Scene in ANH

Scoutleader

Active Hunter
In ANH when the Falcon is being pulled in the docking by of the Death Star the are two, what appear to be,troopers standing near canons.Right after the line "We're openign the magnetic feild".
Their outfits seem to different from a regular stromtrooper outfits.I can not see to clearly, maybe it is because they are filmed at such a small scale.I have tried pausing to get a clear look but can not tell.
Are these two wearing a different style of trooper armor? They seem to have different helmets and backpacks on but in "trooper white" color.I have always thought they were a crew working outside of the docking bay in enviromental suits for space walking.
Just curious

I was wondering about that myself Mike. From the screen cap, it seems that the upper back pack looks somewhat like that of the biker scout tank (left trooper). I tried to crop it but it just distorts the pic up close due to low resolution. It seems that the lower piece of the pack is some kind of cylinder placed horizontally. The trooper on the right seems to have a different pack than the trooper on the left.

Actually, I think they've always been there. There is a whole big discussion over at the RPF about their jet packs.

Thank you for sharing that link. After almost two hours reading all 20 pages of that thread my question is answered. If anyone wants to build a Spacetrooper I strongly suggest reading that thread on how to build the backpack. The history of it is interesting as well.
TD2253:It is not a biker scout pack. From what I read it is a pack of its design and build not copied again in the films.

After reading through the RPF thread I concur that it is other than a biker scout tank. Thanks for that link Brianthesith!

Its not a biker scout tank and its always been in the film since 1977. Its a stormtrooper with a different breathing unit on their back. There was a discussion about it a while ago over on the 501st forums and on the RPF where they showed photos from the set with the packs on their backs.

There is a thread over on The RPF trying to piece together what they used for the original, one guy there has made an awesome replica, although no one really knows if its accurate or not (y)

They are "space troopers". Basically they have two white canisters that run vertical and have a hoze that comes out of them and runs into the helmet. I believe there are some little greeblies that are on the tanks as well, but I do not recall off the top of my head.

If I recall correctly, Joe Johnston played both the troopers in that shot. There was only one suit so they shot him twice.

Yeah in that thread I think someone found out that the above picture is very most likely to be 2 pictures over each other. Maybe it said something about Jack johnson being the only one in a book somewhere.
