did 4 years in the Marines best decision I ever made. I recommend if you don't plan on doing 20 years to pick a mos that will transfer to Civilian life. For example I did Crash Fire Rescue now I do Firefighting. Just my 2 cents.

I got turned down 3 times. despite having a 97 asvab Yet it's funny how I can make the police officer's POST entry test EVERY Time! Still huntin for a full time job that pays better than burger king.
Still if ya' can get in, Do it. My wife did any we had a nice average lifestyle while she was in.

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Thanks guys! I'm sorry to hear about you getting turned down Sgt. Skirata, sucks.. I know some people that want to get in too, but can't due to some really minor health conditions..One of my buddies got an appointment for the Naval Academy, but was turned down ONLY because of his vision (he wore glasses)
But I've decided to go to basic in the Fall, and I am going 19 Delta

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Ft. Knox in the fall isn't too bad, mean temperature probably 85* or thereabouts, dry, so you get red dust on you instead of red clay... :lol
If things haven't changed much, you'll be at Disney barracks, 1/81 Armor Training Brigade (used to be Troop A, 6th Cav squadron when I was there) not far from the wash racks...

lol Yea, I've been told knox isn't so bad...Especially since I'm not going to "Ft. 'lost in the woods'" for combat engineer :lol
Oh man, 85 degrees is nice wether.

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Well, I'm heading off to Alabama today, going to MEPs tomorrow morning! Going to get probed and whatnot I guess, but if all checks out, I'll be swearing in as well. My date to get shipped off to basic will be sept. 2nd.
The only thing I am slightly worried about is that because of my size, I have to do this thing called the "arms" test (don't know why it's called that) but basically is where there is about a 1' high step that I have to step up and down, to a metronome for 5 minutes without stopping. That will pretty much determine wether or not I'll get contracted. I practiced this last night, and did all 5 minutes fine, so I just hope nothing goes wrong lol

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Chris, just choose something that interests you but is not your full time job i.e. cop being an MP. Do something outside of your comfort zone that makes you grow as a person and dignifies your beliefs. Believe me when I say that the military changes your life. Even if you don't like it you will be a better man for having served.
That being said, don't be a sissy. Quit worrying and start kicking arse and taking names!!! OHAHHHH!!!!!

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Fort Jackson in the summer was...er....hot....:lol
I did the army band thing too for 8 years. Did my OJT at Jackson as well. If you go there, hope you get into "Hollywood" style barracks as opposed to "Tank Hill."
Good luck man!

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
jumping out of a plane only sounds scary at first, be more concerned about landing correctly

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Hey man, good luck, and remember a few key things during basic:
1. Always lend a helping hand to your buddies, and always be squared away doing what's RIGHT, not what's EASY. All it takes is one act to be labeled as a sh*t bag, and its downhill from there. Plus, you need to absorb as much valuable training as possible.
2. Keep up with PT. Any downtime (the very little bit) you get at the end of the training day can be used for a good 20 min. of pushups, running, or better yet, weights. My PT score went from a 278 to a 297 in 2 months just by lifting...helped out all my events.
3. Unless you're already married, DON'T DO IT until you're a few years into your service. I can't tell you how many of us have been divorced because the gal can't take the pressures of being an Army wife. Its a sad cold fact, but we've had 9 guys in my company since January get a divorce. If you're single, ENJOY IT. You'll be working too much and getting put on too many **** details to have to worry about a relationship.
4. HAVE FUN. Yea, you'll be in the suck for a good while, but the friends you make, the awesome training you receive, and the fact that you can look back and say "Wow, I'm doing what most Americans wouldn't dare do" will be worth it. I'd say basic and Airborne were the 2 highlights of my Army experience.
Good luck man, and keep us posted if you get a chance. I salute you for your service.

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Thanks guys! I really appreciate all of your comments!
Well, I got back from doing star wars weekends..as for MEPS, I qualified for everything, but I messed up by putting down a really minor thing from a hospital visit. They told me that I had to get them the records on that and told me to come back next week :/
So when I go back wednesday, I just need to wait for that to clear and then I will contract

Re: So....I'm enlisting the in the National Guard
Hey Chris... I thought you signed up with the guard a while ago. Any way good luck with it.
Oh yeah...... I don't think jumping out of a plane would be too scary. I'd love to do it! It's just the sudden stop at the bottom if the 'chute doesn't work you have to worry about.
