SLI & ATI CROSSFIRE Bridge

I know this isnt Fett related but i wanted to ask you guys if anyone knows anything about the diffrence between SLI & ATI,s Crossfife bridge .

I have a SLI enabled motherboard which came with my pc a year ago ,
i have 2 SLI nvidia GeForce 9600 GS and now plan to go with ATI .

Basically i wanted to know if anyone know if there is a size diffrence on the SLI bridge compared to the ATI,s Crossfire Bridge .

I have seen some pics on the ATI Crossfire bridge on the web but there not that brilliant to confer with :(
Anyone help me out here ?
Cheers guys.

you want to stick with what your motherboard chipset is. if your running an Intel, you are probably better off sticking with nvidia if your mobo is SLI already its a no-brainer to stay with nvidia SLI but if you are wanting to go with AMD, well it gets a little tricky. AMD and ATI joined forces not too long ago and most the AMD motherboards are ATI cross-fire ready and thats the way you want to go. there is a few nforce nvidia mobos out there if you wanted to go the SLI route. Basicly what I am saying is your motherboard chipset is going to make your mind up for you. - I run 2 Nvidia 8800 gt cards in SLI with a AMD nforce 590 mother board and I love it.

I can tell a small difference between the new Crossfire X and SLI. Been using and building comps with SLI since it became the gamer's standard back on the old 7800 cards, and right now I think the current incarnation of Crossfire X is beating SLI when you compare the stats and cost. It's much like the Intel/AMD war where Intel makes the biggest fastest beast...you still get more bang for the buck with AMD.

It really boils down to how much you want to pay. I just bought a new Alienware M70 laptop with dual 3870 XT cards, and compaired to the Nvidia alternative I feel like I came out on top. When you consider your spending upwards of $150-200 for at most a 30-40 fps increase...I don't think it's worth that extra money when you can put that into a beefier CPU or more RAM.

So what your saying is that you want to use ATI cards in CrossfireX on your SLI enabled MOBO?

Yes it's possible if you hack the drivers, but it's not advisable. If you get the hack wrong then you may end up with everything from a fried MOBO to fried GFX cards. You can plug the ATI card in and use it on the board, but you can't use Crossfire on it and expect it to work correctly if at all. They do make motherboards that can go both ways, so if you do replace your mobo then that would be a good way to ensure you can use both next time around.

Yes i want to use ATI cards in CrossfireX on my SLI enabled MOBO,
but what im saying is are these 2 bridges the same size on there brackets.
Basically i tried my SLI bridge on the ATI cards i have and it didnt fit !!
Hence why im asking :)

I've never done it before (never had to) but my answer is going to be a no. The pin-out is different for those cards, hence making them not compatable for interchanging of parts like that. You can get a crossfire birdge from Newegg.com for $10, but your in the UK so whoever sells comp parts in the UK should be able to sell you one fairly cheap.

I still want to make sure you understand that trying to make an SLI only board work in Crossfire is not the best idea...especially as cheap as you can get a mobo and do a repair install on windows.

Thx Novall, well ive been told my mobo should support both SLI & Crossfire ,i just wanted to make sure there was a size diffrence in the to bridges as shown above :)

My Nvidia SLI motherboard died on my last night ,so i stopped in to a friend of mine who own a pc shop, anyways he offered me a new SLI motherboard with the intel chipset.
After looking at the specs on the web on this new Motherboard it offered me the ATI Crossfire technology plus many other (y)
At last it seem the intel chipsets on the sli motherboards will support both ATI and Nvidia ,so anyone thinking of going from Nvidia to ATI or vice versa should upgrade to the intel !!
To be honest im not saddened by my Nvidia SLI mobo died since i was told it might support ATI in which it didnt ,im please now i can use the ATI Crossfire
